We arrived on Perhentian Island in Malaysia in on June 17th . I was here about 6 years ago, and Scott three, and it's still an unspoilt paradise I am glad to say. Have been doing a lot of snorkelling, which has been great. Great, that was, until we saw a shark today! We had walked over to a deserted beach and I had seen it in the shallows, soon after entering the water. I then saw it again in the distance, just a scary outline. Finally, we saw it very close, about 15 feet away!!! That was enough for us - we were out of there quite quickly and now feel scared to go back in, eve though everyone assures us they are completely harmless. June 30th I just spent last night in the "accident ... read more

We spent the last week in the Perhentian Islands in the South China Sea off the coast of Malaysia. It was amazing - crystal clear turquoise water, palm trees, powder white sand. I'll summarize how I spent my days there: sit on beach, jump in water, repeat; beach volleyball until dark, jump in water. We also went snorkelling a couple times, we saw a giant sea turtle (I was swimming right next to it), four sharks, lots of jellyfish, colorful fish, and coral. We met loads of really cool people, both locals and other travellors...it was hard to say goodbye to everyone we've met! We had a goodbye party last night with the people we met and learnt a bunch of new drinking games I'll bring back with me (yee-haw! and sorry mom). Right now we're ... read more

Heading north from Singapore we stopped over for a night in Melacca, where it hammered down with rain, but that didn't bother us too much as we had happened upon the “Traveller's Lodge”, a plush guest house with full air-con, wet room and 3 beds all for just a tenner. The three of us were definitely hoping that this was a sign of things to come! In Mellaca we headed out for a great comedy meal at a place called Capital Satay. Basically, in the centre of your table is a burner and a big pot of Satay Sauce, and towards the back of the restaurant there is a fridge containing a massive variety of slightly indistinct foods on wooden sticks which you take and cook in the Satay Sauce in front of you. Not really ... read more

At the moment we are in Kota Bahru at the top of the eastern side of Malaysia. Tomorrow we cross the border into Thailand but at this stage am unsure as to whether we stay in the region for a few days or just keep heading north to Bangkok. We can’t get any information on the train timetables until we actually arrive in Thailand. We’ve booked a taxi to drive us the one hour north and drop us off at the border immigration office, where we then have to walk the kilometre between the two border posts and onward to the train station. We loved our time in Kuala Terengganu - the city had a strong Islamic influence and we seemed to be the only tourists there. We spent 2 days and nights there - we ... read more

I’m writing this in a little café in Jerentut in Central Malaysia, whilst waiting for a bus to take us to Kuantan on the east coast of the country. We arrived in Jerentut after five hours on the Jungle Railway from KL. We travelled 2nd class - it was clean, comfortable and a/c. The train was very busy as it is now school holidays here. Jerentut is a quiet little village, though we discovered the main part of the town (much bigger) when we climbed up the hill behind us. We are actually in the old part - the newer part is higher and set amongst trees so hard to see from here. We spent the night in a small hotel, paying only $16 for the room. After wandering around the village we located a laundry ... read more

Malaysia is an unheralded destination on the South East Asian backpackers trail, and definitely fits the description Truly Asia! I flew in from Sydney to land in Kuala Lumpur on the Peninsula Malaysia, kicking off a backpacker trip in the most populous part of the country. Only five million Malaysians out of the total population of twenty four million live in Borneo on the other side of the South China Sea. Kuala Lumpur is the very modern capital of this regional economic powerhouse, and I spent an enjoyable few days exploring the city, which included a brush with a conman straight out of the KL warning section in the Lonely Planet. This smooth talking, but very dodgy looking character started spinning me a line about having a daughter who lives in Sydney, and insisting I meet ... read more
