Hello, The first part of the journey leaving Penang for the Cameron Highlands, we had to walk to the free ferry to get across to Butterworth, where are coach would be waiting for us at 10.30am. The guy who we bought the tickets from said, the pier was only 10 minutes walk from our hotel. However, we finally reached it after 25 minutes of walking, Rob with 16kg on his back and both sweating like mad. We got the ferry after trying to get on with the cars, before being re-directed upstairs where passengers got on. Oops! We sat waiting for our coach which, was apperently stuck in traffic. 30 minutes later we got on and headed for the highlands. The bus journey took 7 and a half hours in stead of the 4 hours we ... read more

From Hat Yai we made our first border crossing by train. Customs was probably the easiest we have had yet, we filled in departure forms, arrival forms flashed the passports and got back on the train again! Well we were told it left at 6pm so we settles ourselves into the cafe with a drink and cards. Then the thought occured at 4.45 that malay time is an hour ahead so it was actually 5.45pm. We moved quite quickly from the cafe to the platform where our train was waiting. We arrived at Butterworth at 9.30pm where we hopped on a ferry to Penang and the city of George town. Once off the ferry we hung around for a bus before deciding to walk as none of them seemed to be going where we wanted to ... read more

This was to be a fairly long journey so I broke it up and stopped for a night halfway in a city called Ipoh. The book suggested it was worth a stop, but sadly it wasn't. The place is a large lattice of big dangerous roads and not much else. I saw one guy get knocked off his scooter by a lady driving one-handed while talking on a mobile phone. Amazed I didn't see more accidents. There are some interesting cave temples nearby, but I waited and waited for the bus which never seemed to arrive so I took a walk around the city in the afternoon. When the rain started I took cover in an all day bar where nice girls served me up beer and sweet & sour chicken while I waited for the ... read more

It was a really long journey from Ton Sai to the Cameron Highlands - left my bungalow at 7 AM and arrived at the Cameron Highlands the next day at 2 PM making it a 36 hr trip .... must admit with a few stops in South Thailand's Hat Yai and Malaysia's Kuala Lumpur. The Cameron Highlands (www.cameronhighlands.com) are a plateau in the vast jungle of Malaysia. Malaysia's landmass must be coverd to 95% by jungle according to what I've seen from the plane when leaving it and on the bus. Most amazing, most humid, most dangerous (home of snakes, tarantulas, butterflies :o) ) There's not much to do except going for a trek into the jungle and doing the day tour around the diverse businesses they are trying to establish or have established - tea ... read more

Back to reality. We arrived in Malaysia on the 23/11, and had a bit of a shock. It was like driving back into the UK (proper roads and civilisation)! We took a bus from Thailand (after sailing from Lipe) into Penang in Malaysia. We had three Indian guys on the bus who struggled to get through the border; the Police gave them a hard time as to why they were here etc. I think they were pretty miffed when we breezed through! Being a former British colony the British influence can still be seen (Tesco, boy racers, Tea)! The following morning we did a brief tour of Penang/George Town. It’s made up of a sprawling city, fairly modern and developed nothing like what we left behind in the rest of SE Asia. In the afternoon we ... read more

After the seaside, the mountains! It was raining and it was cold but we had a great time. The tea plantation and factory were really interesting and the landscapes were stunning. we also visited a butterfly farm which was nice. And, yes, the guest house we stayed at was just brilliant!... read more

The last few days have been fantastic! My last entry was written in Cherating which is a small village half way up the east coast. It was a fairly uneventful 2 nights there except for one rather grumpy monkey. We were leaving the beach cafe heading back to the room to be confronted by an angry looking chap on the overhead cables. He was pulling a face which resembled something like the zombies of 'Shaun of the dead"! and was doing little silly jumps at us. It was either in an attempt to stop us trying to chat his lady up, or he was a rabid beas! I suspected the latter and we made an alternatve exit route! The Perhentian islands were a different matter! They were amazing. We started on the smaller of the 2 ... read more

Severe sunburn (the result of snorkeling, I blame the fish - they are too pretty, you spend all that time looking down and then the sun gets mad and takes it out on your back) caused me to retreat, like generations of colonial Englishmen before me to the cool, refreshing climate of Malaysia's hill stations. To the Cameron Highlands in the central north peninsular, 2,000 ft up and you're almost 9,000 miles to the west and back in Surrey. Here is where Tea lives, oh that was a pleasure let me tell you, almost a pilgrimage as I had yet to see a Tea plantation and it's probably the closest thing I have to a religion. Tea is also my favourite Latin plant name, Camellia Sinensis, beautiful isn't it? I was practically chauffeured the six hours ... read more

There are two pages of pics and Mouton there is one of a snake - just to warn you! Day 192 (03.10.07) After getting up early for the bus we decided to walk to the bus station (trying to make back some of the shoe money we'd spent yesterday by not getting a taxi!) and left plenty of time to get there. The guy at the ticket office had told us where to go and it took less than half an hour to get there so we had about 40 minutes to wait and got some brekkie. With 15 mins to go before it was due to leave, Mark went over to one of the drivers to see if our bus had already arrived and if we could put our bags on. The question drew blank ... read more

My friend told me that he spend four hours have his nice and relaxing afternoon tea in one of the tea plantations up in Cameron Highlands and strongly encouraged me to do so...I was like... ok...but maybe not sitting there for four hours straight then. Considering I do not know which plantation he was refering to, I took the liberty explored the whole Cameron Highlands and I am 101% sure this must be it - Cameron Bharat Plantations. The view from the tea house was fantastic. Never seen anything as green as these after staying in KL for a decade (well, of course, Taiping wasn't so bad either). I will let my photos do the talking for me while you all enjoy the "greenery" then.... read more
