Catching our rearranged flight from Buenos Aires to Peru, we were looking forward to the Inca trail, but had seven days to kill before we had to meet at the Tucan tour Hotel in central Lima. Luckily arriving in Lima at midnight, the Incahaus Cooltural Hostel that we´d picked from the internet had space in their dorms. It was a brand new Hostel and quite plush based in the Miraflores (posh) district of Lima. We decided to head straight down the coast the next day and leave Lima until we returned for the trail. A Soyus bus took us to Ica (5,1/2 hours) , then a taxi driver suggested a nice Hostel in our first destination, Huacachina. Arriving at this oasis in the desert, the hostel was quite a big set up , and we were ... read more

20 October Hi Folks, No photos today - just blurb!! Day started with Wawa Wasi. Everyone was there again with the exception of Alberto. No sign of him all this week. Was strange today as the WW was run by a friend of Julia´s whilst she was cooking out back. Didn´t ask any questions - thought it best not to!! Today we made a mobile of butterflies. I had a huge sheet of cardboard and drew eight butterflies on it. Cut them out and the kids coloured them in (which they love). Once finished, I bent the wings back (to give the impression that they were flying) and strung them at all different lengths from a coat hanger to make a mobile. The kids thought it was great. Giovani and Elias did their usual today and ... read more

Hola amigos, como estas? (Spanish going quite well, on hour 4 of Spanish tapes which, worryingly, is an hour ahead of our tour guide who is supposed to look after us on the second half of the tour! Good incentive to keep at it or we will be going hungry and staying in dirt holes!) In both Equador and Peru they are mostly really friendly and always waving to us as we drive past in our big truck and some even offer to help us when we are lost in the cities. Also a lot of the hostel and hotels have live premiership and champions league so managing to keep up with most of the footie which is a bonus. Here´s the travel blurb: Went to visit two of the most important archeological sites in the ... read more

South America » Peru » Cusco » Cusco October 21st 2005

Cuzco has been our home for two weeks now, through thick and thin. It is a muy fantastico place. The colonial/Incan hybrid architecture is truly staggering, and the setting is epic. The Incans were marvellous stonemasons, especially considering that they worked with nothing more than what is essentially iron ore. Using such dubious tools, they produced stone walls with no gaps or mortar - each stone is fitted perfectly. Their walls posses a chaotic beauty because all the stones are of an irregular shape and size, with some having as many as 22 sides. And then the Spanish came and killed everyone and tore down the palaces to make their Cathedrals… which are pretty nice themselves if you like that sort of thing (they're really nice, actually, and inside there is lots of gold and gory ... read more

Have arrived in the city of Cusco. Sorry Buneos Aires you have been relagated to number two spot. Cusco is wonderful, filled with true Peruvian character. The colours are amazing! Have been on a bit of a shopping spree, bought a rather expensive potato but its a long story and the potato turns out to be a mirror with the most wonderful carvings around the side...hence the potato! The markets here are filled with great handmade products and I think we might be in trouble with baggage. Within one hour of landing we had purchased an additional bag for all the crafts we had yet to buy. Furthmore I´m in bead heaven which from past experiences can be deadly! Its difficult to stop buying them! We leave today for Hot Springs on a four hour train ... read more

... read more

Hi Everyone. Someone just told us it was Saturday...so I suppose most of you will read this on Monday...thanks for all the messages...it´s great to hear that we´ll be making you jealous again at the start of the working week :o) We can´t believe it´s almost three weeks gone. Today is our last day in Peru and we are off to Bolivia tomorrow (fingers x´d on the bus journey, 8 hours). So since we last spoke (!!), we´ve travelled across Peru to Puno. We decided to go ´First Class Travel´which was a tour company offering air con coaches (with Loo) and it was great...cos in eight hours we stopped off at loads of churches, Inca ruins and the odd tourist market. In particular we stopped at Andahuaylillas and visited the church of San Pedro. Steve was ... read more

We´ve had a few meetings with volunteer associations and ity turns out that it would be better heading for the rain forest as soon as possible in order to avoid most of the rainy season (and the mosquitos that come with it...). So we´ve planned to leave for Pucallpa (a town in the rain forest) next week. In the meantime we should go to Nazca to see the famous Nazca lines. "Only" 7 hours of bus trip away from Lima! ... read more

19 October 2005 Hi all, Had Wawa Wasi in the morning. We stayed in our own place today!! Had taken paper plates and wool and made faces with hair (from the wool) with the kids. They all made the faces to look like their mum´s (unlikely as the plates were all white - unless their mamas are all ´gringos´!!). In the afternoon we had a guest speaker from the University about coca leaves, and their history. It was really interesting. Coca has many good uses, but unfortunately is predominantly known as the source ingredient for cocaine. We learned a lot about cocaine!! It is produced, as well as the other (legal) products made from the coca leaves. It is used mainly by the peasants to stave off hunger and thirst, also used as a natural anaesthetic, ... read more

Day 1 We were picked up and loaded on a bus where we met the rest of the group trekking with us. All seemed very nice. There were the Canadians, 4 Germans, 2 Dutch, 5 Puerto-ricans and a guy from Uragauy ( who got very excited when he found out we were Australian because of the world cup play off and we have to play them next month) We stopped in a town to get some supplies ie water, walking poles, before we started our walk. then we began we first had to pass a check-point. This is because they have a set number (500) of people allowed on the trail at any time. You usually need to register in advance and give your passport details. We had done this a couple of months ago. However ... read more
