Misti was a bit of a challenge, but but I knocked her off. The last 3 hours of walking was a bit of a strugle, when I suddenly developed a bit a stomach ache. Every few minutes I felt like I wanted to shoot something out from one end or the other, but could not work out which. So it was plod, plod, plod... stop, wait while my stomach calmed itself down....plod, plod, plod. I have never walked so slow in my life, but I made it to the top and forced a smile. Misti is a 5829 meter volcano at the back of Arequipa. It´s fairly high, and we started out at 3200 meters and climbed up to the camp at 4700 meters the first day. I have passed the last 6 weeks without droping much ... read more

Hello all!! Following on from yesterday, when I was rudely awakened at 2.30am and failed miserably in getting back to sleep, I was extremely grumpy this morning and almost ready to commit murder when the alarm went off!! Anyway - headed off to Wawa Wasi. Andrea was back today, back to full fitness and twice as boisterous!! Photo attached as evidence!! In the morning we played a little with the toys. I had gone equipped with some cardboard and sponges all prepared for some sponge painting. Had a fuller group today. Rufina and Karina were back and also Andrea. We were back to a full compliment of 8 kids again!! No news of the little girl in Marruja and Eileen´s WW - I understand she is in quarantine for 2 weeks at home. Please continue to ... read more

Hi Folks, Was up and ready as usual for Wawa Wasi this morning. Still have a rotten head cold and feeling kinda flat as a result. Frustrating thing is that I am never, ever sick!! It´s so annoying that I´ve now had two colds in the space of four and a half weeks!! Not sure whether it´s due to the travelling at the weekend (down to sea level and then back up to 9,000 feet), or whether I caught it at WW where the kids all have the sniffles!! Went to WW to discover that Andrea (Julia´s daughter) is in hospital with a very bad stomach, and one of Marruja and Eileen´s kids has hepatitis!! Here was I moaning about a cold!! Rufina and Karina were also missing - both sick too!! Seems to be that ... read more

South America » Peru » Puno » Lake Titicaca » Uros Island November 8th 2005

After a hearty lunch of Shepards Pie in the Irish bar (not quite local food , but heh) , we left Cuzco and headed to Puno on the shore of Lake Titicaca. From here we hooked up with SAS Travel and their tour of the lake. First was the Uros Islands, floating islands made of reeds. When they got a bit soggy, another 5 " of reeds were laid on top. Even the locals boats were made of reeds. Very primitive, although they did have solar panels for their electricity, a gift from the Peruvian government! From here our boat continued to Amantani Island. We were introduced to Olga who was to be our host for the night. Her house was made of bricks held together with mud and straw, although our accommodation seemed better than ... read more

South America » Peru » Ica » Ballestas Islands November 8th 2005

Hi Folks, Final update re the remainder of the weekend!! We stayed overnight in Paracas and got up early on Monday morning to take a trip to the Ballestas Islands, just of the coast of Paracas in the Pacific. We boarded a 25 person speed boat for the trip. The water was pretty choppy to say the least and the ride was a little rough. Caroline and I ended up absolutely soaked from the spray, but it was well worth it for what we saw. Key highlights were the penguins, the pelicans and the sea lions. I´ve never been so close to them in the wild and managed to get some great photos (well, I think they´re great!!). On the way back, a pelican flew in front of the bow of the boat and over the ... read more

South America » Peru » Ica » Nazca » Nazca Lines November 8th 2005

Sunday 6 November Hi Folks, Think I got my diary dates wrong for Friday and Saturday - sorry!! Anyway - here goes with the rest of my great weekend!! On Sunday morning I woke up early after a great night´s sleep to have breakfast with the others on the trip and then head off to see the amazing Nazca lines. Nazca appears to be spelt interchangeably in Peru with a ´Z´ and a ´C´. Not quite sure which is correct. Anyway, the Nazcas are an historic Peruvian culture which predated the Incas. They drew some amazing pictures in the desert area around Nazca which were only discovered in the current century. They are only visible from the air, and the Peruvians were totally unaware that they existed, so much so that they built the Pan American ... read more

Hi Folks, I have so much to update you on, I´ll need to split it into various instalments!! Friday 3 November On Friday night the group of 4 of us left with Pancho to head off on our trip to the coast. We took the overnight bus from Ayacucho to Chica, which was our first stopping point. The bus was incredible, full recliner seats and leg rests. Very comfortable - seats were almost as comfy as when I flew business class to Oz for work. The journey, however, wasn´t so great!! The first thing to comment on was the stars and the night sky from the bus window. The only other place I have seen the stars so clearly and beautifully was on a clear night up at Glenshee. That was no comparison to this though. ... read more

ok guys, brace yourselves, cause this is yet another long entry, but the weeks when the doctors were here were pretty action packed for me. i'm not sure where to start. i suppose my first self-esteem "charla," which is kinda like a seminar is as good a place as any. Julie and I planned this little skit to display to the women of the campo (the women who live out in the middle of nowhere and work the land) that they are not their husbands' slaves and that they have to start respecting themselves if they want their husbands to respect them. (there is a big problem here with machismo) Anyways, I was playing the wife and a peruvian friend of ours was playing my husband and we were performing in front of about 25 people. ... read more

It brings a smile to my face to inform you that I now feel happier after the dull time I spent in Ecuador pining and longing for Colombia. Peru has lifted my spirits easily, like a phoenix from the flames and tempered my ever-changing moods. I have triumphantly returned to the country I visited briefly last year. And I feel I now know it better this time, with improved Spanish, more native friends, more casual clothes (gone are the chunky fleeces and ubiquitous zip-off trousers with 27 different pockets) and I'm generally just a bit less green and wet behind the ears... But only a bit, mind you. Piura I took a bus from Vilcabamba in Ecuador to Piura in Northern Peru at an alternative border crossing to the usual one on the coast. And dear ... read more
