Days 37 and 38 Leaving the jungle at another ungodly hour, we arrived back in Cusco at lunchtime. Had some lunch at NORTON RATs TAVERN and mooched around. In the evening we went out to a really funky bar. The next day was a day of culture! We visited Sascayhwaman, an inca-built temple. We climbed to the top and looked out over Cusco. We then visited Pisaq, another Inca place on the Sacred Valley. The view was spectacular. We had lunch there and walked around the markets. We bought a painting from a really cute deaf man and then headed to Ollantaytambo where we climbed a mountain and learned more about the Incas. ... read more

The end of the Inca Trail signalled the start of the last leg of this trip - from Cusco to Lima and then on to Cork via Madrid and Heathrow. After a busy few days on the Inca Trail we spent a leisurely morning in Cusco wandering around a few shops/markets, sorting out our laundry and relaxing in an internet cafe. We then met Kenny for lunch in Jacks, another ´gringo´haunt that served the biggest chocolate cake we´ve ever seen. Afterwards we enjoyed an all to brief ´people watch´ in the Plaza de Armas before our peace was interrupted by the obligatory gaggle of ´tat´ sellers where yet again a cap saying ´no gracious´ would have come in useful. Having extracated ourselves from this group we said our goodbyes to Kenny and headed back to the ... read more

Back in Cusco, having completed the Inca Trail without too much trauma - hurrah! The day before we started the trail we went to some other Inca ruins just outside Cusco, called Sacsayhuaman (pronounced Sexy Woman!!) - some more examples of the amazing stonework the Incas were famous for, and great views of Cusco too. Then off to small nearby town called Pisac where there are more Inca ruins in the surrounding hills - had a bit of a walk (practice for the Inca Trail) then down into the town to visit the markets. Had Empanadas for lunch from one of the stalls (recommended and made fresh!) - kind of like a cornish pasty but more bread than pastry. Cheese, tomato and onion on the inside - yum! And only 1 sol each (about 15p). Wandering ... read more

Day 35 and 36 Another early one and a flight later we were in Puerto Maldonado, the start of our jungle adventure. We were taken by (a rather rocky) motorised canoe deep into the Amazon Rainforest to a beautiful lodge. After lunch and a snooze in our own private hammocks, we crossed the river to Monkey Island. As its name suggests, it is an island where monkeys live!! We went for a hike through the jungle and were lucky enough to see several types of monkeys, including a cute mummy one with a baby on her back. Our guide had some bananas and called they came down from the trees so we got really close to them. The humidity in the jungle was pretty high so once we were back at the lodge we dived into ... read more

South America » Peru » Ancash » Huaraz December 18th 2005

After our emotional farewell in Trujillo we spent a whole night on board a rather plush bus (by Peruvian standards) which elevated us from sea level (0m) to Huaraz which is nestled in a valley of mountains at just over 3000m. The journey took nine hours, the bus itself was extremly comfortable. However the attendant didn´t quite have the knack of temperature control and for most of the journey it was like sitting in a sauna. So after a fitful nights rest we arrived at 6.ooam and found ourselves in a very misty and wet looking town. The temperature outside could be compared to an English winter, which was quite a shock after spending a month in the desert. The setting of the city, at the foot of the Cordillera Blanca, is spectacular. When the sky ... read more

Day 34 We arrived in Cusco at 14:30 after a 6 hour bus ride. We had the afternoon to ourselves so we walked around the beautiful town squares. The architechure is a strange mix over Inca style bases and foundations with colonial Spainish built on top. It's a really clean and friendly place. We were all pretty tired from the previous days and we had a few more early starts coming up so we had dinner and got an early night.... read more

South America » Peru » Ucayali » Pucallpa December 17th 2005

We spent our last day at ADRA today. Christmas is approaching and so is our departure date. We're still not sure if we should leave. We've got the fealing that we´ll never find another place like Pucallpa. It´s hard because we know Peru is full of unbelivable places, and there´s so much to see. On the other hand we want to get to know these places by settling down for a few months. Pierre and me have decided that we will stick with the next job we find for at least 3 months. We´ve met so many people here, and ADRA want us to stay but we still feel we should move on... This week we spent our last trip in Bethel. Our main purpose was to check why the chlorine plant wasn´t working (A piece ... read more

South America » Peru » Cusco » Inca Trail December 16th 2005

The long awaited start of the Inca Trail had finally arrived. We were met on the dot of 05.30 and a short walk later we joined the bus to take us to km82, the starting point of our trek. We stopped en route in Ollantaytambo for breakfast and had to fend off numerous people selling all manner of must have items for the trails (e.g. water, walking sticks, ponchos, coca leaves, coca sweets, etc). No sooner had we started walking than our guide, Victor, stopped for the first of what turned out to be numerous stops that morning. At each he provided some useful information followed by numerous repititions of said information. We soon learned that "in conclusion" was merely an indication that the half way point in the talk may have been reached. It was ... read more

South America » Peru » Lima December 15th 2005

So after the uneventful flight from North America to Lima, Peru (I guess I shouldn't be complaining) we welcomed the heat. With the airline flights and such, it worked out that Lima was a stop-over on our way to Bolivia. Lima was somewhat nicer than I expected - minus the insane driving there, that is. Actually, we got into a bit of an accident. A Peruvian family (that my family became friends with when they were down in Canada on vacation) picked us up from the airport. Allison, Alex, and I went in one of the two cars with the younger guy, which happened to be the car that would get into a small accident. So that was a nice little wake-up call (Welcome to Lima - *crash*). It was actually just a bump, and considering ... read more
