Monday April 10th Oi from Oz! Nice relaxing day today in Cairns. Tomorrow we’re headed out to the Great Barrier Reef to do some snorkeling. Today we’re headed up to Port Douglas to see what that towns like. Just after Jason and I got up, we’re eating some toast we spot this huge bat. He lands in this tree right in front of us. We get out of the van, and go up. It’s a flying fox. It’s huge! Must be at least 3 feet across, and he’s looking at us, making sure we’re not going to do anything to him. It’s drizzling a little so we go back to the van and watch. Sure enough he leaves in a few minutes and we see him fly away. He’s huge! We all get ready and head ... read more

I got to Coogee beach early to get most of the sun i had left, and it was the best beach I had been to in Sydney. I had the classic Aussie fish - barramundi for lunch then had a walk up the hill, it was very scenic and a great place to ponder. When I got back I had to pack as it was my last day in Sydney, then we had dinner in a fairly posh restaurant between the harbour bridge and opera house. It was a nice way to end our time here.... read more

Oceania » Australia » South Australia » Kangaroo Island April 10th 2006

I decided to leave Anne and Steve's for a short while and go to Kangaroo Island on a two day camping tour. It was a very early 6:20am start when a small group of us left the city heading down the Fleurieu Peninsula to Cape Jervis, where we then boarded a ferry to take us to Kangaroo Island. The journey was very rocky, with one lady falling into everyone ahaha... On our arrival the weather just kept getting better and better which was wonderful as back in Adelaide it had been quite dreary. We drove to Seal Bay where you can walk down onto the beach with a guide to where all the Australian Sea Lions are. These ones spend three solid days in the sea hunting for food, then 3 solid days sleeping and resting ... read more

An odd thing happened in Sydney: me and Al got chatting to a couple, and on hearing the unmistakable Northern twang i asked where they were from...'Newcastle' was the reply. Its always a happy coincidence, there's not a lot of geordie travellers. Where in Newcastle? 'Jesmond'. This was a bit stranger. I asked if the girl knew the Peoples Theatre, and Jesmond Park East. Turns out, among lots of flabbergasted noises, that we lived just a couple of minutes away from each other, on either side of Armstrong Bridge. Not only that, but her mum had gone from living in Jesmond Park West, an extention of our road, and had married Charles Harrison, father of Jack, a childhood friend, and now lived in Melbury, literally round the corner! Weird. Lovely couple too. Anyway. We caught our ... read more

Well we managed to fit in a few days of surfing thanks to our buddy Mike. If you read this...Thanks Mike! Tenneal also managed to show me up by going Bungee Jumping. She was really scared, she got in the crane, went to the top and jumped off within the first 5 minures. I wouldive been up there for ages followed by the crane bringing me back down. Our last few days in Sufers, were spent...wait for it.....SuRfInG....I get a bit better every time. Thats what I tell myself anyways..:) We had a BBQ on our last night and we left Surfers the following morning with tears in our eyes. The tears dried as soon as we got here (Byron Bay). This place is awesome. We have registered for our open water dives. We are going ... read more

Not much to report really. I bought some Aboriginal art, a couple of photos and I played a lot of Digeridoos. They rock. Now I'm bracing myself for an 11 hr bus journey. Fun!... read more

Har ikke gjort saa utrolig mye siden jeg kom hit igjen egentlig. I've been told not to take my laptop with me by a number of people and the debate is still on the night before my departure for the coast. SO, I may or may not be updating my blog, also depending on internet cafes along the way. I have a problem with paying for internet now that I am tapping into the guy's next door. Point is, I leave tomorrow morning 6:45 sharp! Yahoo! A trip full of kayaking, surfing, biking, snorkelling, meeting friends (haha), eating, drinking, boozing, sleeping, rooting, hiking.... the list goes on. I'll take lots of pictues I promise; oh, and larry, I'm going to do a full Hungry Jacks section along with any good food I eat along the way. Just for you. Feel special. I'll be gone 3 weeks or so... ... read more

Airlie beach is the getaway to the Whitsundays...except drinking and buying souvenirs, not much to do around here!! The main street is about 1 km long and once you've done that, you've been pretty much everywhere in the city! :) There is also a lagoon just like in Cairns but the weather hasn't been good enough to swin in it. We sailed in the beautiful 65 foot sail boat DreamCatcher for two days two nights and that was quite an experience. There were 14 of us plus the skipper and host/decky who cooked us really good food!! We had vegetables dip every afternoon and pasta, salad, and the second night, we had steak and sausages!! It was just great! Best food i've had in weeks :) The first ngith was a bit rough....heaps of waves, but ... read more
