Frenchies, continuez plus bas.... Hi everyone, Well, my first safari has ended yesterday and after an amazing 3,500 kilometers, 2 weeks, lot of dirt, sand, dust, amazing sights and awesome travel companions, I am in Johannesburg for the next 4 days to recuperate and sleep. Then it's back to the bush for a river/safari adventure in Botswana and Zambia for 2 weeks. Time is flying, I cannot believe I have been on the road for 4 weeks now. Africa is getting under my skin - in a good way - and the more I see, the more I want to see and understand. This trip so far has been like a blast of oxygen to the soul. I feel like on a different planet. I am not sure how else to describe it... It was really ... read more

I did not get to paraglide off Lion's Head! It was the one thing that I was really looking forward to, and it just was not a happening thing. I did get to walk up most of it yesterday, but didn't see all that much - it was cloudy, and I was in the cloud for most of the time. I then hit the turnaround time that I had set for myself, and was short of the peak. Today wasn't that much better. All looked fine for a great walk up onto Table Mountain, but I got about 30 minutes into the walk up Platakloof Gorge and it was back in the cloud. This was serious rain, helped along by the run-off from the top of the gorge walls. Did this in about 67 minutes, which ... read more

I chose this title not because we ran out of a restaurant without paying but because we have done lots of good eating and been really busy this week! We had a lovely week after saying a sad goodbye to 2 of our housemates, leaving just me and Nicola living with the family. Since then we've cooked, bar-b-qued, and watched lots of films. We were let out of work early twice this week - first time because teachers had marking to do and second time they wanted a meeting. It's great! I think that is one thing to recommend to Leeds Education! I have an interview on Tuesday to work after school at a home for abused children for a couple of weeks. So that should be interesting. ... read more

So believe it or not...i choose not because it makes me too sad...i have exactly 5 weeks left in Senegal starting today. I can't believe the semester flew by so fast, I feel like I've hardly been here at all. I finally feel like I've found a place in the routine of life here -- everyday i speak more and more wolof and I explore a little more of the city and come to know it a little bit better. there's still a lot of things that i want to do -- will do -- before i leave, namely travel up to St. Louis in the northern part of the country. I think we might be trying to plan it for not this coming weekend but next weekend. We'll see. So I have yet to start ... read more

Hello all What a wicked trip! Bargain subsidised work trip! One of best trips I have ever been on. It was great.. apart from company (he he he- only kidding!) Seriously after a 12 hour flight which I couldnt sit next to Rik on due to plane cock up everything else went swimmingly- lovely plane food and also wicked films (well on a Jaime scale i.e. Devil wears prada and the break up). When we arrived we checked into posh hotel (no hostel here.. just cos I wasnt paying full price!!) and then wandered to the waterfront where we started on the fish..... eating and also we went to the aquarium which was the best aquarium I have been to. Then we chilled out and went to cinema and realised how ripped off we are in ... read more

Can ‘Ya Say Kenya? I have broken through my writer’s block. My apologies for taking so long to report home. I hope the “time lag” does not take away from the “telling of the story”. Also please note, when you get to the end of the blog there is a second page of pictures that does not show unless you hit page 2. Thanks for all the support from home. We miss you! Arriving in Nairobi, Kenya in the middle of the night, our first task was to apply for our visas in a large room on the second floor of the airport. As I reached for the health form on the counter, where others were busily writing, I noticed a nice size cockroach walking across the stack. “Hmmm,” I thought, “this is going to be ... read more

After having a few days to ourselves, and in one location, at Livingstone, we were hitting the road again. Our destination was the city of Dar es Salaam in Tanzania, on the edge of te Indian ocean. From there we would be heading to the island of Zanzibar. We left Livingstone by bus, heading firstly to the city of Lusaka. The trip is about 450km and is supposed to take about 6 hours by bus. However we had heard some horror stories of it taking 12 hours. We chose a bus line that was recommended by some people we met and got on the bus with fingers crossed. It actually turned out not too bad. We left Livingstone an hour late, but the seats were comfy and there were no animals on board. The bus was ... read more

Farewell Foundiougne I have one full day left in Foundiougne. It’s been nearly seven weeks since I rolled into town full of enthusiasm and energy. There have been times where the weeks have felt like months as I’ve struggled to understand conversations. But there have been times when I’ve felt a real fondness for the town and I will be sad to say goodbye to some of the friends I have made here. I’ve been invited into many aspects of the town’s life that most of the visiting tourists would never see. Just the other morning, I found myself at the baptism ceremony for the nephew of WAAME’s Director, eating “Lakh” (A kind of warm millet porridge with cinnamon, raisins and soured milk), watching the cutting of a small lock of the baby’s hair and then ... read more
