Stray Travel -The Jill Pass I travelled on the North Island of New Zealand with the Stray Bus. I’m doing my internship in Auckland at the moment, and I wanted to travel the week before I started this internship. It was an amazing week. I expected it to be nice, but this week went beyond my expectations. I met so many nice people, I loved the spectacular views and I did things I thought I would never do, such as skydiving from 15.000 ft, horse riding (which I never did before), tubing in caves and so much more. Auckland to Raglan The bus departed from Auckland, near to the Stray shop in Fort Street. When I arrived at the bus (which was very easy to find due to his lovely orange color), I met my friendly ... read more

Well here we are in cloudy and rainy Auckland. Auckland you say - I thought you were going to South America on Holidays?? Great flight from Brisbane, landed safely in Auckland ready to transfer to LAN Chile flight to Santiago only to find that the it had been cancelled due to mechanical problems with the aircraft. Should we be worried??? Tranferred to a very pleasant hotel close to CBD to stay overnight, expecting to leave late this afternoon. Highlight of the day -- a walk in the rain to Auckland Harbour. Fingers crossed our next up date will be when we're in Santiago, Chile.... read more

Apologies for the delay since the last blog. There isn't as much internet access in a campervan surprisingly :-) We had an awesome last week in Japan, spent mostly in Kyoto. So glad we had so much time there. Absolutely beautiful gardens, lots of temple tramping and shrines in the wooded areas. Very pretty - shame I can't put the pictures up just yet. Hopefully soon. Met a lovely lady at the beautiful hostel we stayed at too, who bought us some cherry blossom tea on her trip to Shikoku - a flower in every cup! Will definitely miss the Japanese people, they made the trip much more relaxing and enjoyable just by being so friendly. We've been having a great time driving around New Zealand and both done really well considering we hadn't driven anywhere ... read more

So, so tired. I arrived in Auckland late last night and met some cool German guys on the flight, who I might hang out with while here in Auckland. We exchanged info and as soon as we parted ways, I was ready to eat. I was starving! As soon as I checked into my hotel, I went straight to the restaurants in search of lamb. Boy, did I find it! A yummy lamb shank courtesy of Restaurant No. 1. The meat fell off the bone and that was all I could ask for (this one was for you Marlaina)! On my way back to the hotel, I passed by a gelato place. If you know me, you know me and ice cream go hand in hand. I'm in search of the best ice cream spot in ... read more

Just a quick note to say I've arrived safely at my hostel in Auckland. I had an awesome night at the Holiday Inn at Sydney Airport last night. The novelty of being in a room on my own for the first night since I left Sri Lanka was pretty exciting for me! Plus there was a double bed, and a bath, and a TV! It probably doesn't seem like a big deal to you guys, but trust me, after two months being constantly surrounded my strangers it was nice to just drink tea and watch TV in bed! Plus having a landline telephone in my room meant I could receive some phone calls from home which was brilliant. I ordered room service and everything. Joy! I spent my last day in Sydney organising a few final ... read more

We are flying over the sunny Pacific Ocean as we write this last blog about our trip to New Zealand. Following our previous post we made our way to the Bay of Islands - a very beautiful playground for the rich about 3 hours north of Auckland, on the east coast. Starting as one of the earliest areas to be settled by Europeans in New Zealand, it is steeped in history and is currently the residence for artists, sailors and the very well-to-do. We pretended we fit right in by sipping our $5.00 coffees on the Strand, strolling through art galleries and joining a sailing charter for a day. With the hope to see the nocturnal, flightless kiwi bird in the wild, we re-visited the Kauri forest. We were able to hug a tree but the ... read more

Before we said our goodbyes to Gollum, we had a few more days in NZ. Stopping at Lake Tekapo – crystal clear blue lake with a massive Lord of the Rings like 360 degree view. Also stopped right next to Mount Cook – and walked to Tasmen Glacier where we saw icebergs!! Couple of days in Christchurch and Auckland before we said our goodbye to Gollum – Christchurch has been devastated by the Earthquake, with most of the Centre of the City completely cut off – buildings empty, houses ripped off coastal hills etc. The town is using cargo containers as a mini pop up town. Finished our NZ journey in Auckland; a really funky city – the views from the Sky Tower are great. In the pub at night group of local talent singing and ... read more

So flew into Auckland tired and hungover from Fiji, could easily be mistaken for England as it was raining and freezing cold so took us a while to re-aclimatize. First thing on the agenda was to go and buy some warm clothes as summer dresses and bikini's didnt really cut it, but as our hostel was located in the centre of the shopping district this wasnt a hard task. At the point in our journey we were missing the weather of fiji and 'fiji time' espesically, we wanted the sun to come out as the rain was very miserabe and we didnt want the whole of our time in Nz to be raining. Being the people we are, we arrived in Nz without any plan at all so spent the first few days in auckland deciding ... read more
