Sooooo… we’ve just been to Zaaaaanzibaaaaaaaaaar… what a great name for a place. What a great place it is, too… Dad, Liam, Brigid and I got up early on Thursday morning to get to Mombasa airport in time for our flight. Unfortunately Precision Airways did not live up to its name that day and we waited in the airport for 5 hours before our plane finally departed. But the first glimpses of the island from the air were enough to make us forget the boredom of the day - the ocean in all colours of blue and green, white beaches and the buildings of Stone Town all looked very inviting. Got our visas in pretty much record time and found the driver from the place we were staying without any trouble, but then had another airport ... read more

by Mrs Plod I really wanted to get my blog up to date, so I sneaked into the study at about 7:15. About half way through the first enty, a little light started to sparkle in the middle of the page. Much to my dismay, I was experiencing the start of a migraine! I had already dealt with one 2 weeks ago, so I was not amused. Took my second (and final) sample pill. The aura continued, which made editing and typing a pain. Sandra convinced me to get off the computer and the headache came, possibly less than usual. We were destined for a drive around the Bay this morning, culminating in a much-anticipated high tea at 2:30 this afternoon. We stopped in Kalk bay, walked around the harbor, watched a couple of seals messing ... read more

Hello to ALL--well we've been here 9 days and I've seen a few interesting and unusual things along the roads and byways of Tripoli. The day after we arrived the driver, housboy and I were on the way back from my first shopping spree when I saw a camel sitting down in the back of a small lowbed pickup truck. I asked the "guys"" isn't that a bit unuaual for a camel to be laying/sitting in the back of a pickup truck?" They said no--he's probably going to be butchered and the meat sold--so I said--so you eat camel meat? They said yes and it's very good-that I should try it sometime---the houseboy said he use to work for some Americans from Oklahoma who loved the camel meat--okay enough said!! The major street that is one ... read more

Africa » Egypt » Sinai » Dahab July 18th 2007

Well after hitching a ride in the back of a truck for two hours, I arrived in Dahab, a quaint little town perched on the Red Sea Coast. West are the ominously stunning mountains of the Sinai, to the North is the small Jordanian border of Aqaba and directly East and just across the Gulf are the violently striking peaks of Saudi Arabia. A truly overwhelming panoramic view irrespective of which way you gaze. Dahab translates from Arabic to English as "Gold" and is reminiscent of what I imagine Ko Samui to have been before the massive tourist influx. It encompasses a smooth fusion of backpacker's mellowness and local's humorous and apathetic sales pitches, all set against a décor of craggy golden beaches under a rugged mountain backdrop and dark blue seas. Time could easily ... read more

Day 2, Nicole and I decided we were going to do a self-drive through the park while half the group went on their morning guided drive. We went and parked the car in line at 5am, bribed the gate guard to watch our car, then ran back to have breakfast and get our stuff together for the day. We were the second car through the gate when it opened at 6am, and third in line to pay. Britt, another girl in our group, caught up with us at the gate, and by then the line was about 100 people long. Again, we exerted the power of bribery on the gate attendant to secure Britt’s entrance into the park without standing in line. It’s amazing how much the term “money talks” really applies in this country. ... read more

Africa » South Africa July 17th 2007

In all my travels (because they’ve been so vast), I’ve found that one of the best ways to get your finger on the pulse of the indigenous culture is to really experience the food of the place. And often, the snack foods really clue you in to what people like wherever you are. First and foremost, I find it really important to mention that South Africans have a scary obsession with meat. All kinds of it, and in variant forms. Potato chips here come in flavors like smoked lamb, beef curry, and boerwors (a traditional South African sausage). I don’t think I’ve ever really experienced a meat flavored potato chip before, and I, one of the most carnivorous people you will meat (ha ha, get it? Meat? I’m so punny), am actually not a huge fan ... read more

We’ve arrived in Nairobi - just a very quick note to update you all really. We’ve decided to head straight off tomorrow for a 4 day Masai Mara trip because apparently the migration is just starting so we didn’t want to miss it. We leave tomorrow morning (Wednesday) and will be gone for 4 days / 3 nights before coming back to Nairobi and then the beach. Having fun and games with the internet connection - pictures taking forever! So sorry there’s not many. Will write more when we get back, with thousands of pics of Wildebeest for your viewing pleasure.... read more

I got up early this morning to attend to my poor little travel blog. Had a light breafast (good break after all the "full farm" mornings we've been having!) and showered up. We headed first to the Castle. Building of this fortress (rather than palace) began in 1666. It is a pentagon, with an extra triangle on each of its angles. Take a look on Google Earth! Had a great look-around. The military museum was excellent, and presented the military history of South Africa in a very fair and balanced way. We climbed up on 2 of the 5 bastions and took some pictures of the view. While we were up there, we noticed a "tablecloth" come rolling at a very fast pace over the Table. Sandra was not kidding when she says that weather ... read more

Africa » South Africa » Eastern Cape » Jeffreys Bay July 17th 2007

We arrived at Jeffrey's Bay, or JBay as it's affectionately known, in the late afternoon. Our accommodation at Dreamland was a beachside studio flat with a gorgeous seaview, right on Supertubes. We had been lucky to get a room as we arrived in the middle of the Billabong Pro Surf Championships and our flat was situated right next to the stands and judges at Supertubes. We were only staying that evening and left the next morning, so we didn't catch that much of the action, mainly surfers practising on the early morning waves. The town was rammed with surf stores and is great for snapping up surf gear bargains. It would have been nice to have stayed longer and hopefully seen more of the competition. ... read more
