I (julie) recently just got back from my first 2 trips to the mountains. The 2 weeks that we were translating for the American doctors was pretty amazing for many reasons. One, because for the first time since i{ve been here i actually feel useful, like i have a purpose. The doctors that are here are absolutely unbelievable. One of the surgeons is rated in the top 10 best in the US! and the rest of them are all pretty incredible, but on my first trip to the mountains i went with 2 nurses and 2 doctors and i translated for them and for the patients. I also got to help give a talk teaching about prenatal care with the people from surrounding villages in the mountains who act as the midwives and things like ... read more

Tuesday 1 November 2005 - All Saints Day Hello all, Well, today is a national holiday in Peru to celebrate All Saints Day. My Wawa Wasi was off for the holiday, so decided to work at the children´s orphanage, in the nursery with the babies. More about that shortly. There was a procession in town today to celebrate two of the saints. One of our group is Roman Catholic and tells me that they don´t quite celebrate the saints (or icons) to this extent at home in the UK. I went to see the parade as I was very intrigued. There are lots of photos attached. The main aspect of the parade was the two big float type things (sorry I can´t be more poetic!!) with the photos of the saints atop them. Both white and ... read more

I’ve had an urge to go to the Amazon Jungle over the past several years, and I finally got there. It was everything I had imagined: hot, wet, dense, and teeming with strange and dangerous wildlife. Our introduction was provided by a very capable team, Laurel and Pico at the Picaflor Research Centre. Picaflor recently became an official “Concecion Conservacion” - a plot of semi-park land. It is a project in sustainable forest management and a venue for academic projects. Laurel and Pico are an Anglo-Peruvian couple, and they have a small boy named Piquito. Laurel is a PhD biologist and Pico is a lifelong forest resident/brazil nut harvester. We recommend Picaflor highly. The food was great. Being a “volunteer” at Picaflor includes three hours of work daily (in return for the quite cheap lodging). They ... read more

Hello again peeps who maybe interested in our travelling blog. Thanks for all the quality comments, all very amusing. Wish we were so funny on the blog but experincing amazing things can be a bit on the monotonous side!!! Here is some more travel blurb if you find time from your busy days on your computers at work or home, hope you all appreciate, especially when we try to get them to arrive for you Monday morning! Here is Becky´s fascinating and rather factual synopsis from our current travels or is it travails: Condor watching: Colca Canyon, Peru Got up and left Arequipa at 3am to do a long, and very cold drive (road was at 4900 metres) to Colca Canyon to see condors. Lots of people were getting alttitude sickness which boded well for the ... read more

Hola mes amigos!! Happy Halloween to you all!! Was thinking about the Halloween party I had last year. It was a great laugh!! Needless to say, no requirement for me to dress up this year!! Had our Halloween party at Wawa Wasi. Attached are various photos. The first is the halloween pumpkins I bought and filled up with sweets (exceptionally healthy things like choc raisins etc). They are lined up at the bottom of my (bottom) bunk. I think they look great!! Also attached is a (fairly dark) photo of the paper chains we made and the pumpkins lined up on the WW window sill, and a photo of the kids at breakfast. I also managed to take a photo of our amazing multi coloured tree frieze and the kids working on it. There´s also another ... read more

From Cusco (base camp for anyone going to Machu Pichu) I hopped back on the bus again and made my way to Arequipa. A nice little town which is base camp to anyone going to Colca Canon (the world's second deepest canon). I took an overnight tour of the Canon and the surrounding area and witnessed the condors flying around, strutting their stuff for the tourists. In Arequipa I visited the Convento de Santa Catalina which occupies a whole city block and is like a city within a city. It was built in the 16th century and housed 450 nuns that had limited contact with the outside world, until in 1970 when the convent was opened to the public. It made for some pretty photo's. After Arequipa I headed down to the town of Nazca to ... read more

Part 3... To give you a better picture of life in Chulucanas, we feel like perhaps we should describe the night time sounds here. As darkness settles in, the streets are alive with religious processions--people marching with huge floats and statues of Jesus. these processions are also accompanied by fireworks, except that theyre not so much pretty as just loud. we thought we were being bombed our first night here. then, around midnight the animal orgy begins. it usually starts with a donkey making the most ungodly sound weve ever heard, then at least 6 crazy barking dogs join the chorus, which is completed with the lovely cockadoodle doo of the rooster that lives nearby. (yeah, i thought roosters only made that noise in the morning, but its actually ALL through the night!) Oh and of ... read more
