Polly: We had a scenic drive up to the town of Tanah Rata, in the Cameron Highlands. The Cameron Highlands is a plateau to the northeast of Kuala Lumpur, on the edge of the Malaysian jungle. The climate is ideal for growing all sorts of fruits and vegetables on the man-made terraces cut into the hillsides. On arrival we were both relieved by the drop in temperature, from about 32 to 20 ºC in the day. We got a lift to our guest house, KRS Pines, just up the hill from the town. A bit hungry after being on a coach and missing lunch, we dumped our bags and went in search of food. There weren't many restaurants in the small town, so we settled on the 'Steamboat' and enjoyed Nasi Goreng & Beef Rendang. Fed ... read more

Helloooooooooooooo Amigo's Nic - So we made a 6hr bus ride up to the Cameron Highlands - Malaysia's garden where they seem to grow absolutely everything, from watercress to sweetcorn, to strawberries and tea - tonnes of the stuff! It's a pretty constant climate here and so everything can be grown year round, which I found extremely exciting when I saw how many strawberry farms there were!! - Dad, you should try growing yours like this, it'd be much easier, and no weeds!! We arrived off the freezing AC bus, expecting to be enveloped in warm stuffy air as usual, and were promptly refreshed to find that the air was no warmer than on the bus....bbbbrrrrrrrr...where did I put my jumper??!! Dan - Yes she was very cold poor mite. HOWEVER as soon as we stumbled ... read more

Half of the people in Cameron Highlands are of Chinese descent, around 30% Indian, and the rest Malay. The Cameron Highlands is an old British hill station and (according to an informative Indian shopkeeper in town where I bought a ton of tea) since the British already knew how to efficiently utilize the Indian caste system in India they decided to bring them here and plug them into the tea industry. Indians were given specific jobs according to their caste and paid based on the daily amount they produced so there was incentive for work. The British brought over Sri Lankans, who were more highly-educated than the Indians, to supervise. But the Indians kept needing to go back to India and the British couldn't understand why. Since Indians were only here as workers, none of their ... read more

So I just arrived in the Cameron Highlands which is located in the central western region of Malaysia. This was my first real taste of what I can call paradise. Many travelers reading this are probably scratching their heads thinking there are other greater places than this, but I've only been in Asia for two weeks and up until recently I've been bogged down in major cities. Its about 1500 m into the highlands which means that it is hilly, cool and very tranquil. It took about 4.5 hours to get here from KL by bus where half of the time was just climbing the hills. The LP says this is the land where bus drivers age quickly and their buses come to die. I can see why !!!! A little frightening going around blind ... read more

The journey to the Cameron Highlands was very understated in our lonely planet guide, it was breathtaking ! Had a couple of days in a cooler climate but also less mozzies so thats better. This is a tea producing region and as the pictures show it looks like telly tubby land. Amazing scenery and we drove to the highest mountain in the area to get a fantastic view. We had a guide who took us into the Mossy forest, which was very mossy. Within a short walk (About 100 yards !) he showed us about 10 useful plants and trees for healing, curing and surviving ! So many smells that you would recognise for products back in the UK are straight from the trees out here ! Off to the big smoke (Kuala Lumpur) for some ... read more

Hi All, Once all our friends had left it was also time for us to leave the Perhentians. We made the deicision, booked our boat and started packing. Finola cooked us up a farewell dinner of pasta (with real parmesan), and we stayed up with her drinking our last beers and finishing off our Thai Song. The boat back to Kuala Besut left at 8am, so we trudged down the beach, and hopped onto a taxi boat to take us out to our speedboat. We arrived back at the jetty, found our bus and then had about 1/2 hour to kill before the bus left. The minibus took us about halfway, and then it was a change to another bus an onto the Cameron Highlands. The buses are all linked to travel agencies, that are generally ... read more

This is the first time we visited Cameron highland. We drove for approximately 4 hours from Kuala Lumpur and arrived at Cameron Highland in the afternoon. After checking in to a dormitory-like budget hotel in Tanah Rata, we thought of visiting the famous Boh Tea Farm. But it was a lil' too late in the evening to drive all the way from Tanah Rata to the tea farm. It was a long and winding road, so we change our itinerary to visit the small town of Tanah Rata for the day. We walked to the local Convent school from the hotel, the weather started to get cold and a bit foggy. The school is surrounded by many kinds of flowers, as u can see from the pic. It looks totally like a church from outside, really ... read more

Date visited: 16th-18th April Our journey to this Englishy hill region of Malaysia (North, North-West) with its rose gardens, tea and scone cafe's and cooler air was a bit of a self inflicted epic! The lengths we went to to avoid a very heavily criticised coach company based in Panang meant us getting up at 5 am where we taxied to the jetty, ferried to the mainland, trained it for 3 hrs to Ipoh only to end up at Ipoh bus station having to use the same coach company (we couldn't find the other company!) Luckily we boarded just before it left for the Cameron Highlands which meant we could keep our luggage with us (where travellers previously have reported their bags being stolen/lost at the various drop-offs). The driver luckily seemed sane unlike some stories ... read more

The centre of the highlands is Tanah Rata, the base for all the enthusiastic walkers and trekkers that fill up the guesthouses in the Cameron Highlands. Stepping off of the coach, I was collared by a shifty Malay guy in a leather jacket, saying things like, "what's up pardner?" and "need a place to stay?" in a cruel skeleton of hollywood/malay english. I've learnt to accept these offers without a blink of an eye (there were no Hostel/Saw/Wolfcreek vibes off of this guy). It keeps me interested and to be honest, these chances have repeatedly been the better choices on my journey. So, without much further discussion and a swift exchange of cigarettes and male nods, I slung my backpack into the unmarked van and we bobbled up towards a cluster of buildings on one of ... read more

Well after seeing Fiona off to the airport Nick and I made our way down to Phuket. We’d heard a lot of things about it so we wanted to see what all the fuss was about. It was a 20hr journey but the scenery was stunning, massive white rocks with greenery covering the tops, palm trees lining the streets and stunning clear blue sky. However when we arrived we were extremely disappointed. We made our way to the beach only to find it was completely covered in sun beds, it was like Spain but in Asia. The streets were lined with pubs and clubs and everything was extremely expensive. Needless to say we only stayed for 2 of our 4 nights planned there. We then made our way down to Malaysia, 13hrs on a 7 seater ... read more
