Hey Chris - being a mechanic for cars and light commercials will get you a job in Perth but not on the mines - mines are only hiring heavy diesel mechanics with fly in fly out previous mine site experience so you would be unlikely to get a job there. The arrive in Perth and hit the mines thing stopped a couple of years ago when all the companies moved to previous mine experience staff only due to people thinking the $$ are great then discovering they dont like remote living or the heat. Plus the amount of Australian residents trying to get up to the mines is very high due to the $$ being offered so the companies have the luxury of choosing only those who have very specific skills and previous fly in fly out minesite experience.
I would suggest you probably wont have too much trouble in perth getting work as a mechanic...try having a look on seek.com or careerone.com or here http://www.apawa.com.au/ (automotive personnel recruitment). Good luck :-) Reply to this

Hey Perth is awesome, you will really like it there. I lived and worked in a country town about 4 hours east of Perth doing barwork. IT was a great way to save $$$ as your salary includes room and board. But they tend not to hire boys so much haha. The work that gets you the second visa is farmwork, fruitpicking and manual labour on the mines. They are really cracking down on people trying to fake these things to get their second visa. They will research into the farm you work on and ask you many questions so think hard before risking that.

Farm work might not be so bad and tons of backpackers do the fruitpicking thing. You just have to be prepared for not much money and lots of hardwork and working in the heat (and it gets freaking hot here) Hope this helps! Good luck!!! Reply to this
