Today we picked up another hire car and all of us made our way into Auckland for the day. Our first stop was Mount Eden where we had a great view of the Auckland Skyline. We made our way into the city and went to the Waterfront for Lunch where we met up with Fern again before going our separate ways. Rhys had booked to do the Auckland Bridge Bungee, but as you had to pay $20 each to spectate, only Jan and Den went along which was a shame as it would have been good to watch. I did think about doing the bridge walk, but wasn't too sure, I wanted to go up the Sky Tower as I'd toyed with the idea of doing the 360 walk (I don't know why as I hate ... read more

We disembarked from our home for the last 41 days - the good old ms Oosterdam and I still feel the roll of the sea beneath my feet although I'm on very solid (well, as solid as things can be in this highly seismically active country!). We're spending the night at the Novotel at the airport because of our very early Qantas flight out tomorrow to take us back to Alice Springs, Australia and our camping trip to Uluru (Ayers Rock), Kata Tjuta (the Olgas) and Kings Canyon and then two days exploring the outback around Alice Springs. But today we were in Auckland after our disembarkation and spent the day at an underwater aquarium which had lots of penguins - King and Gentoo - some on eggs which are just about ready to hatch out. ... read more

I haven't sat down for a month to write because I've been so busy. Was I out exploring and sightseeing? Nah. Five words. Orange is the new black. I figured if I moved to a different country I'd be bitten by the travel bug and I'd wanna get amongst it all and go on adventures, the truth is, if God wanted us to get out and see the world he wouldn't have invented Netflix, Dexter or True Blood. One thing I do love about this country is the food, most things I've done so far has revolved around my stomach. We went to a night market; a celebration of all things delicious. Every stall was a different country's dish and it all looked spectacular. I went to a stall selling "elephant's ears" and once I'd gotten ... read more

Last week I met one of New Zealand’s most fabulous socialites. I’m attracted to fabulous people like a moth to a flame, so when my friend told me this lady had arrived to her 30th last year in a helicopter I was in love. So that’s how I came to be in this situation, sitting in a bar that’s way out of my league; let’s just say it’s no Wetherspoons. In England I made it my mission to learn every bar price list so I knew exactly what to ask for, anything under £3 was my drink of choice. So when the waitress comes over and fills our glasses with a fancy jug full of iced water with lemon I know this is the kind of place that isn’t going to tolerate, “got any offers on?” ... read more

I'm reading about all of the lovely weather back home while I can't walk out the house without the wind turning my mane into Tina Turner circa 1980. I feel like I should be singing Proud Mary all the way down to the shops. I guess its a good thing though because while they're all snap chatting me with their bikini bodies and ice lolly poses, I'm thinking forward to November when they're all tucked up with a hot water bottles. I'm gunna absolutely bombard them with the sunniest, beachiest photos I can possibly take and I won't feel one ounce of guilt, "Oh its torrential rain is it? Here's a photo of me eating a pig off a barbeque". My time will come! So how have I been filling my days? Well let me tell ... read more

Let me start by saying, this blog website just asked me what continent I was on. I did not know. That's the extent of the research I have done on a country that I now live in. I'm sat here, sipping at my New Zealand Earl Grey tea wishing it was Yorkshire. The description on the box says "delicate hints of orange blossom" unfortunately my taste buds are accustomed to beans on toast with a pint of Strongbow on the side so I can't taste the orange. I'll be pouring it out down the sink soon enough I should think. One thing the brochures forget to tell you is how deathly freezing it is. I'm not talking, "oo its a bit nippy out there, better stick a cardi on" I'm talking not being able to type ... read more
