... read more

Hi Everyone. Someone just told us it was Saturday...so I suppose most of you will read this on Monday...thanks for all the messages...it´s great to hear that we´ll be making you jealous again at the start of the working week :o) We can´t believe it´s almost three weeks gone. Today is our last day in Peru and we are off to Bolivia tomorrow (fingers x´d on the bus journey, 8 hours). So since we last spoke (!!), we´ve travelled across Peru to Puno. We decided to go ´First Class Travel´which was a tour company offering air con coaches (with Loo) and it was great...cos in eight hours we stopped off at loads of churches, Inca ruins and the odd tourist market. In particular we stopped at Andahuaylillas and visited the church of San Pedro. Steve was ... read more

We´ve had a few meetings with volunteer associations and ity turns out that it would be better heading for the rain forest as soon as possible in order to avoid most of the rainy season (and the mosquitos that come with it...). So we´ve planned to leave for Pucallpa (a town in the rain forest) next week. In the meantime we should go to Nazca to see the famous Nazca lines. "Only" 7 hours of bus trip away from Lima! ... read more

19 October 2005 Hi all, Had Wawa Wasi in the morning. We stayed in our own place today!! Had taken paper plates and wool and made faces with hair (from the wool) with the kids. They all made the faces to look like their mum´s (unlikely as the plates were all white - unless their mamas are all ´gringos´!!). In the afternoon we had a guest speaker from the University about coca leaves, and their history. It was really interesting. Coca has many good uses, but unfortunately is predominantly known as the source ingredient for cocaine. We learned a lot about cocaine!! It is produced, as well as the other (legal) products made from the coca leaves. It is used mainly by the peasants to stave off hunger and thirst, also used as a natural anaesthetic, ... read more

Day 1 We were picked up and loaded on a bus where we met the rest of the group trekking with us. All seemed very nice. There were the Canadians, 4 Germans, 2 Dutch, 5 Puerto-ricans and a guy from Uragauy ( who got very excited when he found out we were Australian because of the world cup play off and we have to play them next month) We stopped in a town to get some supplies ie water, walking poles, before we started our walk. then we began we first had to pass a check-point. This is because they have a set number (500) of people allowed on the trail at any time. You usually need to register in advance and give your passport details. We had done this a couple of months ago. However ... read more

Tuesday 18 October, Hi Folks, Had a very interesting day today!! Was at Wawa Wasi in the morning. Still no sign of Alberto. Worried about him. Kids were all hyper and we went to visit the other Wawa Wasi where Eileen volunteers. Always good to see a friendly face!! Elias and Giovanni were fighting over toys with baby Rufina today. One of them (not sure which) bit her when they didn´t get their own way. When I caught them at it I gave them a rollicking and Elias then proceeded to kick me. Have a beautiful shiner on my shin to show for it!! But hey..........the joys of working with kids!!! I gave him a row and he was suitably subdued afterwards. Julia told me I should have grabbed him and twisted him by the ear ... read more

Nazca 17.10.2005 Version francaise plus loin.. Traseul Lima-Nazca-Arequipa Nazca ora 18:33 (Franta +7h, Romania +8h) dar cred c-ati invatat deja. Ola! ¿que tal? (Salut! Ce mai faci?) Sa stiti ca am primit si citit toate mesajele voastre. Multumim pentru incurajari si "descurajari" sugestii si viitoare reclamatii. :o)) Sutem la sarsitul sederii noastre in Nazca. Gazda s-a ocupt de toate rezervar... read more

Hola, Monday again, and the start of my second week. Slept late and almost missed breakfast. Went to Wawa Wasi where we were short of ninos. We only had Andrea (Julia´s daughter), baby Rufina and Karina for the first hour and a half. After that Ernesto and his sister Maria arrived and Elias and brother Giovani. They all made it in time for soup, which none of them would eat today for some reason. Ernesto arrived with a piece of bubble gum which his mama had given him for breakfast. He wouldn´t part with it. This morning we had a delivery of books at Cross Cultural Solutions, and I was able to choose one for my Wawa Wasi which was good. This is the type of thing that your donations to the charity pay for. The ... read more

Trekking in the Andes - 15/16 October Hello all, Survived my weekend trekking in the Andes. It was incredible!! We set out at 8am on Saturday morning in glorious sunshine in a fully loaded minibus (photo attached), and drove up to the first village (our starting point at 13,000 feet high) where we met the llamas. The llamas followed us for the trek and carried our rucksacks for us. I was happy to carry my own as I was travelling very light, but was strongly advised by Pancho (our Peruvian guide) to put my bag on the llama. I soon understood why!! We climbed 1,500 feet across 4.5 miles. It took the grand total of 6 hours (including a break for lunch). At home I would have completed that in 2-3 hours, but I totally underestimated ... read more
