After a hard day watching body piercing and coconut smashing, it was off to the cooler climates of the Cameron Highlands for a few days. We've travelled on a full range of Malay buses to date from the super luxury to the speeding - the bus to the Cameron Highlands was neither and there seemed considerable doubt as to whether it would actually make it up some of the climbs to get there! It was approximately 5 1/2 hours before we alighted in the town of Tanah Rata - the hub of the Cameron Highlands. Tanah Rata apparently translates as flat lands, but it was a relative term after a 2 1/2 hour climb from the nearest major centre, Ipoh. One of the few totally accurate statements we have found from the SE Asia version of ... read more

i thought i'd first have a little question and answer session here because there's a lot people want to know! i have no idea what the story is on the pink taxis (see Pulau Pangkor). i haven't read anything about it - they're just there! i thought they were very cute. Very cozy with four people and lots of backpacks! :) As for the scorpion farms, the scorpions are kept in little glass containers, and the people who work there bring them out - and they put them on people's arms for pictures and stuff. Won't happen to me! There were also lost of spiders in there...not a fan of spiders either. Although i did share my shower this morning with a rather large eight-legged creature. I didn't know if he would jump or try to ... read more

OK, so it's really not that cold - it's anywhere from 17-20 degrees. But after 40 degrees, it sure feels cold! It was raining when we left Pulau Pangkor, and when we got to the Cameron Highlands around 6pm i actually pulled out my fleece. Brrrrrr! Emily and I travelled here with Klaas (who we met on the island) - we sure feel safe walking around with a guy like him!! He's at least 2 heads taller than me :) Anyways, it was another long travel day - Tanah Rata is cute and small so we didn't have any trouble finding a hostel - Twin Pines. The owner here is super nice - he's a doctor with his own clinic, and he just comes around every once in a while and chats with the guests. Emily ... read more

... read more

Last night was the first time in nearly two months I had to really pull the blanket up in bed. Still wearing a t-shirt and with a couple of blankets over me it was still chilly. I'm not used to it! Anyway, today I woke up dreading the thought of having to have a cold shower, so I stayed in bed, wrapped up and read a book. Eventually hunger got the better of me, as usual, and I decided I'd better get up for breakfast. To my surprise it was not only a nice day out, but there was hot water in the showers!! Perfect! So, after a long hot shower and a tasty breakfast I headed for the hills. I'd been reliably informed that it was dead easy to navigate round the numbered paths as ... read more

Imagine being a Chinese dyslexic!!? Thankfully I can spel ok, but I imagine dyslexia to be rather frustrating at times. The Chinese alphabet is pretty large so it must be a nightmare being dyslexic in China, and as there are several billion Chinese speakers/readers there must, proportionately, be more dyslexics too? It looks so tough to understand, it might mean you're more likely to struggle with the language anyway.... ...Well, in Malaysia I don't think it's possible to be dyslexic as they spell things as they sound. I got on a bus to KL Sentral. I got off the bus and opposite was a snuker hall, next to a farmasi. And there are many other words that they make less kompleks! (I just can't think of them right now! Knew I should have written them down!) ... read more

had just finished typing this entry, when I lost it all - Arrrggghh! So I will start again recounting our tales............ We enjoyed our last couple of days in Gerorgetown. We visited the fort, the highlight for both of us was a swing that they had attached to a tree there - I don't think that was supposed to be the highlight, but never mind, we both enjoyed ourselves! We visited the toy museum on Penang - Rob was in his element. They had various figures, from numerous films over the years. Rob was suffering a severe deficiency due to a lack of television watching (we haven't seen anything significant since leaving Vietnam). So we went to the cinema and watched, 'A Night in the museum' which we both enjoyed. I even stayed awake for the ... read more

Happy New Year everybody! We headed for the Cameron Highlands for three nights of luxury at the Strawberry Park Resort (a Christmas pressie from the Worthing based Santa!). Really fab room (bigger than our flat at Willow Court!) with a cool view and an excellent breakfast buffet, which we definitely made the most of! We've really enjoyed a few nights with our own bathroom and a bit more space! Only slight drawback was that the hotel was an hour and a half walk from the town, and so we got to know most of the few taxi drivers based in Tanah Rata , the town down the road. Anyway, apart from enjoying the space (and the cooler climate- it can get as low as 16 degrees here at night!!), we've been getting back to nature! As ... read more

I'm basically just spending a lot of time on the internet today because my ankle is too sore to be able to explore the area very much. That's too bad, because there are a lot of cool agri-tourism things I'd like to see on our last day in the Cameron Highlands, but oh well. Anyways, since I'm sitting on the internet I thought I'd use some of the time to post some pictures from the last few days. Enjoy!... read more
