Auckland was a city I’d always been recommended to see by people I’d met along my travels so I’d booked it in after my South-East Asia adventure had finished. I arrived one November mid-morning and hopped on a bus towards the city centre. I was staying in a Base hostel which had provided instructions of how to get their on their website. Turns out these weren’t needed as the driver was extremely helpful and advised everyone where they needed to get off for their respective hotels. The hostel was quite big and I was put on a quiet floor in a private room on the 9th floor. The lifts were a right pain I remember, as you needed to wait a while for everyone to get to their respective floors. And one of them was out ... read more

Sitting in my little cubicle I hear the refreshing banter of atmospheric noise return as the frustration of the last call slowly fades from memory. "Fuck that last guy, his internet would be fine if he would just, y'know, pay his bills. I can't wait to get out of here." Bleep. The ominous sound of another disgruntled customer who obviously doesn't understand the concept of "paying for service" or who thinks that they are calling the magical internet factory in the sky, calling through to me to fix his shit and make him feel all gushy inside is making gravity feel exceptionally weighty today. The headset which hard-wires his whiny voice directly into my brain isn't much of an incentive to work my mouth muscles into a smile either. "Yeah, g'day, I called in yestahday to ... read more

I've had the department dinner, then last night was my farewell after eighteen years and five months with my current employer - finally after working for 52 years the end is in sight with just four more working days then retirement officially begins. Flights are booked, passport still away getting a required Visa, a little thought has gone into the packing, and the excitement level just starting to climb. Roll on D Day (as in departure day) Thursday 3 April 2014... read more

25th February Auckland, New Zealand Today we lose some friends that we have made crossing from San Francisco to Auckland, thanks John and Heather for the laughs at trivia and the launderette (in joke). We arrived in Auckland quite early as this is a turnaround day, some 400 people leave to be replaced by who knows!! Our berth is in the heart of the city harbour so anybody not on an organised trip has no trouble finding their way into the shopping areas. A favourite for yachting, Auckland is known as the ‘City of Sails’ and has one third of the countries population. The city has become the biggest Polynesian city in the world; many of the residents are from the Polynesian areas of the South Pacific and latterly are from Asia giving Auckland ... read more

We landed in Auckland and it was 5:30am on the 31st December. With New Zealand being 16 hours ahead of Chile in time difference and having a 13 hour flight, we actually didn't even have a 30th December, that day just disappeared, weird! Off the plane we got through border control, grabbed our bags and headed for the luggage checking area. For some reason the sniffer dog and policeman came over to us, the officer asked us to both stand still while the dog smelt us, I was fine but the dog then sat down next to Freeman so we then got taken out of the que. A cameraman then came over and started filming us getting questioned by the officer. He asked us when we last had drugs saying it didnt matter if we'd had ... read more

AUCKLAND DAY 2 It’s amazing how the personality of a city can change so much from Saturday night to Sunday morning. I walked from my hotel to church at 7:45 am and the streets were calm and held not many people where last night they were crowded and lively. The weather was very nice and St. Patrick’s Cathedral was full and the people were welcoming. It was a beautiful, traditional style building and I felt very much “at home”. I didn’t get up early enough to have breakfast so I stopped at a Burger King on the way back to the hotel for a quick breakfast before packing and checking out from my hotel. Check out from The Quadrant Hotel was easy and the stay was OK but so overpriced ( because of the Lantern Festival? ... read more

AUCKLAND, NZ - GETTING THERE IS HALF THE FUN? Auckland is fun, and beautiful! The people are friendly, the pubs are great, but getting here is a pain - let me explain why more so in my case. I was scheduled to leave Sarasota, Fl on February 12 to Atlanta and on to Los Angeles, Sydney and then Auckland. February 12 became a nightmare for travelers through Atlanta. I got a message that my flight to Atlanta was cancelled. What to do? I certainly was not the only person impacted by this severe storm, but, since I had no insurance, I wanted to make sure I got to Auckland to start my cruise. After several attempts to talk with a person, I got lucky and got a flight from Tampa ( 50 miles away and leaving ... read more

Finally we bought a great van with a lot of space for camping stuff and people. It was a long way to regard the car as our bargain.......There is the story: Every Sunday there is the big car fair in Auckland. Christian and me went to the small car city market on Saturday. There were approximately 25 cars that were sold by backpackers or doggy men. As soon as we have entered the car market we were surrounded like a prey by a hunter. Everyone told as the same story: „My car is the best.“ „I will do the WOF and registration for you“ „I've have checked everything in the car and it should work“ „I give u a special offer“ If you don't know much about cars especially about cars in New Zealand it is ... read more
