Thailand’s Islands - and a Bustling Bangkok The trip from the Perhentian Islands in Malaysia to the mainland involved piling 7 people, with at least as many bags, into a little dingy with a very fast motor, the “captain” convincing some to get in by telling them they were headed for a bigger boat (not true). Nervous smiles and laughter were passed around as we crashed into waves, water soaking me to the skin every where but my hips which were squeezed between two other passengers and water tight. A few days earlier, Bryan and I had met a couple from Canada named Audrey and Andrew and the goal for the four of us was to head for the Tarutao National Marine Park in Thailand. The park consists of 51 large and small islands in the ... read more

Mentawai and Malaysian Moments Before I begin with our Malaysian musings, let me go back a few weeks prior to my arrival in Kuala Lumpur. Bryan had flown from South Africa to Kuala Lumpur ahead of me and decided to try and find some surf off the coast of Sumatra, Indonesia on the Mentawai Island of Siberut. As I cuddled with my daughter on Christmas, opening presents by a warm fire at my sister Susan’s and brother-in-law Brian’s home, Bryan was having a far more adventurous holiday. After unsuccessfully prodding him to write a blog on his experience, he has agreed to let me use an excerpt from one of his emails to me during this time. It’s a bit rough because it was originally intended for my eyes only and, wanting to retain the true ... read more

South Africa - Wine, Waves, and Wanderings We are often asked by those we meet on our travels what our favorite place has been. This is a difficult question to answer, because each country has its own flavor. But we usually say there have been two countries that have struck a cord in our soul by their immense natural beauty. One is Switzerland, and we’ll hold our Swiss Alps hike as a forever favorite. The other is South Africa. Neither Bryan, nor I, was prepared for the rugged coastline, beautiful parks, soaring mountains, green valleys, and diverse culture. Cape Town, dubbed by our guidebook as “…one of the world’s most beautiful cities”, was a welcome sight after our long bus ride from Windhoek, Namibia. We settled in the suburb of Sea Point, very near the coast, ... read more

Buses and Bouncing Cabooses Remembering back to our trip through Tanzania to southern Zambia and then on to Namibia, it is a blur of long, cramped, smelly, bus rides and days upon nights spent on an old train that jumped along bent tracks. Thank goodness for Bryan’s diary… oops, I mean “journal”, because it has helped to fill in the memory gaps. We left Moshi, at the base of Mt. Kilimanjaro for Dar es Salaam, on the northeastern coast of Tanzania, with Victoria Falls, Zambia as our ultimate goal. It was a 10 hour bus ride on seats about 7 inches too narrow and shallow (the more people squeezed in a bus, the more money the companies make), and Bryan and I were unable to sit together. I entertained the baby that sat to my right ... read more

Can ‘Ya Say Kenya? I have broken through my writer’s block. My apologies for taking so long to report home. I hope the “time lag” does not take away from the “telling of the story”. Also please note, when you get to the end of the blog there is a second page of pictures that does not show unless you hit page 2. Thanks for all the support from home. We miss you! Arriving in Nairobi, Kenya in the middle of the night, our first task was to apply for our visas in a large room on the second floor of the airport. As I reached for the health form on the counter, where others were busily writing, I noticed a nice size cockroach walking across the stack. “Hmmm,” I thought, “this is going to be ... read more

An Egyptian Education The lessons began as soon as we arrived… Bryan and I landed at the Cairo airport just after sunset. We purchased our visas and cleared customs without incident so we were able to quickly make our way to the baggage claim. While walking there, Bryan was stopped by a well dressed man with a name tag on his shirt that read “Official Tourist Agent”. He asked if we had a hotel and where we were staying. As Bryan tried to politely refuse his aid I slyly slipped away, thinking ‘Yah, right. Tourist agent? He’s just looking to steer us in the direction of a hotel that will pay him a commission.’ Feeling smug that I’d spotted that one right away and glad that Bryan was dealing with it, I waited on our bags, ... read more

Although we were geographical “right next door”, it took us 2 days to reach Bodrum, Turkey, via ferry from Sifnos Island to Siros Island to Kos Island to Bodrum. We thought island hopping our way there would be fun and since the ferries traveled at night, we could save some money on accommodations. At 3 PM, we rode our scooter down to the Sifnos dock and turned it in, a little worse for wear. We had several hours to waste before the 7 PM ferry to Siros so we sat in an internet café and watched the restaurant owners bring in their umbrellas as the wind swiftly began to pick up. The three weeks we spent on Sifnos had been beautiful with blue skies the whole time, so we joked about the approaching storm and how ... read more

I sit here now, on my little twin bed (most of the rooms we rent come with two twins) where I have spent the last 19 nights. It is the first time in our travels that we have settled somewhere for any length of time. Sifnos has turned out to be the secluded, quiet island that we hoped for. In the port town of Kamares, where we arrived, we rented a scooter so we could set out to see the island and decide where we should stay. The scooter rental shop gave us a rudimentary map of the island, with a key that literally said “good road” “bad road”, and Bryan did a quick practice run on the bike before I jumped on and we were off to explore. Along the way we saw multiple villages, ... read more

We spent all night on a most uncomfortable bus riding from The Pink Palace hostel on Corfu Island to Athens, Greece. My knees suffered from the sumo wrestler look-alike in front of me that pushed the reclining seat feature to its limits as he snored peacefully through the night. I had injured my neck earlier, having crashed into Bryan while body surfing a big wave, and found it impossible to find a comfortable position. Although Bryan managed to sleep a little bit, he readily agreed with my complaints as we waited outside a mini-market at 4:00 AM in the morning on those that needed a potty break. We arrived in downtown Athens at about 7:00 AM and our first priority was to find some strong coffee and breakfast. We walked several blocks before finding a little ... read more

Corfu - Playtime at The Pink Palace Leaving Rome, we were forced to backtrack through Bari to Brindisi, Italy before catching a ferry to Corfu Island, Greece. In Brindisi, we stayed the night in a little apartment/hotel complex near the port for convenience. In the morning when we enquired about buses or a taxi, the family that ran the complex was nice enough to offer us a ride to the ferry. We arrived at 11:00 AM giving ourselves our standard two hour leeway for our 1:00 departure. We had prepaid for our tickets online, so all we had to do was check in. It was a quiet little ferry port, reminding me of the ferry dock on the south end of Whidbey Island in the Puget Sound where I grew up. We inquired about check-in at ... read more
