November 18, 2005 (Lima, Peru) Shannon: Greetings from Lima! Sean and I arrived here in Peru on Tuesday and we’ve spent the last 4 days exploring all that Lima has to offer. We are staying in the Miraflores district of the city, which is a somewhat “upscale” area that was probably once a separate city altogether but has since been swallowed up in the sprawl of Lima. The immediate thing that hit us upon arrival was the change in weather - it is so much cooler here than in Panama that it was disorienting at first. Whereas Panama was HOT (I think the Devil himself winters in Panama City), Lima in November is something more akin to a San Francisco spring. Cool breezes blow in off the Pacific coast and when the sun goes down we ... read more

Saturday 19 November Hello all, Had a nice longish lie today until around 8.30am. Headed into town in the morning (10am) to the Colliseo with Wendy, Vicki and Caroline to see a dancing dispay which was advertised from 9am to 3pm. Got there to discover that it wasn´t actually starting until 3pm!! Guess that means you can´t really rely on Peruvian adverts!! After that, Vicki, Caroline and I headed into town, where I managed to acquire a really funky pair of boots (photo attached). Mum - know that you will be horrified by them!! Guess they rank up there with my red patent loafers, tartan doc martins and the orange boots I bought just before I left!! I really like them. Might wear there for Christmas in America!! My roommate Caroline was due to leave on ... read more

After 10 days in the forest we're back again. We ve now joined an NGO (ADRA Peru) that sends engineers to indigenous communities. So during the next few weeks we´ll be travelling from village to village testing water, building wells and teaching English as well as basic hygene rules. Its gonna be tough because some of the communities live a day´s boat trip away from Pucallpa..... Last week we finally got to see the deep jungle with its gigantic ants, snakes and funny trees. We went as far as a lagune in the middle of nowhere, infested by 12ft crocodiles! Unfortuately they don´t come out in the day so we didnt get to see them. On sunday there was a football tournament between local tribes. We took part and were knocked out in the semi finals. ... read more

The first time I came to Puno I decieded that I did not want to see Los Uros. Aren´t they just a bunch of floating tourist shops, no? But this time however, I had a morning to kill before I caught a collectivo to the boader. So I thought I would drift out there and think of it as a trip to a museo, complete with actors. The fist Isla we visited was the most interesting as the "local" gave us the root of the weed they use to make the island from to eat. It didn´t really have any flavour. The locals themselves no longer eat the stuff either, they get all their food from Puno. Bascially the locals work on some sort of rotation- a few weeks on, a few weeks off, so the ... read more

Hello all, Had a great sleep last night - probably helped by a couple of beers and a pisco sour!! Like I´ve said before - purely medicinal and to help me sleep!! Woke up this morning and got ready pretty early. Had a few things to sort out for WW. Translated a couple of things I had done with them into Spanish (Ring a Ring of Roses and Round and Round the Garden) so that Julia can continue the rhymes with them. Also needed to purchase some oil (to soften up the playdough) and some washing up liquid (so Julia can continue to make bubbles for them). Also decided to give Julia one of the Scotland T shirts the guys in the office gave me before I left and a fleecy top that I had. There ... read more

Sun. I2th. Nov. PUNO. Hotel & town not up to our usual standard, but we are only here to do the islands on Lake Titicaca. We were bused down to the harbour where we boarded a launch with 20 other people. We went onto the top deck and had great views of the reeds. 3/4 hour later the launch berthed alongside the floating island, and as we jumped off you could feel the movement of the reeds on the water. Their teepees are made of reeds and the locals cook and carry on a normal life on this floating island. Even the canoe was constructed with reeds, and fools that we are, we trusted it to take us to the other Uros island. -- Brilliant! Back on the normal boat and a pleasant cruise to Tequili ... read more

Hi Folks, Hope that you all had a good laugh at the congo photos!! The local folks certainly did!! Wendy was telling us at lunch today that the student teacher in the school she volunteers at had been up in the balcony in the square. Guess the "Gringas" are infamous now!! Was at Wawa Wasi today and had a great day, although couldn´t get any reply at the door when I arrived. Could see the kids (Anna, Rufina and Andrea) were all in the garden. Karina also arrived as I stood there for maybe 10mins. Julia finally turned up - she had gone to the shops and left the kids unsupervised. Second time this has happened in the 6 weeks I´ve worked there. She often disappears off on an errand when I´m there. Wonder what she ... read more

Hi all, Wednesday today and halfway through my 6th week here. It´s really flying. Starting to feel pretty sad about saying cheerio to the Wawa Wasi ninos this Friday. I´ll really miss them lots, but know it´s time to move on. Figure I should try and experience as many projects as possible whilst here. Planning to work at the orphanage 4 days per week and go to the prison on Fridays. The women in the prison have their children locked up with them until the age of 3. CCS do a lot of work taking the kids out on Fridays for excursions, so plan to get involved in that. Forgot to mention that Pancho (the guide I was at Nasca with and who Vicki and I will be travelling with) was round at the house last ... read more
