Hey everyone speaking so soon again after Fraser Island just 2 days later and it was time for us to set sail onto the Whitsundays. First of all before all that we had to stay a night at a hostel and we met up with a few others from the previous trip and had a few drinks with them!!!! Then it came the next day time to sail we first went to a meeting to get information and rom keys for the island we were staying on. After that we set off down to the little harbour with all the boats. This was where i decided it would actually be a good idea to hire a stinger suit so i didnt get stung by a box jellyfish which would not have been to fun at all. ... read more

There are small families that fill the bar. Young parents dancing with their small children to the funk or acoustic act that is playing that night. The bar is right on the beach with a huge deck and sloping hills that are free to sit on and enjoy a local brew. As if on cue, bongo drumming begins to sound in the distance at roughly the same time every night. There are a few guitars being played, either by someone sitting alone staring at the ocean, or someone surrounded by a group of listeners. The bar crowd is as diverse as the country itself - from the 60 year olds with grey hair, bronze sun kissed skin and dreds that reach the floor, to the young surfers, to the tourists, to the people in between. Entering ... read more

Hi, we are back again after having trouble with the travel diary system; we were logged out for over a week. Sorry to our loyal readers. When we last spoke we were in Coffs Harbour where we enjoyed a nice week of constant sunshine and beautiful places. Linda even hired a car and we went on a nice trip to the nearby towns of Sawtell (on the coast) and Bellingen and Dorrigo in what Aussies call, the Hinterland. We visited a Nature reserve near Dorrigo, which gave wonderful views out over the rainforests and mountain ranges that we had climbed to get there. Both of the towns were quiet, colonial style towns but very interesting nonetheless. The car hire worked in our favour in so much as we were able to use it the following morning ... read more

32 days and counting! I downloaded a desktop counter today and it tells me to the second how long we have to go till we fly away! A couple changes to our itinerary. We're no longer taking the train everywhere! From Amsterdam we now fly to Frankfurt and then instead of going to Bern & Zurich we're going to fly from Frankfurt to Prague!!!! I'm so excited about Prague! EVERYONE says it's beautiful there...and also cheap because they don't use the Euro. We're staying in Wenceslas Sqaure in a self-contained apartment for 4 nights. We'll probably just relax, maybe do a day tour or two, eat and drink lots because it's so cheap! Once our 4 nights are up we fly straight to Munich to meet Nat & Adam. So what's left to do? Well later ... read more

Arriving in Hervey Bay after a relativley short and painless bus trip it was 8pm-ish so we were only able to see it at night, but as with all the hostels up the coast there is always someone at the bus station to pick you up in their vans to take you to the hostel, another Koala's hostel. The hostel was pretty cool with a swimming pool, bar and relatively nice rooms. After a couple of minutes our 6 bed dorm room was filled by two canadian guys who were in the van. In my experience Candian people are always really cool and up for a laugh and Mike and Adam were no exception to this and we all got on really well right away. Friday was the Fraser Island briefing talk at 3pm. In the ... read more

"We have free surfing lessons leaving in about 10 minutes" I was told as I checked in after my 11 hour sleep free coach journey. "Great, I'll go" was my foolish and short sighted response. We arrived at the beach and I saw that my surfboard (it may actually have been an ironing board) was somewhat short and anorexic. Sure enough, when I eventually got on and started paddling out I found it almost impossible to get the board so that I could lie on it without having my nose and mouth underwater. Laying where the instructor told me to I had the front of the board underwater... when I moved back the tail of the board was deep in the water. All the confidence gained in Byron was lost in the space of 5 minutes. ... read more

I woke up in a bad mood because one of the guys came in to the room while i was sleeping, turned on the light for ages and didnt apologise! Then he started snoring..grr...not as bad as Skinny does though. I had to get up at 5:45am. We got on the bus at 6:45, along with people from Switzerland, Finland, Italy, Germany, and a couple other English. By this time we had said goodbye to Tom and Wendy had already left. We stopped up the road to sign in and there was a crazy homeless man stealing coffee and cursing at every thing! Breakfast was at Mittagong, and I had a massive roast in Australia's capital Canberra. We spent quite some time here, looking in side their parliament, we had a tour but I didnt really ... read more

Oceania » Australia » Queensland » Port Douglas April 11th 2006

Tuesday April 11th Today is our snorkeling trip to the Great Barrier Reef, one of the highlights of this trip. We decided to do this trip from Port Douglas rather than Cairns, as the tour operators up there are better, and more personalized with smaller groups. We head up at 7 am, with our boat leaving around 8:30. We didn’t get lost, which was nice, and arrive around 8 to meet the crew. There are 3 crew members a big croc wrestler guy, a girl named Natalie who’s a marine biologist, and another guy, our ships captain. So we’re off to the first of 3 snorkeling sites. The boat ride out takes approximately 2 hours and we’re pretty far out, barely seeing Australia. Wesley really likes Natalie, and talks to her a lot during the ride. ... read more
