Had a great surprise today! My friends Jeff and Amy who got married this summer are in Auckland and they picked me up from the airport. Was great to see familiar faces again. Christchurch is the most depressing place I've ever been in my life. There are buildings still half destroyed, a crazy amount of construction going on, nobody in the whole city was smiling. I walked around for about 3 hours and had to go inside because I couldn't handle it anymore. Can't even imagine what it was like right after the earthquake. Not much positive to report. It's my last night abroad. I can't believe how fast this trip has gone by. It's mind blowing to think about all the things I've done, places I've seen and people I've met on my trip. I've ... read more

Kia Ora! It's been a crazy couple days. Having so much fun in Tasmania, saying bye to the people I met there, leaving Australia after being there for 10 weeks, the excitement of coming to New Zealand. It's been quite the roller coaster ride, but here I am in Auckland. It's not the capital of NZ (Wellington is), but it's the biggest city. I'm only 4 hours behind Calgary now. Well, I guess technically 20 hours ahead. NZ only has one time zone, so it'll be the same for the rest of my trip. Today I climbed Mount Eden, the biggest hill in Auckland. It actually felt like I was in the shire of lord of the rings. Lots of green, grassy hills. The lookout was pretty nice. I'll attach some pictures. Tomorrow I'm starting my ... read more

After much needed rest and recuperation at our friend's house in Birkenhead following our cycle ride around Northlands, we commenced the second leg of our New Zealand cycle journey, this time from Auckland to Wellington. Setting off on a fine winter's day we took the ferry to the Central Business District from where we headed east along the northern coast line witnessing what appeared to be the whole of the city out running, cycling or walking their dogs. It was fascinating cycling through the affluent neighbourhoods and I wondered how many of the properties belonged to Kiwis. Recent news coverage has spoken of the number of Auckland apartments and houses being bought up by foreign investors for investment purposes and it appears to be ruffling some feathers. As we started heading inland we were quite surprised ... read more

Back for round 3! The time has come for me to update this cyber diary of mine - apologies to anybody that was counting on more regular updates (I'm not sure such people actually exist - aside from my parents). Since I last checked in, much has happened. After a week of work in Nelson, my coworker Khat and I stayed the weekend at a backpackers lodge (the common term for a hostel in these parts) at a much lower cost than we would pay at a hotel. While the rate was great ($35/night) you definitely get what you pay for. Two nights of tossing around on a paper-thin twin bed and using community showers/bathrooms had me ready to return to the comforts of my apartment in Auckland. Aside from my diva-esque lodging struggle, the weekend ... read more

Hi All, We woke up nice and early and headed out for a quick breakfast before heading down to the ferry terminal to pick up the airport shuttle. (If you have used the naked bus you can get the airport shuttle for free if you show your number!! Saves you $16!!) Once there the bus quickly arrived and we were heading to the airport. The drop off is right outside the departures gate; after talking to the guide office we then had to pick up our campervan, we took had get a free bus to the Britz office about 10 min’s drive away. Right let me start, people who book up a campervan with STA travel, this is what they don’t tell you!! · You have to pay either $7500 dollars deposit or a daily fee ... read more

Hi All, We woke up and Eduardo and Susane had left for work so we had a lie in, we then went into the city early after getting breakfast in Onehunga, The bus took about 30 minutes even though it’s only about 15km from the city (Bus 302-304-305 are buses to the city from here). We got off the bus at the civic theatre where we followed some of the Lonely Planet recommendations including Auckland Art Gallery (we were not impressed as all the exhibits in there were just weird, some Billy apple….what are people thinking); we strolled through the Albert park, which was close to the Auckland University; we then passed the Old government house and the clock tower. We walked up the high street and got to the harbour area where the ferry terminal ... read more

Hi All, We woke in the morning, it seemed so early, probably because it was still dark outside. Jade’s car had trouble starting for about 20 minutes, her security lock on the car keys was malfunctioning, so Neil took it apart but it still wouldn’t work. When we decided to take the train we all got out of the car, at which point she said lets try the button one more time and it thankfully worked. I think it must also have a sensor on it…. We still got to the airport in plenty of time, but it did mean Jade was a little late for work (sorry Jade). We walked around the shops at Sydney aiport, but they were doing refurbishments so there were no clothes shops (disappointing). Our flight was delayed an hour too ... read more

I've never blogged before and at this moment don't intend to beyond this trip. However, due to the circumstances I am currently blessed to be facing it seems like a necessity. I won't pretend I am a good writer or able to provide any deep insights into the meaning of life. Rather, this cyber pit stop will serve to help my scatter brain try to keep track of my journey through New Zealand and my brief visit to Australia in July. This is also intended to keep all of you friends and family in the loop of the fun things I am getting to experience while I am here. I will be posting pictures that I deem post-worthy (NOTE TO READERS - all pictures are taken from my iPhone and will most likely be average in ... read more
