Tea and scones Asia » Malaysia » Cameron Highlands » Tanah Rata By Trudy HarnJuly 6th 2007 The Cameron Highlands were fab. I found the normal people. In fact I met a whole bunch of really nice travellers at Father's Guest house. It was a bit like summer camp (not that I've ever been to summer camp but that's what a Canadian said and it sounded about right to me). Beautiful mountains, hillsides covered with tea plants. Weather like a good British summer's day and we really did have tea and scones. We might as well have been at Betty's. Did some trekking. Even ventured out with 2 lasses on some jungle paths (on which appa... read more

Trousers. And socks. Did I still have them in my backpack? I certainly couldn't recall having seen them in several months. Fortunately I did because here in the Cameron Highlands you sure as hell need them. Quite simply it is Scotland both in terms of scenary and temperature. What a refreshing change it made from 4 months of ultra hot weather. Botanists would have been in their element as the highlight of a trip to the Camerons is walking in the mossy forests and exploring the thousands of varieties of plant that aren't found elsewhere in Malaysia. It's still interesting even if you're not green fingered! Fathers Place guesthouse was where I stayed and what a great place it was too. A comfortable sitting area with dvd's on a big screen, free interent and a ... read more

Made it to Tanah Rata, which is a beatiful town in central Malaysia. It's fresh air, cooler climate and a nice backpaking haven. I'll make sure to get some good pictures for all of you. Thanks for all the messages and comments. It's nice to know that the world's a lot smaller with this technology. I'll probably stay here a week or so and I'll make sure to get some great pictures for you. I'll write soon.... read more

Well this is it - almost a year on, I'm finally writing a blog from Blighty! It's been an amazing trip but to be honest, my feet haven't really touched the ground since arriving back home. I've spent the time since, visiting friends and relatives (still more to go!) and have just got back from a cool camping trip in Dorset with friends from Hampshire. So it doesn't really feel like I've returned to any sort of normality yet - we've even fitted in a weekend trip to Ireland visiting Danielle's family, and we're soon to return in a couple of days! So in the time since my last entry, way back when we arrived into Australia by boat, we've helicoptered and dived the Great Barrier Reef, been to a footie game in Sydney, travelled the ... read more

This might be my favourite place thus far. I'm only upset by the fact that all I have are my Crocs as they are insufficient for hiking through the numerous trails available. Some of which are supposed to lead to beautiful waterfalls and hot springs. Some girl I met in Singapore said that if I decided to go to Cameron Highlands to stay at Father's Guesthouse. Her recommendation was excellent. This place is so homey. The dorms are made of the semicircle greenhouses buildings that are easy to set up. The hosts are super nice and accommodating. The views are amazing. Unfortunately, it is the beginning of a holiday for Malaysia (summer for school perhaps) so there is an abnormal amount of commotion in the little town. Still, it's NOTHING compared to hectic streets of KL. ... read more

Hello all, Well we got to KL Monday afternoon and were dropped off right in the middle of the city. After working our way past all the touts ( it was like moses and the parting of the red sea ) we went straight to Chinatown to find digs. Due to the lazy gene in us both we settled for the first backpackers we got to. The bathroom and toilets were communal and pretty bad but the room was clean enough and had aircon. They also had a couple of chill out zones with 100+ copied DVD movies and cheapish beer. First stop, the Menara tower. This is the best place in KL to get a 360 degree view of the city from hundreds of metres up. After doing that and taking the rush hour ... read more

The bus finally left hot, humid and sticky Kuala Lumpur and began its way to the Cameron Highlands. The change in scenery was starkly apparent as we left the city. To make our way to Tanah Rata (I suppose you would describe it as the main town of the Highlands) the bus had to drive up some incredibly windy roads. What first strikes you as you step off the bus is the change in temperature. Because the Highlands are located at around 1500 metres above sea level it has a much cooler climate. It was certainly a welcome change from KL! Signed up for a couple of great tours while up in the Cameron Highlands. The first of these was the "Country Tour" - which included visits to a rose garden, a bee garden, local ... read more

Hello all, So since I last wrote, Tamara and I left Phi Phi Island and headed to Krabi on the mainland. We went with a friend of ours called Lee. Krabi town isn't the most exciting place in the world so we only stayed a coupe of days... In order to make it a little more interesting, we decided to rent a Jeep and check out the countryside around Krabi.... It was all exquisitely lush and green. We spent the day just driving without purpose and ended up seeing some things that one doesn’t see simply by sightseeing... We left Lee, Krabi and Thailand to head to Malaysia. We took three busses to get to Georgetown Penang. We decided to spend the night here as we didn’t want to take yet another bus without a ... read more

So, it has been about a week since the last time I was able to sit down and write one of these things. My plan was to go to Kuala Lumpur(KL), see the city for a night or so, then catch a flight up to southern Thailand. As it usually happens when traveling, the plan got thrown out the window. Erin and I hopped a 7 hour train from Singapore up to KL on Sunday, which was a great way to get a real feel for the countryside, and see how typical rural malaysian towns operate. I was surprised to see the stark contrast between lush jungle and palm plantation nearly the entire way. The jungles of malaysia are being torn down at a rapid pace and being clear-cutted to make way for palm plantations. ... read more
