Hello. So then here are the first pictures from Malaysia, we arrived from Singapore at the beginning of the week and spent a night in Melacca, a lovely city with a really old china town and some of the oldest dutch buildings in asia. We then zoomed up to the captial to meet Rachel who flew in from leeds a couple of days ago. We spent a couple of fun days in the big smoke that is KL. We have lots of exciting things to say about it (and about singapore) but we will add that later, off now back to our hostel for a game of uno, oh and maybe try and get those nails apart again. We are staying in the Cameron Highlands about 4 hours from KL. it is colder here and they ... read more

Hello... well after spending another night in Penang, we've travelled up to the Cameron Highlands to enjoy some cool, drizzly British weather! We visited a tea plantation and butterfly farm here- which featured a few nasties as well (namely snakes and scorpions). We're now in Kuala Lumpar- staying in China Town.... read more

Time to leave Kuala Lumpur again - this time for the Cameron Highlands, a temperate highland region two hours' drive to the north of the capital. We have been looking forward to visiting the highlands as the average temperature there is ten degrees below what we have been used to for the last three months ! That and the absence of humidity makes the Cameron Highlands a very popular stopover for visitors to peninsular Malaysia. As we get off our bus from Kuala Lumpur in Tanah Rata, the main "town" in the Cameron Highlands - more of a large village really - the drop in temperature hits us immediately. On go the jumpers - and they won't come off for our entire time here ! In fact on several occasions during our two-day stay here we ... read more

Saturday 19th August Paul - Couldn't find where our bus was leaving from this morning (it's a tiny village with a bus stop...SURELY the bus stop!?) so had a mad scramble about to find it parked in a car park set back from the main road. Bizarre. Typical long bus journey (7 hours) involving hilarious westerners boasting about their travels and telling me how amazing the Playstation 3 will be "cuz it'll have the best graphics like....like...like.......ever!" Delightful and informed that's what I like! Also a random Irish guy proclaimed to the bus "this place is nothing like Ireland". Where do these people get such intelligent and witty comments from? Arrived in the highlands after a beautiful drive up a winding road past lots of tea plantations and rose gardens. The highlands is at an altitude ... read more

I've had such a great time during my two days in Tanah Rata! It is such a laid-back town with great weather. The funny thing is - 'great weather' is now defined as cool, clean mountain air with a lovely breeze. That's what happens after spending a month in 30+ sun! The first morning in the dorm I realised why Allison had been complaining about the amount of sleep to be had in the mornings....everyone was up and about by around 8, making you feel like a fool if you wanted to sleep more. So what could me do? We got up. Keith and I headed into town for breakfast - going to the same stalls to have some egg-roti which you dip into some brown, tasty sauce (or SOS as had been written on the ... read more

As sad as I was to say goodbye to Hady and Philip at Equator, it was time to move on to cooler climes. The bus up to Tanah Rata was every bit as stomach churning as I'd expected. Buses that big shouldn't go that fast around tight corners on mountain roads, but I survived! I had only planned to stay one full day to see the tea plantations but they're closed on Mondays and so another day was added on. I stayed at "Fathers Guest House" which I wasn't overly keen on at first but really didn't want to leave after a couple of nights. I was staying in the dorm (a nissan hut) at a record breaking cost of RM8 (£1.20) a night! Highlights of the Cameron Highlands were... * watching the world cup final, ... read more

Selamat Detang again, this time from the lush green and refreshingly cool Cameron Highlands. Only four and half hours north of KL, up some very steep and windy roads, certainly not made with tourist buses in mind!! (I think it's best not to look!!) When we arrived it was raining, and we could watch the mizzle blowing across the valley, just like at home!! We are staying in a hostel in Tanah Rata, the largest town in the area, it is certainly a tourist trap, but the people are exceedingly friendly and helpful, except for the guy in the town's main tourist office!!!" No they don't have any maps of the walks in the area and there are no plans to print more, the largest flower in the world, the Rafflesia isn't in bloom at the ... read more

I flew into Singapore after a fairly boring few days in Brisbane. Once you've visited the 30,000 museums and galleries, theres not a lot else you can do for free, I have memorised the Brisbane city layout now though, so if I come back with a work visa, I can always go for a job as a cab driver. Singapore! I arrived at about 9pm, and my airport pickup didn't come to pick me up, which was fine though, as it gave me the chance to use the Singapore public transport system, which is pretty damn good. The trains arrive on time, and they are spotless, in 4 days of using trains every day, only 1 smelt like urine. So I jumped on the train and headed to Little India. I wasn't able to get ... read more

Ok well I guess this could be a long one. It's been a while. I left Kuala Lumpur I don't know how many days ago and headed for the magnificent Perhentian Islands. The weather was great and I think I got the best tan ever. But that was basically it....hanging out on the beach. The internet was outrageously expensive so I got some catching up to do now. The first day on the island I ran into Mark and Amber, two Canadians I met on the beaches of Cambodia. That was cool cuz they had a huge group all getting together for supper that night. And there was a 'Pirate Party' on the neighbouring island so we were going to dress up like pirates and head that way. I spent about half an hour throwing together ... read more
