... read more

Today we visited Sacsayhuaman, the mightiest fortress of the Inca. Predictably, however, noone has the faintest idea who built it, when, why, or any of those trivialities. But they do know that it was the site of the climax of the great rebellion of the double hard Inca himself, Manco. HAving besieged Cusco and its force of some 190 spaniards with a mere 100-200,000 warriors Manco had setabout burning the place, forcing the Spanishout of outlying regions and generally causing havoc. The headquarters of the Inca forces were in Sacsayhuaman, so the Spanish attacked it with 50 horsemen and a load of native auxilliaries. THe fortress features three massive tiers of rock walls surmounted by two (now missing) huge towers. It was almost impenetrable, and an attempt to force the main gate was foiled largely because ... read more

Well we´ve now been in Cusco for 3 & 1/2 days (and boy did it take a bit to get here...nearly 13 hrs to BA, then another 4.5 to lima and finally another hour to cusco) and have they been worth it! It is recommended that you come & adjust to the altitude here (3310m) before the trek. the first day we were fine, but woke in the middle of the night with a killer headache. the next was a bit hazy and by the third I was ok but Matt was still a little dodgy. today we are both good - thank god as tomorrow we start the trek on the Inka trail! Cusco itself is a gorgeous town. Kind of what I expected with cobbled stone streets and colonial buildings, pretty squares, etc, etc. ... read more

Finally, after a couple weeks of hard work on the applications, I was able to make it out to sightsee a bit. Set high in the mountains, Cusco really is a beautiful place, and a bit cleaner than other areas of Peru. One site is Santo Domingo Monastery/Convent. It was built by the Dominicans on top of the Inca´s most important temple. Inside, there are walls clearly built by the Incas in a style evident throughout Cusco, with intricately carved stones snuggly fit together. But most of it is built in a Spanish style. San Pedro Market is populated mostly by men and women from Cusco doing their daily shopping. You can find almost anything there - fruits, vegetables, baskets, dressmakers, tourist items, shampoo, and raw meat. This is the market which almost made a vegetarian ... read more

From Copacabana I caught the bus over the border to Puno. No dramas in immigration but our bus decided to break down on the other side of the border and we had to join another bus. Unfortunately, they miscalculated the numbers and, me being the last person, I was left without a seat. Inventive souls those Peruvians, solved this problem by puttiing a wooden kids seat in the isle, right at the front. This gained a lot of laughter and, once again, I became the subject of many photo's. The following morning I went to visit the floating reed islands of Puno. The 'Uros' people of Lake Titicaca live on these islands formed from compacted beds of totora reeds that are constantly topped up. It's a rather odd experience walking on the islands because the reeds ... read more

Hello all, No photos with this update - just blurb!! Was at Wawa Wasi yesterday and today. We had a visit from another Wawa Wasi yesterday which was good - 16 kids in total!! Bought wool yesterday (yes mum - I know you never thought you´d hear me say that!!) and started making pom poms to help them learn their colours. Have attached them to elastic so they can play with them too. I made a frieze for them today to colour in. It was day and night in the mountains. One half of it had the sun with his hat on over the Andes (also taught them the song "The Sun Has Got His Hat On") and the other half had the moon over the Andes with Twinkling Stars (yes - you´ve got it - ... read more

Had a 14 hour drive the next day into Peru. In that time the landscape changes so much - from being able to see the volcano in all its glory, snow capped and smoking, amongst verdant montains, then to wend our way down massive valleys where the clouds were below us, to humid plantations of bananas for miles upon miles, through the Peruvian border control (lots of officials in a hut) and then into Peru where we immediately came to a coastal desert with nothing but scrub as far as the eye could see, lit up to pink and red by the sunset. We are staying for three days on the beach, near to a town called Mancora. It is absolutely scorchio and I got absolutely burnt, UK tourist style today. Tomorrow we have an early ... read more

(Russ - that title is for you...) Hi Guys, So we{ve just finished our trek and we are back in Cusco for a relaxing day. Just booked a trip to Puno and Lake Titicaca for tomorrow on a nice air conditioned bus.. Just a quick reminder that if you get a chance can you leave some comments...it{s suprisingly nice to log in a see them. If you are not a signed up member of travelblog then we have to see/accept them first...which is why you may not see your entries straight away.... So...it turns out that we couldn{t book on the Inca trail before we left, as it{s limited to 500 people per day and therefore sold out. So, we found another route to Machupicchu - called the Salkantay pass. Not doing any proper research, I ... read more
