Sawadee Kap ! Or "hello" if you don't speak Thai.. (I don't actually speak Thai, but I know how to say "hello" !) Anyway.. I digress... Well here I am finally.. I've come from below zero temperatures and landed in the most humid country in the world.. so a little acclimatising is required... I flew China Southern Airways from Shanghai to Guangzhou in China, and then Air Kenya on to Bangkok. The flight landed about 11:30pm, I jumped straight into a taxi and had another white-nuckle cab ride to the hotel which was close to the airport... after about 20 mins driving up and down the same road and shouting at me in Thai he finally found the right road and I was in the hotel around 12:45pm.. the hostel was nice and I was shown ... read more

Ni Hao for the last time.. Well here is the end of China.. I've managed to keep to my schedule of 2 weeks so I can now look forward to relaxing and enjoying some warmth and a bit of relaxation.. I endured a 13 hour train journey from Beijing to Shanghai, and the train was fully packed. So I spent the journey pretty much lying in my little bunk, with my rucksack as an uncomfortable pillow and my backpack awkwardly to my side. I managed to get a few hours sleep though, so not all bad. I arrived around 11am, and after a short metro ride made it to the hostel by 12pm. My short time in Shanghai has been difficult, firstly because on the first day I came down with a nasty cold very quickly, ... read more

Hi there Well after a mammoth 12 hour train journey from Xi'an to Beijing I finally made it. I had a really uncomfortable time in Xi'an train station, where few english signs or speakers, and an overcrowded station made it a little intimidating.. but I managed to get some help to find from where my train departed.. and after a few hours sat down being stared at (yes.. proper stared at !).. finally I was on the train and on the way to Beijing. I was travelling by hard sleeper which is basically 6 beds in a cabin.. the upper class being soft sleeper which is 4 beds in cabin. By some freak piece of luck i was bunked directly opposite the only other westerner on the train ! A german girl.. who has been living ... read more

Hey there So here is the second entry on my blog (I'll try to improve on the spelling on this one - thanks sis :-P) So after finding out that it would be a 24 hour train journey from Guangdong (just over the border of China from Hong Kong) to Xi'an, I decided it would be a shame to waste a day and better to take a flight instead. So on Friday evening I took a flight from HK to Xi'an. It was just a 2 & 1/2 hour flight with China Eastern and was pretty comfortable. On arrival there was a bus that collects for all people going into the city and so I hopped on that and about 1 & 1/2 hours later I was in centre of Xi'an. It was a short walk ... read more

Ni hao.. or hello if you dont speak Chinese.. Well, arrived safe and well in Hong Kong after a 12 hour flight direct from London. I flew British Airways who are not the epitomy of luxury travel, but they get you there nonetheless. However I did doubt the latter part of that sentence for a moment as we were sat on the runway for 1&1/2 hours while they de-iced the wings, which involved turning off the aircon and creating a sauna in the cabin. Apart from that, a screaming child on the left and a moaning old couple on the right, there was not much I could complain about. Arrived mid afternoon local time and the new airport was easy to navigate and I was soon on the MTR train to Kowloon central, near to where ... read more

Queensland, Australia. The sunshine state. After a 3 & 1/2 hour bus journey from Canberra it was just 1 hour & 15 mins flight to Coolangatta which is the Gold Coast airport, right on the border of New South Wales and Queensland. The airport is a tin shack. I took off the plane and walked through to where I would collect baggage and there was my friend Kylie waiting for me in the baggage hall. Basically, anyone can walk it and take a bag. They wouldn't have got far with mine though, it was so bloody heavy! So I'm gonna keep this last blog brief as the last 3 weeks of my trip were more about spending time with my friends Kylie & Neil & their little boy Lachlan than tearing around places like I have ... read more

Ok ok ok.... so Australia !!! Sorry this has been so long coming (that’s if you’re not sick of receiving the updates email yet!). It took a few days to get to Sydney from Kota Kinabalu in Borneo. I had to fly from KK to Johor the southernmost state of Malaysia on the Peninsula, and then take a bus to Singapore. This is only a short journey by distance, but it includes taking one bus to the Malaysia border, disembarking to clear Malaysia customs, taking another bus along the causeway which links Malaysia to Singapore, and the disembarking for Singapore customs, and then taking another bus to the centre of Singapore. It's just bloody awkward, that's all. I had to stay a day and night in Singapore before flying to Sydney. I had plenty to do, ... read more

So, on to the final stop of my journey in Borneo. I had to take a boat from Pulau Labuan to Kota Kinabalu. This was a very choppy ride. I was sat at the front of the boat with no window, and the boat was hitting the waves hard. So it was a white knuckle ride all the way. The crew were havin a laugh when they put the Godzilla movie on the tv. There were some very nervous people. Not the nicest 3 hours I have ever spent on a boat, although the movie was good. Arrived into KK in early evening. I found in the travel bible a cheap hostel called Step In Lodge. Dorm bed with fan just 25 Ringitt (GBP4ish) a night with breakfast. Met a scuba diving couple from Essex and ... read more

Since I spent much more time than anticipated in Kuching I had some ground to make up on my journey to the top of Borneo. So I spent the next three nights traveling through Miri, Bandar Seri Bagawan and Pulau Labuan (Labuan island).. First stop was Miri. This is still in Sarawak, Malaysia territory. I had two options - 16 hour direct bus journey, or boat trip inland through river to Sibu & 7 hour bus journey from there to Miri. I took the boat option as it's more scenic and I don't like sitting around on buses for hours on end. 7am start, the boat journey was a little choppy as we hit a monsoon. I liked the staffs sense of humour as they played Hellraiser 2 & 3 on the tv while people were ... read more

Borneo!! I arrived in the sunny island after a flight from Langkawi via KL. I am staying first in Kuching, which is the state capital of Sarawak, the southernmost of the two Malaysian states in Borneo. I arrived late at night & headed straight to the hostel, Singgahsana Lodge. The book highly recommended it. It is fantastic - well driven to a travellers needs. It is on 5 floors. A lobby, with internet. two floors of sleeping rooms, and a bar on the top which you have free use of the tv & dvd player (for evenings & when the monsoons set off!) Kuching River runs through the middle of the city, and the lodge is right close to the waterfront area which is well developed and nice to walk around. At night it's lit up ... read more
