Up for banana and honey pancakes for breakfast on the beach with Katerine and Rasmus before heading to Temple of the Sea with Mee, our divemaster. The dive was very nice, full of bamboo sharks, hawksbill turtle and blue spotted stingrays. Apparently the diving at Temple had been out of this world for the previous 2 days so, inevitably, there were too many divers out there and, whilst it was obviously a good dive to do with plenty to see, it wasn't the extraordinary one that others had been lucky to have experienced in the days before. Nevermind, you can't command nature to be there for you. So back ashore for and hour and a half, finding out that it was one of the divemasters 30th birthday that day and he was having a superhero party ... read more

So once again we were up early. This was made extra difficult because both of us had only had a small amount of sleep. And for once I wasn't the only grumpy one in the morning - even Daniel had acquired that trait for a morning. We had the usual for breakfast (surprise, surprise) and then headed for the monorail to take us to KL Sentral and from there we were getting the shuttlebus to the airport. This was an easy and quick journey and we were through check in quickly, through security and waiting for the flight, playing once again on the free WiFi.. The flight wasn't overly exciting*. AirAsia were good as usual and even the hoards of loud, shouty, bag laden tourists got settled fairly fast. I was sat next to a woman who ... read more

I woke up at 7:30 in the morning because the sun was streaming into our room and I just can’t sleep if the sun’s presence is obvious. I got some writing done and stared at a lizard on my wall for awhile while Joel slept (not a huge fan of the lizards, that one). We knew that we wanted to go snorkeling and that the trip left at 11, so we headed down to the beach at 10, bought our tickets and ate breakfast at one of the small restaurants on the beach. I ordered a blend of strawberries and bananas and they brought this overflowing glass. It was WAY too much food. We left at 11 with an older French couple and our boat driver, Yo. First we headed to fish Point, which was an ... read more

We woke up at 6:30 for our ferry at 7 in the morning. Luckily the town is small, so we arrived in plenty of time and then were walked a block over to the jetty. We were asked which of the two Perhentian islands we wanted to go to (Kecil- the more “backpacker” of the two) and which beach on the island (Long Beach – supposedly more fun/ more places to stay). Then we were sorted into speed boats for a 30-minute ride out to the island. About halfway through I was pretty sure I was going to learn to drive a speedboat and just ferry people back and forth everyday for the rest of my life. There were 3 women on our boat from an unidentified European country and they didn’t seem thrilled with ... read more

I'm so behind right now i really need to pull my finger out. We are currently in Bangkok for the 3rd day and have just booked our 12 hour over night train ticket upto Chang Mai. Since my last update though we have already been to the Teman Negara National Park and had a quick overnight pit stop back in KL to catch a 2 day train journey up through Thailand. I will try my best to try to get caught up on blogs but they do take me forever to finish so bear with me. Hmmm (I'm thinking whilst scratching my head here!). I'm unsure of where to even begin with this blog about our time spent in the Perhentian's. I'm getting kind of bored listing activities by day and it's probably becoming a bit ... read more

Another night bus, another driver with little or no sense of safety for his passengers as he winds recklessly (often on the wrong side of the road) through the mountains, another early drop off and a night spent being eaten alive in a travel agent’s office in the middle of nowhere, a further boat ride... then we had arrived at Pulau Perhentian Kecil; the small Perhentian Island. And I can say with certainty that it was worth the effort (and cost of £30 per passenger, a weighty expenditure on a traveller’s budget) to get here. Blue sky, white sand, lush green jungle and the clearest water we have ever seen. The Perhentian Islands are located on the north eastern coast of Malaysia; there is the big island (?) with its resorts, and then the small island ... read more

After a quick overnight stay at a hotel close to Kuala Lumpur International Airport, we caught a short flight to Kota Bharu at the top of Peninsula Malaysia's east coast. From there it was a one hour taxi drive a 45 minute speedboat ride to reach the Perhentian Islands. All the way from the airport to the speedboat jetty, the rain kept falling and the skies were a very depressing shade of grey. It hit home at that point that we'd just about had enough of the wet weather. July is peak season for the Islands, and it would be terrible luck if we weren't bathed in sunshine everyday. Fortunately, as we moved further and further offshore the clouds disappeared and the sun started shining down. This was more like it... The Perhentian Islands lie approximately ... read more

The journey to the Perhentian islands was not the longest or hardest we'd endured so far but still pretty epic even by our Asian trip standards. It started with a 4am cab ride to one of KL's airports and a McDonalds breakfast to prepare us for the day. It was raining when we left so weren't too sad to be leaving KL and the 2 hour flight onboard one of those scary propellor planes again to Kota Bharu on the east coast was painless. Once down we took a deep breathe and prepared for the enevitable ripping off that comes with most taxi booking in Asia. With the barganing out the way we had the pleasure of travelling with a driver who was either falling asleep at the wheel or sounding like he was suffering an ... read more

I have found a little paradise called the Perhentian Islands in northeastern Malaysia. There are two main islands here called Besar(large) and Kecil(small) which I have spent the last 6 days on. They both have plenty of stunning beaches, snorkelling and diving spots, and decent accommodation. I am on the smaller island which attracts mainly young foreign backpackers whilst the larger island has more local tourists as well as more up market places to stay at. It was quite easy to get to, on wednesday I took a two and a half hour local bus from Kuala Terengganu and then a 40 minute speedboat ride to the island. I found it a little bit hard to get cheap accommodation so ended up staying the first night in a bungalow with shared bathroom and limited hours of ... read more

Taking a short trip on a public bus I arrived in the states capital Terengganu, a small city that I found had lots do and see and not many tourists. After finding a clean but very basic room above a travel agents I headed off for a look around. I had my hair cut, visited the night market where I chose random foods to try even after eating them I won't sure what they all were other than deep fried, visited central market and learnt that fridays most things were closed as it is a religious day, and Terengganu has a high population of muslims. Although I did manage to walk up the biggest 'hill' that took a minute to walk up, but had been used during the war for vision on coming enemies and still ... read more
