25 October 2005 Hi Folks, Well - so much for me planning a quiet evening!! Life is never dull in Peru!! After updating my diary a few of us wandered into town for some supplies. They consisted of crepe paper, orange and black shiny paper (for Halloween decorations) and some finger paints. All for the grand total of 14 soles - the equivalent of two pounds 80p. On the way back, we decided to take a moto taxi as we felt a few splotches of rain and anticipated another thunderstorm (which didn´t materialise!). Have attached a photo for you. There were three of us (Vicki, Wendy and myself). Please believe me when I tell you that riding in one of these things is equivalent to a dodgem ride at the shows - thankfully without the bumps. ... read more

Puno - Lacul Titicaca 21-25.10.2005 Version française plus loin Salut, Suntem in ultima seara in Puno, pe malul lacului Titicaca, si am decis sa punem cateva poze si sa scriem cateva randuri inainte de a pleca spre Cusco.

Cusco On 19th October, I had just over a week to go in South America. I have to get to Santiago on the 29th, but still not been to Peru. I hadn't expected to spend so much time in Bolivia, but have no regrets. However, I did want to go and see the Inca capital of Cusco and the "Lost City" of Machu Picchu. I took the bus up from Copacabana. After a slightly farcical border crossing (it would have been easy to get into Peru without showing passport and then returned to Bolivia) we headed to Puno, then up to Cusco. We finally got to Cusco about midnight and I got a taxi into town with some other tourists I met on the bus. We got ripped off by the taxi driver (we later found ... read more

Heading back north towards Lima, we stopped at Pisco which is a small town near to the coast 4hours south of Lima. Arriving late at night because of the delay on our Nazca Lines flight (3hours) we found a nice Hostel that also arranged tours to the local attraction of Paracas. The following morning we were picked up at 7.30am and taken by minibus to the port of Paracas. From here we were taken by speedboat to a group of islands about 40 minutes off the coast that were home to hundreds and hundreds of sea lions, thousands of birds, and the odd Humboldt penguin or two. Lin was like a the cat that got the cream, and never stopped smiling the whole trip. I really enjoyed it too, but was glad that despite the warnings ... read more

Monday 24 Hola amigos!! Tuesday today. Almost here two and a half weeks. Can´t believe how quickly time is flying!! After I updated the diary last night I was stuck in the house for an hour or so due to another thunderstorm. The second in two days!! On Sunday I had a call from my aunt and uncle in the USA. Was chatting to them on the phone whilst the storm was raging outside, and all of a sudden the lights all went out (fairly regular occurrence with storms in Ayacucho). Thankfully Nico (one of the Peruvian staff in the house) provided me with a candle!! There were no blackouts yesterday thankfully!! Had a conversational Spanish lesson at 6pm. Was hilarious - he had us playing the equivalent of charades to learn the names of places ... read more

From Puno I went to the lovely gringo-filled city of Cusco. My introduction to the place wasn't the best because the bus broke down and was really late, the person that was meant to greet me from the hostel wasn't there and when i made my way to the hostel to get my room that i booked and paid for in Puno, i found that my room wasn't booked and paid for and the hostel had never heard of the person that organised it for me. I'd been swindled! The hotel was full so it meant a lot of wandering around, going to other hostels that were also full, late at night trying to find some place to stay. The problem was finally solved after a couple of hours, and I found a place and crashed, ... read more

South America » Peru » Arequipa October 24th 2005

After a few days in the desert near Ica we headed east to Arequipa (alt. approx 2500m), the 2nd city in Peru. The city sits in the shadow of three volcanoes, the most prominent being El Misti. With a fantastic looking Plaza De Armas surrounded by cobbled streets and alleyways, it is a far nicer city than Lima, and has a much more cosmopolitan feel to it than anywhere in Peru we had been to date. We spent a bit of time sat drinking coffee (and beer!) on the restaurant balconies overlooking the Plaza - very nice, although we kept getting bothered by locals playing Simon and Garfunkel on the Pan Pipes. From Arequipa we made our way north over the Alitplato (high altidude pampa) to a town called Chivay (alt. approx 3700m), at the head ... read more

South America » Peru » Madre de Dios » Puerto Maldonado October 24th 2005

Here we are in Puerto Maldonado, the Jungle, Peru. It took us 33 hours to get from Cuzco where the air is cold and thin, to this place where we’re 200m above sea level and the humidity is at least 100 percent. The bus from Cuzco left at 3pm on Saturday and was supposed to take 27 hours. Mike had a comical lack of leg room. The lady sitting behind me was extremely drunk and also very upset and got in a shouting match with some guy trying to sell motivational pamphlets. She proceeded to sing out loud and wave her arms out the window pretty much the whole way. She hit us on the head several times while she was flailing, and was kicked off briefly but returned much to our chagrin. Also along for ... read more
