From Bali to Perhentian Besar, welcome to our last discovery trip we did the last 3 days. We first made a short stop in Saigon to drop Leslie. Ma'ri and I are now together for few days enjoying some romantic times together. Perhentians Islands are another dive spot in Asia. This time we are hitting Malaysia. And it's finally the 20th country in which I'm diving. Will make sure I jump to 30 countries soon or later! Perhentians are actually two main islands, Kecil and Besar or also know as the Small Island and the Big Island ( very original!!). We are staying on the Big Island. No roads, no cars, not even bicycles around. Only boat to ferry you around, to go to dive or to other beaches. The sand is amazingly soft and white. ... read more

First day traveling together! For our last day in Singapore we decided to hit up the zoo. We saw a bunch of monkeys hanging around the trail, and got to see a sea lion show! The elephants kinda sucked, but it was a great day, especially because the monkeys and deer-mice were literally on the trails with us. We saw lots of giant spider webs (more pics to come in a later update). Afterwards, we had an awkward moment at the hostel watching "Waiting" with some random people. A movie with surprise crotch-shots is probably not the best first movie to watch with strangers... Malaysian Railways Station in Singapore is technically Malaysian property, and it shows. It's a lot shabbier than the cleanliness of Singapore that you take for granted. We had a very interesting ride ... read more

We left the Cameron Highlands on Friday morning and caught a bus with 4 other backpackers heading to the Northeast coast, to the Perhentian Islands. There are two islands, Perhentian Besar (big island) and Perhentian Kecil (small island). Most backpackers opt for the smaller island because the accommodation is cheaper and the island is less developed. The journey took around 6 hours, stopping about halfway for lunch and then switching buses. The second half of trip was by far less comfortable, with at least twelve of us crammed into a mini-van bus all with our big backpacks. We met some wonderful Brits traveling up from Taman Negara National Park (where we headed to after the island). The drive was absolutely nuts, overtaking cars on a two lane road and swerving around small motorcycles. We made it ... read more

We had arrived! Back to paradise! It had been a year since we were last here and we could already see the change in the island. It had got a lot busier and there was quite a bit of development going on. We managed to get a room at the same place we stayed at last year, Mohsin Chalets which gives excellent views over the sea although it was being run by new management and had lost its party vibe quite a bit. We weren't yet acclimatised so had some real trouble when the electricity went off at 8am. As soon as the fan stopped I couldn't stay in bed a minute longer, it was just soooo hot! We had a great couple of weeks chilling out on the beach, not doing very much at all. ... read more

Selamat pagi (Good morning)! I’ll start by saying that I have added pics to the last entry so it should be a little more interesting now… I left off as we were about to embark on the last part of the field portion of the course, Pulau Redang. An hour boat ride across azure seas took us to what can only be described as paradise. Paradise might even be cutting it short. We pulled up to a diminutive sandy beach skirted on one side by coral reef and on the other by dense jungle. The beach was covered in short sticks coming out of the sand (more on that later) and there was a small hut for cooking, lectures, and where the couple of employees stay. It is called Pasir Mak Kepit, which roughly translates to ... read more

9th - 12th June I went to Perhentian Island. Actually it was unplanned journey with friends. We drove a car from Kuala Lumpur towards Besut, Terengganu at 11pm. Arrived at Kuala Besut jetty to depart to Perhentian Island at 7 a.m on 10th June. Then we take a speed boat to Long Beach, which cost us rm35/way/person. After reaching there, it was very difficult to find the chalet/room to stay because lots of operators didn't like the local tourist since they stay there too short as compared to the foreigners who easily can stay there almost a week. However, we were so lucky, and able to have one room accommodating 3 peoples which cost us MYR105 with additional bed plus air-cond and 24hrs electricity. On the 2nd day, we went snorkeling to 4 points such coral ... read more

From Borneo, we flew back through KL, and worked our way up to the Perhentian Islands. There are 2 of them and we stayed at Kecil, the smaller of the two. The beach here is the best I have seen so far in SE Asia. The sand is amazing, white and soft. The water is amazing, azule blue and clear. No garbage in the water. So needless to say, we did very little here but take a vacation from our vacation. Did a little diving, did a little snorkeling. Traveling can be exhausting, so it was nice to just sit on the beach for 9 days. I know, rough life;) The accomodations on the island, surprisingly, are very crappy. There are multiple locations with bungalows, but I overheard many peoples stories of unwanted varmin in their ... read more

We’ve been doing a lot of scuba diving and snorkeling in Pulau Perentians between the two islands of Kecil and Besar, and while the diving is good, it’s the snorkeling that is amazing. We went out today with this guy named Adam. Last name: Drives a White Boat with a Black Canopy. You just ask the folks at Impiani to give him a call, and he’ll come pick you up in his boat. (Cost: 38 R* per person for about three hours.) And he is awesome. Now, this is a jump in and swim experience. No life jackets, no pre-packed snackies, no little tutorial on here is the snorkel and there is the fishy. Adam just jumps in with his clothes, grabs his fins with a bite out of one (you don’t get any fins), and ... read more

At last i manage myself to be an official divers. It suddenly pop - up in my mind to get a valid diving license and make a quick decision ever, it happen after I come back from Thailand. From snorkling suddenly I decide to explore more about underwater creature. Get support from good friend who also know someone working in Perhentian to help me on this. From cheapest rooms, and not very expensive dive course. Its unbelievable that I already pass that exam within 2 night. Score it with flying colour, without any doubt. So now i start to plan where and when will be my next dive trip. Photos has been capture by using just a normal film ( 35mm ) camera. Look a bit blurry. But its doesn't matter as long I can explore ... read more

Island Life Saturday morning it was crazy raining. Our goal was to head to the ATM (to test that our Capital One card worked, but it did not) and to arrange a taxi to Kuala Besut. These two errands had us run only a few blocks from our hotel, but we ended up soaking wet. By the time we entered the taxi, our pants were soaked. Luckily, we were wearing our quick dry pants and they dried before we arrived in Kuala Besut, about an hour later. We arrived at the jetty in Kuala Besut, the jumping off point for the Perhentian Islands. It was madness at the jetty, and I was unsure if it was a normal Saturday, or because it was the start of a school holiday based on Jack Wee’s warning. We ... read more
