We left for Okavango Delta early in the morning (Okavango Delta is where the river splays out to flat marshy ground). We were picked up by a converted cattle truck with seats where we packed all of our things for Okavango Delta. We arrived at the edge of the delta where we were met by the boatmen who would take us to our campsite in the delta. We sat very cosily in our dugout canoes while the polers pushed us (think venice) gently along the delta. We were able to see an elephant and baboons from the comfort of our boats. It was very relaxed indeed and a short nap later we arrived at the campsite. After chilling for a couple of hours (more sleeping on the 'beach'), we took a sunset 2 hour walk where ... read more

And so the traveling begins Africa » South Africa » Cape Town By erin_e July 16th 2007 Erin Enderud So Marnie and I arrived safe and sound in cape town at about 9 am local time (9 hours difference for those of you in calgary). The flight was not as bad as we thought a 12+ hour flight would be. We both amanaged to get some good sleep and we fairly rested when we got off the plane. Once we got off the plane and through Customs we headed over to baggage claim where Marnie was able to get her bag and I was left with just my carry-on. My checked baggage never came out of the shoot.... Thankfully I had been able to take my hikers back pack on the flights with me, or I ... read more

It started with the ride from the Vicfalls to the boarder!! We had a nice cab-driver who stopped for us when we saw our first big wildlife! an Giraffe and some Elephants!! The only way for us was to book a tour so we were picked up at the boarder, driven to the riverside and our boat was waiting for us. A bit more than 2 hours on the boat brought us back from animalplanet to the nice resort!! We had seen plenty of wildlife, Elephants, Hippo's to many impala's, Buffalo's Crocodiles and lots of birds!!! The game drive afterwards showed us even more!! Great place Chobe...wanted to stay and relax a bit...but the campgrounds was fully booked the next day.. Got up at 04:30....to make it in time to the only local bus from Kasane ... read more

It had been a cold night with little sleep. I looked out of the tent and found Mr Seja scraping off frost from his tent and efficiently packing his belongings into his red German rental car. We'd met him one day earlier as we - resembling two bagladies - had dragged our plastic-bagged belongings across the border at Maseru bridge. He was efficiency personified. Punctuality, rationality, German humour and break-neck driving skills all in one. With him behind the wheel we managed to see half the country in less than a week. - "Bloody cold wasn't it?" I called out, looking early morning grumpy. - “Not too bad, it was only minus three,” was his calm response before he smiled back at me. He was always optimistic and didn't fall for the disillusioned Swedes wining or ... read more

Morocco was rife with a wide variety of challenges...physical, cultural, mental, olfactory, gastrointestinal. You name it, we did our darnedest to beat it. Despite the tale of woe, hardships, climatic extremes and projectile vomit that you´re about to read, Morocco was one of the most rewarding destinations in our travels. Our ascent of Jebel Toubkal, highest mountain in north Africa was perhaps the highlight. The excitement builds...we´re bound for heights almost twice the altitude of the top of Australia, and it´s a challenge that we can´t wait to face. We´re travelling with our Swiss friend Andreas, and we´re grateful to have him and his mountaineering skills along for the ride. We make it to the tiny mountain village of Imlil (1600m) by the only way we can find from Marrakech - taxi. It´s the longest taxi ... read more

Heffalump Haven It was another long drive from Coffee Bay, which we were glad to escape, to Addo. After driving through East London we got to King William's Town, where we missed a turn and drove 25km in the wrong direction. However, despite the main route to Addo being closed due to roadworks, we found an alternative route to our hostel the Orange Elephant. We arrived to find the cosy two-bedroom cottage was all to ourselves because another couple had cancelled their booking. We would highly recommend this hostel to anyone wishing to visit Addo because they have a great little bar and the staff are very friendly, helpful and informative. Rach was initially a bit scared of John, the manager, because he looks suspiciously like the blue clown face guy in House of 1000 Corpses, ... read more

What can I say, apparently life is never going to be boring here!!!! I guess I should start from last Sunday, and my church invite. I was invited to the church by Joakim (project coordinator), so that he could introduce me to the community (and I was introduced as principal of course!). I took a few other volunteers along with me - Sally, Jenny & Nicki. I managed to fill 5 pages of my journal for the time in church alone so I'd better summarize a little bit. We are all glad we had the experience of attending the church service (all 4 hours of it), and it is definitely something I will never forget, but it was very emotionally disturbing, traumatic even. The church was really small & the floor was just regular gravel. ... read more

We arrived at Queen Elizabeth National Park (QENP) at 1 am on Friday June 29th. We had our first experience with exotic wildlife within a few minutes of entering the park. We found ourselves face to face with a family of elephants! During our stay we saw a number of hippos, waterbucks, bushbucks, warthogs, kobs and buffalos. Seeing that the goal of our project was to assess the general health and population dynamics of local predators, we also got to experience what it was like to work with such wonderful animals such as lions and hyenas. We managed to track a group of hyenas and we we even got the chance to collar a lioness. While the lioness was anesthetized, we performed a thorough physical examination on her which provided us with the most exciting ... read more

OK … I bet I have your attention, but yes, that’s right, earthquakes in Tanzania!! We have had, not one, but three earthquakes in the last four days. The first one, we didn’t feel, was on Thursday. The 2nd was on Saturday. I was napping on the couch, (I’ll tell you why in a minute), and woke up thinking that Anthony was shaking me awake. When I looked around, no one was there, but the couch was still shaking!! Honestly I thought I was just dreaming, but then Anthony said he felt it and John came from across the street and said he felt it too. We looked it up on the internet and it hit northwest of Arusha and measured 4.5 on the Richter Scale. Then today after we had gotten home from worship services ... read more
