The last time I dived was 2005! So excited that I'll get to dive again yeh... Kinda anxious... Will I rem how to dive, despite us taking our refresher course 2 weeks again? Will I puke during the boat ride? Arrived at Redang after more than 14 hrs coach + boat ride. After checking in & light lunch, underwater world... here we come! To our horror, we had to dive with almost 40 other ppl (cos it's the Singapore National Day weekend). Each boat took approx 20+ pax... somehow, the dive masters seem to be in a hurry. Gear up now! Quick, jump in now! Being a beginner, it felt kinda uneasy to have to fight for space to gear up. And we had to wait for 20+ ppl to get into the water, which made ... read more

You know, usually I like to go for a clever pun for these titles. But this time, I just decided to go straight for the jealousy button. And you already feel pretty jealous don't you? Don't lie, I know you are. As Lionel Ritchie once said, I can see it in your eyes. Hello. We made an early start from Kota Bharu, and as such were relaxing on Coral Bay on Pulau Perhentian Kecil by 11am. I'd rented out some snorkelling gear, and went for a bit of an explore into the water, to see some of the most bizarre rainbow coloured fish I've ever seen. There was also one cheeky chappy that challenged me to a duel, by repeatedly swimming right into my face, then backing off. We faced off for half an hour or ... read more

Our next stop was the Perhentian Islands which are raved about from everyone you speak to who has visited them. We left Ko Tao with a plan on how we were going to get there ensuring we avoided the trouble area in South Eastern Thailand where shooting & bombings have occured as recently as April. We got off the bus at the train station and our trip through hell began... Our first problem was that the Thais thought it would be a good idea to employ a ticket seller who spoke no English at all in one of the main tourist stations at Chumphon. This may sound really ignorant of us but it's rare to find a tourist who can speak more Thai than the real basics so it's very unlikely that anyone will be able ... read more

El sábado también empieza bien temprano. Esta vez sin embargo, tenemos a Mr Lee susurrándonos a través de la puerta. "Are you readyyy?".

Since our last blog entry we flew back into Malaysia and spent a few days in Kuala Lumpur before then taking a 7 hour bus journey to Kuala Terengganu. We stayed one night in Terengganu (having the most amazing food in a local ’kitchen area’ which cost hardly anything!) before hopping over to the stunningly beautiful island paradise of Pulau Kapas which is just off the east coast of Malaysia. After much reading and deciding I (Andy) came to the conclusion that I would like to spend my birthday on Pulau Kapas which is an unknown to both of us and also seems like the perfect place to relax and spend a week over my birthday. After getting up early and leaving the hotel in Terengganu we got to the Jetty in Marang and hopped onto ... read more

I'll start by putting this trip and its experiences into context... I've completed almost 800 dives in 50+ dive locations around the world and one of the dives we did on this trip ranked up there in the top 10! As Ali says in his blog Awesome, Awesome, Awesome! This is the second of our forays into East coast Penninsula Malaysia diving. The first was Pulau Tioman a larger island with the mass tourism that makes things comfortable yet a bit inefficient. The diving was 'Ok lah' but nothing special... maybe we were a bit unlucky with the weather we thought but the general experience was a fun time. Some of us drove to Mersing over night some took the bus. The drive took 4 hours, the bus 5hrs. The ferry then took over 2 hours ... read more

Whale Sharks! - Nature's Biggest Fish In 7 years of diving, I've missed more whale shark sightings than the average diver - with something like 700 dives completed, I've never seen one. I'd stopped believing. Each season on the Perhentians I'd miss the whale shark, either being on a visa run, taking a morning off, or the boat would be broken - I missed seeing these beautiful creatures time and time again. Until now. Now I believe! We'd been told that a couple of friendly whale sharks had been seen regularly at one of the dive sites off Tenggol, so we dropped in, and waited - patience is a virtue and in two out of the three dives we tried at this point - the whale sharks turned up. Saturday - 16:30 - first attempt - ... read more

So we got to the smaller of the two Perhentians and unloaded into our little hut - only power coming from a generator switched on from 10am til 1pm, and 7pm til 7am. Not to worry, all our time was spent chilling on the porch or on the beach or snorkeling. We went for a trip around both of the islands for one of the days we were there, and swam with sharks, giant sea turtles and sting rays. Really hot weather and some of the friendliest hosts we have met yet ! These guys live the most chilled place in the world I think and it shows... No alcohol was readily available on the islands unless you went looking for it so it served as a bit of a detox for us too (well there ... read more

Well I booked a flight to Kuala Terengganu for 7:05am Tuesday morning, so I got up at 2am to get taxi to KL Sentral and then the Skybus from there to the low cost carrier terminal. I booked my return flight for 9:20 pm the same day. Many websites told me that there were return boats from Merang jetty to Redang island ALL DAY. I now still feel like suing these websites for false advertising lol. The nightmare began at around 5am with this disgusting chicken porridge from KFC - rice with chicken floss in it topped with FISH! FOR BREAKFAST!! YUK! Got plane to Terengganu and already had a bad feeling at the airport. Everyone on the flight flocked to people holding up signs with their names on. Obviously there was no sign for me. ... read more
