It's been a wee while since I last wrote and I don't know where to start! Ko Phangan was so nice, had a ball there. I spent most of my time just chilling out on the beaches or by the pool at my hotel. It's a real party place so of course I just had to partake in one or two beach parties, well it would be rude not to! Met some really nice people there and was sad to leave but alas the traveling must continue. I left there one week ago and took an overnight train to Butterworth in the north of Malaysia. I thought it would be plain sailing as I had booked the sleeper train but of course nothing runs on time and it turned up at 2am! One I found my ... read more

We arrived in Cameron Highlands after a painful (for Steve) fourteen hour journey, to a place called Thana Rata. Cameron Highlands is the largest hill resort in Malaysia and is 1524 m above sea level. Its famous for it's tea plantations, terraced flower gardens, orchards and strawberry and vegetable farms. The cool climate, 10-20 degrees, makes Cameron Highlands perfect for cultivation, and for cooling down hot backpackers! A fantasy-like Mossy forest is also located at the peak of the highlands, at 2032 m above sea level. I felt like the Cameron Highlands was a mixture of India, the alps with a old traditional British culture, and of course a bit of malay. The restaurants here are mostly Indian, serving south indian food on banana leafs and rotis with dahl for 20 pence. Many of the cafes ... read more

71 days backpacking through 3 different countries, taking in the sights, trying the local food, avoiding the bedbugs and hopefully coming across lots of photo opportunities……well, that’s the plan anyway!!! We left Widnes on 11th March and travelled by train from Runcorn to Stanstead where we caught our flight to Kuala Lumpur capital city of Peninsular Malaysia. The Air Asia flight was a bargain - £327 each for a return ticket. This was the Inaugural flight on this route (a big deal for both Air Asia and Stanstead Airport). The check-in desks were swamped with journalists and TV camera crews from the UK and Malaysia….a bit cringey being filmed checking in!!! After a 13hr flight we arrived in KL to another entourage of journalists etc, we caught a bus to KL centre 1 hr away then ... read more

The Cameron Highlands Don’t say you’ve seen the sunset! Monday 9th March2009 The five hour coach journey from Kuala Lumpur to Tanah Rata in the Cameron Highlands took us through some stunning countryside. Unfortunately, unlike the coaches from Singapore to Melaka and Melaka to KL, this one was a 1960s bone shaking relic with windows so dirty that photos of the waterfalls and mountains we passed were impossible to take. The hostel that we had pre-booked was a flophouse, and it was sweltering hot when we arrived (as we expected) not “cold” as the Indian proprietor had claimed on the phone; his excuse for not providing room fans in the tropics! No loo paper in the loos here and at the reception desk they sold me a loo roll for 70 sen. That’s a first; plenty ... read more

I had my doubts about going to the Cameron Highlands as the description in the Lonely Planet didn't sound too exciting. A lot of strawberry farms, tea plantations and a great risk to get lost, great! I could care less about these farms and plantations and I do have a tendency to get lost, but that's mostly in cities without signs. I knew there would be a bunch of walks to do but I had no idea what kind of walks. A limey I met convinced me though that there would be really nice ones. So I made up my mind to go there, even though I met an old Spanish geezer who told me I should skip it. So I got on another really comfortable bus. They did however run a halfhour of some kung ... read more

Oops! Seems like I've recieved a lot of hate mail from people taking offence to my blog. I just noticed... I better give these people some love and post their comments. I'll be sure to keep a better eye in the control panel in the future so more hate from my dear readers can be published! But folks, isn't it more fun when a grumpy old bastard is malcontent and dissing "everything"? Yep, seems like I've been doing only that from my reader's reactions. And for your information, I dislike most locals, even the ones in my own country! :-)... read more

Hi we are now in Malaysia at the Cameron highlands, where they grow loads of tea. Moving on to KL breifly tomorrow, to get our trip sorted for the Tam nagara rainforest. After that we are going back to KL to do some retail therapy, then on to singapore. Heard that the bar is finished at the hurtwood, please can someone send us a photo as we really want to see what it looks like, heard there was a massive falt screen and sofas? Theres lots of walking to do here, and katie splashed out the other day and bought a new pair of plimsoles, as you can't really do the walk in flip flops. So we did a very boggy walk in the afternoon, and Katie took a leap, thinking that the ground she was ... read more

I'm back in Kl now after spending a few days in the Cameron Highlands. It's the highest part of Peninsular Malaysia - the weather was in the 60s. Really beautiful scenery and some cool "agro-tourism", saw a tea plantation, strawberry farm, honey farm, and butterfly farm. Unfortunately I think my photos don't do the scenery justice, but I have some really cool pictures from the butterfly farm. Tomorrow I'm going to my friend's house to celebrate Chinese New Year, and then on Monday I'm flying to Thailand. I've been doing some pretty hardcore tourism the past few days (seriously really tired) and am ready for some time at the beach.... read more

After the Phi Phi experience, Koh Lanta was great - our bungalow right next to the virtually private beach was idyllic, so much more laid back and less crowded than it's Andaman neighbour. We did make it to the beach party for a bit and I managed to prove to myself that I am excellent at beach volleyball. Too much relaxing is always a bad thing, so we moved on to Penang after a couple of days. The 12hr journey was not as painful as I had expected, but all that way in minibuses with low seats and a serious lack of legroom for the tall gentleman is never an enjoyable experience. We survived on will power, Smarties and the positive vibes coming off the grumpy wizened monk who got on at Hat Yai and sat ... read more

After a pleasant and enjoyable stay in Kuala Lumpur, and after carefully avoiding the hordes of street sellers selling everything from massages, to knock off trainers, and wallets, we handed in our room key and dropped our bags in the back of our minivan for our long day of travelling to the Cameron Highlands towards the east of the country. We began to love the minivan experience. Each day you would alter your position in the van so that everyone would get a chance to have the best seats. It was something none of the group ever spoke of, but something I feel we all appreciated. Sadly Gavin, travelling on his own in the group, was left in the worst seats, finding himself adorned with various items of baggage. He’d wear backpacks as if they were ... read more
