The Bus ride Besides being booked onto the wrong bus (not 24 but 36 seater) and being sent from one unknowladgable person to the next I got onto the bus to Cameron Highlands which is a 4 1/2 hour bus ride (was told 3 1/2) away from Kuala Lumpur. I was proud to achieve this in Europe daily task, which develops in the busy Kuala Lumpur Busstation to an unforgettable experience. Stalls offering fresh fruit cut in bite-sized pieces (guess with little teeth it is difficult to bite from a fruit) such as Mango, Pineapple, Apple and other fruits I am not sure what they were such as a combination of a pear and apple, very juicy though. Everywhere you will find busy sales people from bus agents trying to sell you even a second ... read more

Mon 16th: So up early we get, check out of hotel and trek about and a half miles to the City bus station (It's all very confusing as they have about 5 or 6 different bus stations here). We pay the 7.90 RM and book the bus to Tanah Rata (stopping briefly to try some Malaysian snack type things for breakfast - Note it's a strange medley of food here, but with historical input from Indian, Chinese, Traditional Malay, British, Dutch and Portugese cultures it's no wonder the food is so diverse, the language is also a mixture of all the above aswell.). We're soon going to take a photo of us with our bags on, they're about twice the size of other backpackers and twice the weight too. So we arrive at Tanah Rata ... read more

We arrived in Tanah Rata just as the rain came on and it chucked it down! A proper tropical storm. Our journey had begun the night before when we left Kota Bahru for the train to Kuala Lumpur (KL), 15 hours later we arrived and hunted down breakfast before catching a 4 hour bus up to the Cameron Highlands. It was a lovely, if twisty, drive up the rain forest covered hills. We couldn't believe the size of the ferns and banana leaves growing at the side of the road, they were massive. The ferns were at least 3m tall! Nothing like that on Stoneymollan. Unfazed, we headed out in the rain (an urgent trip to the laundrette) and got wet. It's not so bad being wet here as it's still warm enough to dry you ... read more

Cooling off in the Highlands Asia » Malaysia » Cameron Highlands » Tanah Rata By justwanderingMarch 29th 2007Now climbed up to the relative cool of the Cameron Highlands, at 4,000 to 5,000 feet. Quite spectacular scenery - vegetable farms, tea estates, and cloud (the "white witch") enveloping the hills.... read more

The Journey to the Cameroon Highlands was made on a Super VIP bus no less. It was about a 5 hour journey, and it set us back about 4 pounds each. I can't stress how comfortable these coaches are, the seats are pretty much like sitting in a first class airline seat, and its just the best way to get about. Why people take long distance taxi's here I will never know. The Cameroon Highlands is about the nearest you will get in Malaysia to British weather. The temperature hovers at around 23C and it rains (and I mean good old fashions Lake District Style Downpours) mostly every day. Plus usually the downpours are prolonged and accompanied by Thunder and Lightning. Its great. If you know my wife, and how much she likes hot weather ... read more

On Wednesday we had an early start as we had to get the ferry over to the main land to catch our bus, which we did with plenty of time to spare. The ferry didn’t cost us a penny or a ringgit, which was a result. We then had over an hour to wait before the bus left as we were told it left 30 minutes before it actually did, so wee grabbed a cup of tea in a dirty café. After a 6 hour bus ride we made it to the Cameron Highlands, which were much more pleasing on the eye than Penang. We had decided to stay in Father’s Guest house and wee were pleasantly surprised to discover that they were waiting for backpackers and offered free transport there, a right touch! The guest ... read more

We got up on Wednesday & checked out; we got the ferry to Butterworth which turned out to be free which was a bonus & were at the bus station in plenty of time. We had to wait for 2 hours for the bus which left at 10.30am; we stopped in Ipoh for lunch & arrived in the Cameron Highlands town of Tanah Rata at 3.30pm. We got a lift to a guest house which was recommended in my book & got a tour of the place. We secured a room for the three of us in what can only be described as an army bunker from the war. We had some food & a few beers & played cards, (Uno & Presidents & Arseholes) in our room. On Thursday we got up, had cold showers, ... read more

Our first impressions of the Cameron Highlands were not as imagined. The town of Tanah rata was plain. However once we headed out of the town it was beautiful!! We got a taxi up the windy hills to the Sangai Tea plantation. It was so vast with tea-trees covering the hills all around us, green in colour. We visited the factory which smelled really strong!! Then we sampled the 'Palas Supreme' Best of highlands or 'BOH' tea which really was lovely. After we had a four hour walk back down the windy hills where the views were stunning!! We stopped at an English house called 'Ye olde Smokehouse"!! It was just like sitting in a Surrey country house!!! We sat in the gardens and had a cream tea!!! Scones and tea!!! Delicious! We were tired so ... read more

Saturday 19th August Well we only just managed to leave the jungle in the end due to a problem finding our bus which Paul eventually did and directed it in the direction of me and Laura. So off we set to the Cameron Highlands with idiots all over the bus, like the bus driver telling people if you get denghi fever (not sure if thats how you spell it?) just drink 100 plus, which was a sort of Lucozade drink which all the locals drank, obviously coca-cola the company who makes it had just gone there and said yeah dont worry drink this and you will never be sick again. Fortunately we didnt need his advise as we didnt catch it. Anyway the drive to the Cameron Highlands was really beautiful going up winding hills past ... read more

The Cameron Highlands - high in the mountains covered in lushous jungle green. THIS is my new paradise! We left Pulau Pangkor and enjoyed another non-express bus adventure. Riding with the locals on a bus that appeared to be falling apart, people jumping on and off everywhere and anywhere along the highway, and of course, a lovely stop at a road stop cafe to use the toilet. Let me take this opportunity to tell you about the toilets in Asia - there are 2 kinds. First, the "western imitation" which includes a a normal porcelian bowl (cleaned very UNregularly) minus the comfy restful seat. This is an extreme exercise for your legs as you hover. Most adventures are BYOTP (Bring your own TP). Afterwards, the look of "whew, I survived" crosses your face, you RINSE your ... read more
