Getting out of the jungle was nearly as difficult as getting into it and we spent the best part of a day (and more money than we would have liked!) but, eventually arrived in Tanah Rata in the heart of the Cameron Highlands. Tanah Rata is a small town situated on a long road of villages, markets and farms and has some gorgeous views of the surrounding hills and countryside. The Cameron Highlands is Malaysia's premier hill station destination and their premier tea producing region. In the days of British colonisation the English, missing their tea, decided to bring over a load of experienced tea growers and pickers from India and to recreate what was so effectively done in Darjeeling. Thus the Cameron Highlands were born. Now, the Highlands are a major tourist attraction thanks to ... read more

Hi It's all going well here in the Cameron Highlands of Malaysia. We left Singapore and headed up to KL for a few days. KL was good, a bit rougher around the edges than Singapore and even hotter and more humid. We had a look up the KL tower, the 4th highest in the world which gave a great view of the city. At night we headed up the Petronas Towers (the second highest building in the world). It was good round there at night, all the parks were lit up and there was a nice atmosphere. The next day will not go down as one of Helen's best. Let's just say she wasn't feeling too great with not much left in her tummy by the end of the day! We travelled up to the Cameron ... read more

Hi everyone!!! :) and HAPPY PADDYS DAY to ye fellow Irish buggers. Sorry we haven't updated in a few days but we've been manic and couldn't find decent enough net access. After Melaka we went up to the Cameron Highlands. We were supposed to arrive there about 5 hours later but TWELVE hours later after a bus trip full of animals coughing everywhere and spitting food etc we got there. I was BURSTING for a pee and we finally stopped for a break after 6 hours. Went in the toilet and it was sooo gross. It was a squat toilet with no lock. So there I was squatting, trying to keep my trousers off the soaking wet floor and holding the door closed with my HEAD. The air was BLUE. Haha. Nick ofcourse found this all ... read more

Day 10-March 15th: It rained through the night and was nice and cool and pleasant for sleeping. I got up early (8 AM) for my half-day tour of the area. We started at 8:45 AM and me and a Dutch couple were taken to a butterfly farm. This is code for butterfly zoo. The butterflies are caught in the hillside and brought in by a guy who unloads them from a box and releases them into the canopy-covered flower garden. Ugh! But I have to say, the butterflies were quite beautiful! There was also a flower garden, separate from the butterfly farm. And there was an insect/creature exhibit area too. More critters caught in the wild and put into small cages. Again, they were cool - and some quite creepy! - but it was a bit ... read more

Cameron Highlands 15th & 16th March 2008 We wanted to catch the early bus to the cameron highlands so up early. Said our fairwells to Steph. Steph was meeting a friend in thailand, otherwise she would have loved to come along with us. However there is a chance we may meet in a few weeks when I too am in thailand. Anyway, Lorna and I got the mono-rail into the city then had a 10-15 minute walk to the bus station. This wasn't a pleasant experience in the humidity and heat of KL - i soon looked like a drown rat ready to have yet another heart attack. Eventually we arrived at the station and we were advised to walk back down the street about 200mtrs to where the meeting point was. We didn't have a ... read more

Arrived in the Highlands late Tuesday night after a 4 hour bus ride from KL. The trip was really nice because I got to see a lot of the country. The landscape reminds me a lot of Costa Rica; I guess because the climates are similar. When I arrived at my hostel, I met an English girl. We went on a tour around the highlands together. We were lucky on our tour because we were the only two, so we got extra service from our guide who was really knowledgeable and friendly. Our first stop was the Rose Garden. A really huge garden with all kinds of tropical plants, flowers, cacti and of course, roses. We also went to a tea plantation and factory, a butterfly farm that included all kinds of gross scary insects as ... read more

Malaysia hadn't been in my plans at all, but with it being 9 degrees and raining in Hanoi, and 0 degrees in the area that I'd planned to go trekking in the north of Vietnam, it quickly became a part of them after I went into the Air Asia office to find out where I could fly to from Hanoi. It meant I can head up overland through Thailand to catch my next flight in a month's time to India. I liked Kuala Lumpur, although I only spent a couple of days there, due to the budget accomodation not being that great, or that budget either. I stayed in the Chinatown area which had a lively market and street food stalls, had a good scoff in the food court of the Petronas Towers (didn't go up, ... read more

I travelled to Saigon (also known as Ho Chi Minh City) from Pnom Penh to meet up with Kiran who had come all the way from sunny Glasgow to join me on my travels for a couple of weeks. As he only had a bit less than two weeks to travel from Saigon to Hanoi, we were on a schedule (something I'm not used to anymore!) So day 1 was spent exploring Saigon, where we went to the market and the War Remnants museum, which displays some very disturbing evidence of the war with America. The next day we went on a tour to the Cu Chi tunnels, an amazing network of underground tunnels which thousands of people lived in during the war. In the evening, we go the bus to Dalat in the central highlands, ... read more

Ok, the Cameron Highlands were quite an experience. The journey there was probably the most exciting part as the bus driver was quite sleepy.... that's to say the least. He was actually falling asleep on the wheel! Crazy. We sat in the front and I had my eyes clawed onto his face and he must have had his eyes closed for about 20 seconds per minute! Not kidding. It was scary. And if you've been on a bus to the Highlands before, you'd knw that this was scary shit. The road was so narrow that one wrong turn could have been fatal... But as things seem to go by a different time here, people seem to be lucky all day... we made it to Tanah Rata alive and in one piece. Admittedly, the food we found ... read more

February 2-5: Well it took a while and was a bit rough and nauseating, but we finally got high. The plantations up here are great, you can get a lot of really fresh and ripe goods. Actually, we're only up at about 3,000 feet, but that's the highest we've been in this country so far. The road up to Tanah Rata was a windy, narrow road up the side of a valley. Every corner was a blind corner and it was amazing we didn't crash into one of the many trucks and buses coming the other way. We were in the very front seats of the bus so we had the best view of what was going on and what all the honking was about. On the way back down, we're definitely taking motion sickness pills! ... read more
