We touched down in Auckland at around 4am after a 13 hour flight. Our friend Scott who we both knew from primary and high school kindly offered to pick us up from the airport. It was dark when we got outside and the temperature was pretty mild, not what we were used to after three and a half months in South America. Scott took us back to his house in a neighbourhood called Mount Roskill which he shared with his lovely girlfriend Leanne and four other housemates. We hadn't slept a great deal so grabbed a few more hours sleep. At around 8am we woke up to birds singing and the sun shining - a good start to the day. Scott made us crumpets for breakfast and told us about some places he would like to ... read more

Let's start this blog with a spoiler: I got a car! Sorry couldn't restrain myself. So yesterday was an interesting day! Got up early in order to get some money out of the bank, and then we went to the car auction to get me a car! We arrived later than expected, so we didn't have time to check out all the cars. There were basically 3 that had enough space in the back for me to put my bike+backpack in and even potentially sleep in it in the price-range I was looking for (below 1500 dollars aka 900 euros). Bidding started and it was quite exciting to experience. They start at the high price, go lower until the first bidder, and then work up from there. The first few cars went over my budget quite ... read more

Alrighty then! So I'm starting a travelblog, so that I can keep both the people on facebook as well as the hardcore non-FBers informed...and I'm doing it in english because of the non-dutch part of the FB group :) So, where do I start? At the night before my flight on February the 28th, in which I skipped sleep on purpose, and only started packing at 1 AM because I'm me (and had to clean up a lot)? On the morning of the flight, where I started losing my sanity, and started getting stressed, because, you know, 6 hours to pack might not be enough when you consider the possibility of staying away for a year (max)? Maybe I can skip the goodbye from Schiphol, with some last minute niceness and me just being zenned-out all ... read more

Auckland The City of Sails and New Zealand's biggest city offered the welcome relief from the humidity of Cairns and a place to organise and plan our trip around New Zealand but not a huge amount else. Often called a "bit of a boring city with not much to do" even by a travel agent in STA travel (she was enthusiastic and obviously enjoyed her job), we spent a lazy few days trying to secure a campervan. After researching all the main companies like Jucy and Escape, all of which were overpriced and unavailable, we were forced to put all our hope in a leaflet for a company offering campervans at half the price of everyone else and that no one had ever heard of. After traipsing to the other end of town only to find ... read more

Today I decided to do the Coast to Coast walk. Now, I was a bit naive since I assumed that I would find food on the way so I only brought water. This was a terrible mistake since the track mostly run through parks and small communities, but with no stores or anything. I started out in the harbour and went up through many parks and up to one amazing viewpoint (as seen in the panorama picture). Besides not bringing any food I also had a map that doesn't show the full track and around where my map stopped the arrows did as well. So I wandered around hungry and tired in the sun for one extra hour before I found my way again as well as an Ice cream truck :D So I got myself ... read more

Bungy Jump day! Like yesterday I woke up around 6 in the morning and I spent the morning walking around in the harbour and try to not become to nervous. The jump wasn't scheduled until 1.30 so I had a lot of time strolling around. While at the harbour I found a sign about a Coast to Coast walk through Auckland so I decided that I would spend tomorrow doing that and have at least some kind of "hike". we Around 1 went to the pickup spot and met a Finnish guy who was also going to bungy jump and like me he was a bundle of nerves. His girlfriend were there as well, but she wasn't going to jump. They picked us up and we went to their office to sign papers agreeing that we won't ... read more

Since I sleept most of the day before I woke up at 6 and ready to take the world. After breakfast I went out to explore Auckland. Going up hill I soon started to wonder if I really was in the right country because every shop, resturant and so on were asian. Mainly Japanese or Korean and most sign where in does languages as well. (actually most people I met in Auckland were asian). Around lunch I got down to the harbour and found the I site (information site) where Department of Consvervation has their desk to see if they have an map over Lake Waikaramoana and if they new how I best got there. This is when I found out that the shuttle bus between Rotorua and Lake Waikaramoana only operates Sundays and Thursday, and ... read more

Hey Everyone, So I figured it was about time I wrote a blog to let everyone know what I have been up to for the past few months! Can't quite believe how long ago I left the UK. Well, where to start. Camp was great fun as ususal. The kids kept us all on our toes and I met some more great people. A few highlights/amusing moments: - Hiring an inflatable obstacle course for Chris's Birthday. Before the kids arrived we spent an evening as staff behaving like big kids, racing one another to the end with a bit of foul play thrown in, pushing, pulling and generally doing everything we could to ensure our opposition did not win! - Nerf War - yes, yet again acting like children and firing foam darts at one another ... read more

I hopped in a shuttle once I made it through customs in Auckland and made my way to my hotel, the Kiwi International Hotel. It was just after 7:00 am when I arrived and thankfully there was a room ready that I could check into. The five hour flight and losing two hours was not nearly enough sleep so I was ready to lay down for a bit. The only thing I scheduled for the day was renting a plane at Ardmore Airport with Auckland Aero Club at 2:00 that day. I woke up around 11:00, had a shower, and took off into the heart of the city. The Sky Tower is only a couple of blocks so I walked down and snapped a few photos before grabbing a bite to eat and heading back to ... read more
