Cameron Highlands Resort I am staying here for another few days. The room deco is fantastic, the air is refreshing, the services are excellent and the traffic is beyond words. The room is cost USD250.00 per night. Rather expensive for local tourists but for foreigners, it maybe reasonable considering the forex and quality of services by the resort.... read more

Im writing this having just had Tea and Scones in a little tea shop........BIZARRE!!!! We left the Perhentian Islands on what was suppose to be another speedboat...... we were gutted at how slow this boat was as we had paid for a speed boat and had enjoyed the trip to the island so much. We boarded the Minibus which was pretty cool as there was only 3 of us making the trip.....we both had our legs stretched up and relaxed for the next 6 hours or so of winding roads. We noticed how cold we were getting in the van after a while and asked to turn the aircon off........ and when we arrived Bex started shivering as she gets cold easily, reminding me every so often from the comforts of her pink fleece. Our hotel ... read more

Han - Hello! Hope everyone's well, just trying to remember what comes next, O.K, Outdoorsy stuff. Now, you may not want to read this if you're alone or it's late & stormy outside, it's scary shit. It all started when we arrived in the sleepy town of Tanah Rata, a place famed for its fresh local strawberries and, well, just strawberries actually. Our friends chose to stay in 1940s WW2 bunkers with original beds. We booked into a cute little room with attached shower, comfy bed & 1950's decor. The shower was only usable if you lay on the floor (nice mental picture for you there) and had it as cold as possible. It is cold in the Cameron Highlands. Beer was quite expensive & evenings were spent watching movies & playing pool. Whilst we were ... read more

My last day in Tanah Rata, gonna be a shame to leave this beautifal spot but moving on to bigger and better things. Local transport runs pretty frequent so I decided on a trip out to the time tunnels a museum recently set up to depict the history of the Highlands. Filled to the brim with photos and memorabilia of the local towns and an insight into how the tourist trade called for massive development from the 50's onwards. A fitting tribute to Jim Thompson the starter of the silk trade from Thailand whom became lost, never to be found while hiking in the Highlands. Next I went next door to one of the many Strawberry farms in the area. Got the chance to do some picking and tasting- not quite British Strawberries but damn tasty ... read more

The resident guide Bob had us up around 6ish to do the early morning hike. On came the boots, the long carggys, the big old socks all which have been collecting dust in the bottom of me bag and off into the hills. From the word go I could tell this was gonna be fun, as the mist was still hanging around the hills and due was coating the bushes and trees. Bob being a local nature guide indulged us all in the flora native and unique to this region of the highlands, with comedy and gesture. The first climb was to a sumit of around 1650m by which time the mist had cleared and you could see for miles around the towns scattered about and the mountains covered with thick vegetation. A quick break preceded ... read more

The day began so promising before I reached the bus terminal and it all went horribly wrong. I arrived at 11:00 missing the direct bus by 15mins so I thought I have a plan go to Ipoh and ge a bus from there cause thats close. THe bus was about to leave success, or spo I thought. I arrived to find out that the next bus to Tanah Rata was until 5:30 thats 4 hours away. So started my lost day at the bus terminal- Now I know how Tom Hanks felt as it was porring with rain and I thought sod this my bags are heavy and the chocolate waffles are rather filling. 5 later still not satisfied I eat a dodgy chicken burger and fell asleep. Woke up with 5 to spare and finally ... read more

The bus journey. Yes I know I go on about them, but when you don’t have the pleasure, and believe me it is a real pleasure of having your own transport there’s a good chance you’ll be traveling by bus, coach or minibus or a combination of all three in order to reach your chosen destination. After a while you too would learn to loath buses. Apart from being driven by someone who clearly shouldn’t be given a driving license soley as a potential danger to others health, the constant delays and unscheduled stops (I kid you not. We stopped this one time at what was presumably the drivers home so he could collect in the washing hung out on the line) really add to the experience of never getting where you want to go fast ... read more

Asia » Malaysia » Cameron Highlands » Tanah Rata By SarahP July 18th 2007 Good day to you all back in that green and pleasant land we call England (most of you!) - you'll never guess what we had a couple of days ago (well you might from the title) - a blimming cream tea!! With real milk as well which I can tell you is a rare sight in this part of the world - the locals drink sweet condensed milk with their tea. I'm trying to sound colonial but it's not working - jolly good! Hm....! After our last post I did actually manage to hobble round the old lonely planet "walking tour" of Georgetown, we saw some grand buildings and Fort Cornwallis, which is where the English first landed on Penang Island. ... read more

Hello again - this time we are doing two blogs at once - one for the Cameron Highlands, and the second for the Perhentian Islands. We havn't updated for a while and this way we can keep the pictures seperate. Sorry for the delay, we actually wrote these blogs a few days ago but have had difficulties getting the pictures online. Anyway here they are... So after we left Penang we were hoping to get a bus across the country to Kuala Besut where we could then catch the boat to the Perhentian Islands. We arrived at the bus station about 1pm and the bus didnt leave until 9pm so we got the old book out and decided we would stop off in the Cameron Highlands first. This turned out to be a good choice ... read more

The journey to the Cameron Highlands started by purchasing a ticket off a dude outside the bus terminal who directed us to a bus not actually parked inside the terminal, but parked about 200 metres down a main road, assuring us that it would wait for us to board before it left. As a rule of thumb I trust noone in South East Asia, which I feel is a good attitude to have, but luckily the bus did wait, and we had actually purchased genuine tickets. The journey took around 4 hours and for all of us, it was a relief to get away from city life, having done Auckland, Singapore, Malacca and KL all on the trot. Coming out of KL along the motorway I thought I had seen a ghost standing in the middle ... read more
