Hi Folks, Hope that you´re all enjoying the weekend!! In yesterday´s diary I mentioned some sort of ´incident´ last night. Not sure of all the details, but it must have been significant, because this morning, there was a message from the teenagers on the notice board in the dining room. Wasn´t signed, and not sure who wrote it, but it was a message of apology. Have taken a photo of it. All I can say is included in the comment witht the photo!! Vicki and Wendy felt much the same!! The majority of the teenagers have now either left permanently, or are away all next week on a trip. There will only be eight of us in the house next week, all like minded and relatively sane. I´m really looking forward to a week of peace ... read more

by tim Hi everyone we hope you are still well even though those of you in the UK are probably cold, never mind suckers. In Cusco our group was joined by three more people Chris( london) his wife Gigi (italian) and Gigi´s friend Ciara (italian). We flew to Puerto Maldanado in the Peruvian Amazon. A really neat 2hr canoe trip down the Tambopata river delivered us to our lodge. This was the part of the trip I had been dreading the most. I hate spiders, snakes, bugs that fly and anything that bites. Come to think of it I don´t like anything that might hurt me. All in all its fair to say the Amazon was´nt going to be a highlight. The first night there the guide suggested we take a night hike into the jungle. ... read more

Hi everyone, Wasn´t at the orphanage today. As it´s Friday, Vicki and I went to the prison to help take the kids out for the morning. Was the same routine as last time checking into the prison. Numerous security stamps and my passport was held until we were leaving. Vicki had Karina today (the little girl I had last week) and I had Daisy. Daisy is the eldest of the prison kids and is more commonly known as "Crazy Daisy", but she was great with me. We brought the kids back to the CCS house where Marisol had some DVDs for them to watch - Tom and Jerry etc. They started to get restless after a while, so we headed out to the local park. The only problem with the park is that there are lots ... read more

Hello everyone!! Well - what an exciting morning we had at the CCS house!! The youngsters had been out last night and had a very late night!! They had promised to help Marisol organise a party for the kids at the prison today. Needless to say the majority of them didn´t manage to get out of bed, and Marisol was left to organise the party with a limited number of helpers!! There was an incredible fuss this morning as one of the girls hadn´t made it home by the time we were ready to leave for work. The CCS staff were in a flap - obviously concerned for her safety. She arrived home just before 8.30am having kept us all late for our placements. I was really disappointed as this was one of the girls I ... read more

Buenos dias amigos!! Feliz dias de Santa Andrew!!! Hope that you all have a great day and make it to some good ceilidhs either tonight or this weekend!! Have decided that tonight is the night and I´m having my Irn Bru to celebrate my Scottishness!! After I updated my blog last night, I headed home and shared a beer with Vicki on the roof of the house over a quiet chat. Was a nice way to wind down after our visit to Los Gorriones. On that subject, I had an e-mail to the blog account today from a girl called Kate in Australia who read the blog and is happy to help. Always amazes me when I remember that the internet enables worldwide communication. Thanks for your e-mail Kate, I will be in touch. Was at ... read more

Our time in Ecuador was always going to be short as we had arranged to Volunteer with an organisation called Bruce Peru in Trujillo, Peru, from end of November for a month and so had to get a move on. So with bags packed we waved adios to Guayaquil and borded our bus to Peru. Fearful of a 16 hour bus journey to Trujillo, arriving at midnight and beginning our Voluntary placement with Bruce Peru the following day, we decided to break up the journey with a stopover in Mancora, a little surfy town a couple of hours across the border. We had heard horror stories about the border crossing with Peru but fortunately our experience was problem free. So with a hop, skip and a jump we were in Peru. After 10 hours on board ... read more

The North of Peru is described as the Egypt of S.Am as it houses many pre-Inca ruins and treasures. The best bit about this place is that many Gringos pass through it without stopping on their way to or from Ecuador so it still feels 'unspoilt'. I guess our experience here was majorly fuelled by our excellent time Volunteering with 'Bruce Peru' and the many wicked people we met, but we really like the city too. Compared to lots of South American cities, Trujillo has that compact, small town feel and locals are incredibly friendly and down to earth, which is not bad considering it is Peru´s second city (although a title disputed by Arequipa) The city is located not far from a seemingly endless stretch of desert. This meant of course, no rain which was ... read more

Hello everyone, Hope all is well with all of you. I´m only going to give you a very brief update on the orphanage today as my afternoon was (I feel) the most incredible I´ve spent here so far. Arrived at the orphanage fairly sharpish. Kids were in the process of being washed and dressed. Breakfast today was like stewed apples - smelled delicious. I managed to feed Jorge (my boy!) who is usually a pretty fussy eater, and also one other new wee boy whos name I haven´t quite come to grips with yet!! After breakfast I folded some nappies and, I think I may have been promoted!! I was allowed to change Jorge´s nappy!! They take the wet nappies off, squirt the tender parts with some luke warm water in a bottle, dry it off ... read more
