My bad luck with transport continued, no your not re-reading the Nazca entry. I left Nazca on the 1am Cruz Del Sur coach to Cusco, it departed nearer 2am. Woke up at 6am to find the coach had broken down somewhere on an Andean Mountain road and I’m also starting to feel the altitude. The locals decide to sit it out on the next bend in the road! I whipped out the GPS to find our location, to my disappointment distance traveled in the 4odd hours was 78miles! distance to go 185miles. shit. Replacement bus finally arrives at 11am, they then decide to torture me by playing videos of the latest and greatest Julio Iglesias wannabes for the next few hours. The views of the Andean mountains valleys and sheer drops did make up for some ... read more

After being picked up in our bus from our hotel, we set off to the beginning of the 42km trek along the Inca Trail to Machu Picchu. The bus trip was just over an hour. We picked up some stock of food and walking sticks from the local shops. Also we were told to buy some cocoa leaves, which when you mash them together and hold in the side of your mouth will give you enough protein to keep going (tastes horrible) and is supposedly used to make cocaine. Hi Folks, The new Volunteer (Susan) arrived at breakfast this morning. An older lady from Canada. I met her around 8am just after I had appeared from my room ready to go to work. She was very chatty and attempted a long conversation with me. Will need to explain to her that I just don´t do mornings and that it takes me at least an hour before I´m capable of civility!!! Back to work today and back to the orphanage. When I arrived this morning I had the feeling that I´d really missed the kids. Hadn´t seen them since Thursday last week as I´d been at the prison on Friday. We arrived to find the majority of them pretty much washed and dressed. One of the tiny little babies was crying in her cot. I immediately ... read more

Hello everyone, It´s Sunday again and I now have less than 2 weeks left in Ayacucho. I have very mixed feelings about it all. I´m really looking forward to travelling and then to seeing my mum and my family in America, but I´ll really miss Ayacucho and the friends I´ve made here. Wendy headed off today for a week of travelling on a pre booked tour. Will miss her this week. She has also lately taken to treating Vicki and I to pastries from one of the local shops which I´ll miss too!! My new roommate arrived this morning - not Theresa as I was expecting, but a lovely young American medical student called Caitlin. Theresa has also arrived, a lovely American lady from Colorado who was skiing only 2 days before she came here - ... read more

Back in town after a quite extraordinary week. Everything seems to be getting better and better. On Tuesday we took a boat to Panaillo, where we set up gallery for teaching the villagers basic hygiene rules and risks of infection. After that I gave an English lesson and Pierre tried to teach some history and geography. We then gave out chlorine to everybody so they could purify their water for a month or so. I also instructed the village treasurer how to fill in a basic account book so they can keep track of the community's money. That night I had another close encounter with local life forms. I was lying in bead and as I was falling asleep my eyes were getting used to he dark, and at one point I thought I saw a ... read more

November 24, 2005 (Cuzco, Peru) Sean: From Pisco we hopped in another Royal Class bus to head to Nazca to see the world famous Nazca Lines. These are mysterious figures etched into the brown desert by unknown ancient peoples for an unknown purpose. Curiously the only way to view them is from a high altitude so theories abound about their purpose - from deity worship to astronomical calculations to extra terrestrial communication. The town offers plenty of plane rides and all manner of ways to get you to see them (the touts were unrelenting again). We chose the more mundane route and took a bus to a lookout tower where you can get a view of a couple of the images from a height of about 100ft off the ground. They’re spread out over 500 square ... read more

I had been anticipating my arrival in Latin America for a number of years now. Always being intrigued, as a young scholar, by the rise and fall of the mighty Inka culture, among others. And the constant political and social unrest that has bickered the whole continent over the past century. With it's recent past being littered with so much fighting and guerilla warfare. I think we all know the latino's are very passionate people. It's that passion in it's varying forms I was also looking forward to seeing. The mad football fanatics, the salsa and tango enthusiasts. The colourful and vibrant architecture. Would 3 to 4 months, on the quickly noticeable gringo trail, with fairly poor spanish; be sufficient time to delve into the psyche, personalities and cultural diversities that are uniquely Latin American. Knowing ... read more

Hello all, Hope you´re managing to keep warm over there. Been checking out the UK weather reports and very glad to be where I am!! Vicki, Wendy and I decided to go for a wander around some of the parts of Ayacucho that we hadn´t seen yet. We decided to miss lunch at the house so we weren´t restricted for time. I went equipped with a bottle of water, a bottle of Inka Cola, two packets of Dorritos and some Peruvian chocolate to make sure I maintained my energy levels (my excuse and I´m sticking to it!!). We took a taxi to the Mirador in up in the hills. This is a tourist area with a large white cross. Some of the earlier photos of Ayacucho included in the blog were taken there. We headed down ... read more
