Part 2 Julie and I survived yet another travel experience. We took a 15 hour bus ride from Lima to Chulucanas (while we were on the bus, there was apparently a ridiculously strong earthquake, but we didnt feel anything). We arrived without a scratch and miraculously fit our hundreds of pounds of luggage into two moto-taxies (which are motorcyles with a little two seater attached to the back) to arrive at our home for the next 9 months. The place is interesting. We each have our own room. The hallways however, dont have any ceilings, so if it rains, we get wet on the way to the bathroom. Oh and we have no running water after 9 pm, so we gotta brush our teeth and try to finish peeing before then. The toilet does work, but ... read more

Sunday 30 October Hi Folks, hope that you all had a nice relaxing weekend. Mine has been great so far. After updating my diary last night, I headed home to (yes - you geussed it!!) a freeing cold shower!! Guess I´d had my excitment for the weekend by moving to the bottom bunk, and a hot shower was just too much to hope for!! Slept like a log in my bottom bunk which was great. We headed out at 9am for our hike in the hills. Nigel and Alison (two of the volunteers) are great walkers and have really explored the Andes around Ayacucho. A crowd of 8 of us in total headed off for the trek. Was an absolutely scorching day and suncream was definitely needed. Think I´m developing a bit of a ´farmers´ tan ... read more

South America » Peru » Arequipa October 29th 2005

Arequipa is known as The White City, since many of the buildings were constructed using sillar, which is a white volcanic stone. They were holding regional elections when I arrived, which made the bus from Lima twice as crowded and twice as expensive. Voting is mandatory. They vote much like we do in the States, with simple ballots dropped into boxes at churches and schools. I found the climate warm and mild, and the people very down to earth. There are a few sights to see in Arequipa, one is the Santa Catalina Monastery and the other is a museum housing Juanita, the Ice Princess. She is a remarkably well-preserved mummy of a young girl sacrificed by the Incas around 500 years ago. Unfortunately you can´t photograph her; she is kept in a dark room under ... read more

I arrived in Cusco some eight odd days ago and am awaiting for the end of the month when I start the treck to Machu Piccu. I spent half of the second day looking for a cheap hostel after I had a bit of an augument with the owner of the one I was originaly staying in over the price of the room. When I was at the bus station he told me it was 15 sol a night, but when I got the taxi there suddenly it was 20 sol a night, but I wasn´t going to put up with that sort of nonsense, so after substantive investigations I moved 5 doors down the road and saved myself 7 sol a night. Actually, I am going to do something competely out of the ordinary and ... read more

Friday 28th -Manuela´s leaving night After updating the blog, Vicki and I went for a wander into town. Ayacucho is exceptionally busy at the moment. There is a big vote and the weekend which could result in a restructure of the regions across Peru. Ayacucho may join up with another two regions, which would be beneficial as there is less poverty in these regions and they may be able to help Ayacucho to an extent. The vote is on Sunday, and everyone must return to their place of birth to vote (kind of like the census in Israel that preceeded the birth of Jesus!). The people are fined if they do not vote. Tuesday of next week is also ´All Saints Day´ (a national holiday) and there is a local Ayacucho holiday on Wednesday. On Friday ... read more

Hola mes amigos - latest update for you all. Before I blurb, just want to say thanks for all your comments and e-mails. I´m averaging 6 e-mails per day. It´s nice to think that out of sight doesn´t mean out of mind!! Comments are good fun. My favourite (so far) is the one from Andrew re my driving - probably true too!! Thursday 27 October After updating the blog, Vicki and I went for a wander into town. I wanted to check the availability of Halloween decorations (planning a party at Wawa Wasi on Monday for them). There was plenty in the shops and markets, so will stock up at the weekend. En route to town, we spotted two local girls with the tiniest kitten - well you know what a sap I am - I ... read more

South America » Peru » Ucayali » Pucallpa October 27th 2005

After a very very long trip we've arrived in Pucallpa, one of the two main towns in the Peruvian part of the Amazonian rain forest. The trip was quite an experience. It started off with the sand desert around Lima. We then crossed the Cordillera Blanca, where we travelled up to almost 6000m (18000ft!!) and suffered from altitude sickness... Finally we headed deep into the jungle, where the "road" seemed to get constantly worse. Pucallpa is a lot different from Lima. Its very hot and dusty, but at the same time surrounded by loads of interesting flora. Poverty is also much more abundant here. Tomorrow (on Saturday), we'll take a boat up the river and meet with the community we'll be working with for the next 2 months. Although internet connections are surprisingly easy to find ... read more

Va pupam si va mai scriem peste 5-6 zile ... read more

Afternoon 26th October Hi Folks, No photos again today - just my blurb!! After updating my diary yesterday, I headed back to base for our lecture on the use of natural remedies in Ayacucho. Had a lukewarm shower (must be my turn for a cold one today) and was lounging on my top bunk afterwards (yet again with a book in my hand) when another storm started. This time it was hailstones like you have never seen (honestly - no exaggeration!!). The majority of the houses in Ayacucho have tin roofs, so the resulting sound was the equivalent of the Fyffes and Drums at the Edinburgh military tattoo!! Had I been able to record it, it could have been used to replace an orchestral percussion section!! Amazing!! Again, rivers in the street etc, but I was ... read more
