4 May, Monday: After a late night packing the gear I left this morning about 7:45. On the trip up through central Victoria I used the full tank and two of the three spare cans of fuel. This will give me a range around 780 kilometres, which is well within my longest distance between service stations. It was a long days driving to the border town of Wentworth, which was reached around 5:00 that evening. Did 356 kilometres today was advised by the police at Wentworth not to take the Menindee Road due to recent rains. I booked into a caravan park called Willow Bend, which rests on the banks of the Darling River. Car went well but the weather is overcast. 5 May, Tuesday: The Silver City Highway is great. At Broken Hill I stayed ... read more

Hello World... Welcome to the first of my historical travel journals, and greetings from my home town Sydney. The date of this journal is the very day I boarded a flight to San Francisco for my first overseas trip, following an emotional farewell with family and friends. I had recently graduated from university, and was working two jobs while squirrelling money away in the bank to prepare for an extended trip overseas. Finally the big day arrived and it was time to pack up my troubles in the old kit bag, in preparation for a first ever overseas flight to discover the joys of world travel! A dear reader sent a kind message asking if there was a journal he could refer to that gives a background on myself and my philosophy of travel. I hope ... read more

Left Canberra with Ken and mum in the front seat. Peter was in the back, cracking corny jokes, and also little Peter Bondfield - who was never a dull moment. Then there was me. We arrived in Newcastle that evening then went strait to our hotel. Gradually all the relations arrived and the night ended with corny stories about our mum and dads past. Controlled of course by Auntie Nancy. Next day we went to the Parthenon milk bar in the morning then the wedding in the afternoon. The reception was without alcohol so Peter Meadows, Dwight and I slipped off to the pub for an hour. When we got back we had some funny looks but that didn’t matter because everything was fine. The night after the reception we went out to the R.S.L. ... read more

This is just a little diary that i wrote back in 1977 on my first big hitch-hiking trip, from brisbane to darwin. Tues 18th Jan 1977 The time had finally arrived. We were standing by the side of the road on the outskirts of Brisbane. My memory of the first few days is a little hazy because I’m writing a week latter. The reason I am writing this diary is probably to keep an on the spot account of the trip, which may seem interesting and amusing when read at a later time, maybe also because I have nothing else to do when Chris is keeping his diary. All I remember from the first day is Chris’ mixed feelings towards my using thumb instead of finger for hitching. He said finger is more comfortable and ... read more

Before we left home, my Grade 5 teacher back in Melbourne had given my parents a large pile of textbooks and several reams of school work exercises for me to complete, and I was supposed to spend a couple of hours every day while we were on the ship ploughing through all of this. I have absolutely no recollections whatsoever of doing any study at all. I'm sure my very diligent parents wouldn't have let me off the hook, so I suspect I've just wiped this unpleasant memory from my mind. I do however remember thinking as we got closer to home that this idyllic five month trip was nearly over, and that I would very soon have to return to the discipline and drudgery of school. I was looking forward to seeing my friends again ... read more

We arrived in Cairns after having visited Brisbane. Cairns, then a small city on the northeast coast of Queensland, had many interesting things going on. The group visited sugar cane farms out from the town. We saw sugar cane being harvested and then transported by narrow gauge railway to the mills. The sugar cane trains were called "trams", but were locomotive hauled, using steam or diesel engines with the cane on flatcars. Sugar cane was then and now a major agricultural industry in Queensland with much of the stock sold for export. Cains was also our base for a voyage out to the Great Barrier Reef and Green Island. Green Island is located some 17 miles off of Cairns. It is a small island and in the middle of the Great Barrier Reef. Our group of ... read more

Melbourne, Canberra, Sydney were the first stops in Australia on Valene's 1964 South Pacific trip. I'm afraid I have few memories of the large cities of Australia, aside from the Shrine of Remembrance (War Memorial) in Melbourne, a scenic overlook of Canberra and visit to the Australian parliament building there and Sydney with the Harbour Bridge and the Opera House, then under construction. In Sydney, we went on a sightseeing drive around the city and visited a local department store, David Jones. The local guide said the happening area of Sydney was the King’s Cross district. In Brisbane we met for a local orientation in a performance or dance pavilion. The local guide here expressed his disdain for rock music (a band was setting up to rehearse) and those who had imported Chevrolet Corvettes.... read more

In mid-1964, when I was nine years old, my parents took me out of school for five months and we travelled to Europe. I managed to keep a diary for the first part of the trip, but it seems that this eventually became a bit too much of a chore, and the diary entries run out after a few weeks. I've copied those that I did make in italics into the blog. My parents weren't really photographers, so photos of this epic journey are a bit scarce and limited to those taken by others, or my own efforts with a Kodak Box Brownie black and white camera - an icon in its day. Now that I've got some more time on my hands I thought it was worth trying to capture all of this into a ... read more
