After a stinky 15 hour bus ride from Nazca we arrived in Gringolandia AKA Cuzco (the only seats left were the ones right by the toilet) We have been looking forward to getting back to the fresh mountain air and were greated at the bus station by a man who claimed he was from the hostel, and had been asked to pick us up by our new amigos Kerry and Scott. This basically meant we got a free ride to the Hostal and then got attacked with a full throttle sales pitch! It turned out that Scott and Kerry had booked some tours with this agent and mentioned we were turning up. Seeing as it is the low season business can be hard to come by they took the oppurtunity and pounced! We broke free after ... read more

We´ve been living amongst the Incas now for about 10 days here at the centre of their mighty empire. On Friday we will set off for the Manu Reserve - the deepest, darkest, steamiest, primevalest jungle we´ve been able to find in Peru. If this is the last blog you receive, assume we have been chewed to pieces by the mosquitos or perhaps pounced on by a man-eating anteater in the night. With luck, the trip could be as great as our visit to the Galapagos Islands. If nothing else, it´s jaw-clenchingly expensive, albeit nowhere near as expensive as the aforementioned Galapagos. After Manu, it´s off to Arequipa, then Puno, and onward to Bolivia. Meanwhile, some thoughts on the Incas: As everyone knows, they built their amazing mountain-top fortresses without the aid of the wheel. Gigantic ... read more

And so it was, after an unusual Christmas (in that we were away from our respective families and on the other side of the globe), that we were on the road again. The crossing to Peru was the first frontier of the journey after reaching South America, and WHAT a frontier it turned out to be! You can call me old-fashioned, but when I think "border" I think of a couple of buildings with lots of official looking types, some sort of no-man's land in between and some semblance of order. Was I ever in for a surprise! The border crossing at Agues Verdes is quite litterally a bridge, packed with people, goats, market stalls, you name it - and not one official border control at either end. What happens is that the bus stops in ... read more

Days 39-43 We caught an early morning flight to Lima. We'd heard really bad things about Lima, but it wasn't as bad as all the hype. Saying that, we didn't venture too far for fear of being robbed/stabbed/beaten/killed. We went for a little wander and chilled out in the hotel, watching a coupel of films. We went out for dinner and had a couple of drinks. The next day was much of the same. We went to a supermarket to get provisions for Christmas Day as everything would be closed. After filling our trolley with Pringles, sweeties, nuts and (very cheap) champers we headed back. In the evening we went to a more upmarket district called Mira Flores, with one of our pals from the group. Everything was closed as it was Christmas Eve, we eventually ... read more

If there was a place, in South America, that I wouldn´t class as Beautiful or interesting, it would be Tumbes! - me Yesterday morning I was in Cuenca in Southern Ecuador. Cuenca was a pleasant place, and I stayed a couple of days, I met a very nice couple from California and went for dinner and drinks with them (for some reason most of the people travelling in this part of South America are couples in their thirties). I made up my mind that I had to leave early in the morning to keep my options open when arriving in the next town, Machala. I couldn't find much information about this city on most of the usually travelling sites and thus I assumed that there wasn't much in the way of tourism there. Being quite ... read more

We'd heard about the gigantic sand dunes in Ica and how they were best explored by sand buggies and sand boards. This was too tantilising a suggestion so off we headed for Ica. We arrived late at night after another long bus journey from Huaraz and checked into the Princess Hotel. It was very quiet as most families were getting ready for Christmas at home and I think most fellow backpackers were either in Arequipa or Cuzco. But, it had a lovely pool as the sun shone all day so we made the most of it and topped up our tans while supping cold beer, as you can imagine, it was a hard couple of days...!! About 5km away is Huacachina, which locals refer to as the Oasis of South America. Oasis it maybe, but it ... read more

Day 39 We said our goodbyes to our chums in the group as we were leaving the majority of them while they did the Inca trail. We got on a train, headed for Machu Picchu. Once we arrived, we had a 2 hour tour around the beautiful Inca city which was really interesting. It was really peaceful there and fortunately the weather stayed dry. The clouds that hung over the mountains added to the atmosphere and made it more magical. We climbed up to a view point where we sat and looked over the whole of the city. It was really lovely. We then caught the train back to Cusco, grabbed some food and went to sleeps. ... read more

It is indeed the 21st of December, and Mike and I are madly packing up our apartment in Vancouver for our south American adventures to begin! Quite frankly, I'm feeling about done with this part of the adventure, I've scrubbed one too many disgusting appliances for my tastes and am totally anxious to be on our way. Leaving for Hawaii pretty damn quick here and then, I'll be back to Vancouver for a day to collect Mike and we're off!! Thank God. That's where it's at now, highly uninteresting.... read more
