Wow! What an amazing week we've had. After the disappointment of last week I needed something to really make me believe that we are here and making a difference rather than just being here! This week has installed so much belief and confidence in me I feel like a new person. Its probably been one of the best, most fulfilling weeks of my life! We've met some incredible people, seen some incredible places and more importantly ate some incredible food lol! the new project locations have really opened up my eyes and my belly ummmm! Anyway I really cant stay too long because I have to train the local rugby team but I've tried putting a fair bit of informatuion with the pics so go take a look gimps! The weekend is missing as I have ... read more

As easy as the words came to describe what we were going through when we were preparing to make this trip, I am finding it difficult to find the right ones to fill you in on what life has been like since we have arrived. Not the general life itself, as that is all coming along smoothly; but the real life that is going on here in Africa. A plethora of emotions transcends words. The look on a face can say more than the right string of letters in the right combination, put together with punctuation marks. What can you say about, for example, the little girl in the first picture? She was playing with this piece of red plastic on the way to one of the Bible studies we went to today. She was unconcerned ... read more

We decided whilst in Africa to go on a day Safari- and what a great decision. We left hotel at 6.50 am (which sucked) but when we got there about 2 hours later, again was well worth it. So we got in the jeep for 3 hour safari... and was it bumpy... well we were sat on back seats (Riks decision). ...was great fun though. We saw some amazing wildlife, zebras, wilderbeasts, rhinos, zebras, cheetahs, springbok, snakes and many more. Ill never forget getting out of the jeep and walking towards a group of Giraffes... it was truly amazing. It was also great to see the lions... even if their story is very sad. Believe it or not some very sick people (and unfortunately I understand its predominantly rich yanks and russkis) like to go to ... read more

So we made it through the most expensive country in Southern African without destroying the bank balance! We must thank our tent though. Without it, we'd be broke! Botswana is renound for it's expensive lodges and tourist facilities, but we managed to survive it all, and did a couple of guided tours aswell. We spent a few days in Kasane at the Chobe Safari Lodge's campsite. Nice place, but there's too many ants and monkeys that took a liking to our food! They had an awesome dinner buffet, but unfortunately, it cost more than our total daily budget, so we ate at the local Shoprite instead. We did a boat cruise here along the Chobe River into the National Park. this was totally different from anything we'd seen as it focuses on the animals around the ... read more

It cannot be said that my first visit to Goba, a town 14km south of Robe, was a roaring success! I had decided that this weekend I would go away, somewhere. I considered Dinsho, but nobody I spoke to was sure about how to get a bus there, and most said that it was even harder to get back. I was also told, that there is Internet access in Goba - the more I thought about it, the more I became obsessed about going there to spend many hours sending emails. I wrote emails in advance, saved onto a memory stick, and off I went. The bus journey was cheap (2 birr) and blessedly short - there is no tarmac on the road from Robe to Goba either. Goba looks like a set for a gold-mining ... read more

Short drive - long drink Today was what might be called a 'warmer/settler' day. Not too much time in the truck, introduction to dorm living and an alcohol fuelled tour of four regional wineries where the normal conventions of responsible service of alcohol were completely ignored. After the truck brief, we finally got away about 0930hrs, and were at Stellenbosh a little over an hour later. Much better views of Table Mountain! Stumblin Inn We arrived at a rather down at heal backpackers where the group was split up over two rooms. Given the gender mix - 16 pax, about 2/3 female - it was not going to be possible to have a boys and girls dorm. Especially when the four place room was a double and bunk beds. So much for any notion that we ... read more

Last week end 6 of us headed out to Soussevlei, which is home of the biggest sand dune in the world and is in the Namib desert. I'd be lying if I didn't say one of my main reasons for going was because we were told by a group of our guys that they didn't think we'd be able to do it. So clearly, super competetive Erin kicked into gear and had to prove them wrong. Just getting there was an adventure...the driver that was going to take us didn't have a working phone, so we had to just hope he'd appear, and sure enough he did. Just in time to figure out the center's combis that we were going to use were nowhere to be found. So 3 hours later, Mohamed and Joseph, our driver, ... read more
