Oceania » Australia » South Australia » Robe April 20th 2006

This blog entry is about our stay in Robe, a Southern coastal town on the Limestone coast. You can find out more about Robe from Wikipedia At Robe we stayed in a house at Long beach called Southern tide. It rained a lot which meant we didn’t get out much - but we were very comfortable. The house had large windows so we could watch the storms come in and be entertained by the little blue wrens (soggy) that hopped around the garden. We did venture out a few times. On the first day we visited the Beacon Hill lookout to get a view across the lakes to Robe and the ocean. T... read more

Oceania » Australia April 20th 2006

In the last six months, I've spent countless Net hours on the 'information highway' reading the travel accounts of those who've been where I am going. Sifted through hundreds of travel sites and official country destination sites, all with glowing descriptions of 'absolute must sees!!' Looking for information which is specific to the needs of a woman travelling solo and independently. And of course having to make the inevitable itinerary changes when I hit speed bumps. Thank god for an ever-patient, much-travelled and knowledgable travel consultant. The latest glich involves the tourist visa for Costa Rica. Unlike the 90 day tourist visa a lot of other South American countries give, CR only give 30 days and must sight an exiting plane ticket within that time frame. I've planned to stay for 7 weeks, as there are ... read more

Having got this far across the world, we realised we had to hop across the pond to Oz. We spent a lovely few days in Sydney taking in the famous sights and catching with some old friends. Then we headed out to the Blue Mountains. The highlight of Simon's trip was travelling back on the new Air New Zealand plane (none other than a 777-200R, or so I am informed)! ... read more

Oceania » Australia » Queensland » Airlie Beach April 20th 2006

Well Arlie beach is basically the gateway to the Whitsundays and the great Barrier Reef, so pretty hectic and full of backpackers but we loved it here. Our accomodation was on a hill so great views of the reef from our windows. We booked a 3 day excursion on the Eureka 2. Its a Maxi sailing yacht that still races the Sydney to Hobart and various other races in the summer, but retires in the winter to the whitsundays for practice. We were promised 3 days of pure heaven, cruising the Barrier reef, snorkling and food cooked by al la carte chef. All this was true but they failed to mension that HARDCORE WHITE knuckle sailing was on the agenda and on the first day people were hurling over the back of the boat. We managed ... read more

Oceania » Australia » South Australia » Coober Pedy April 20th 2006

I can't believe I have now been to Coober Pedy. After so many months of wanting to go to this little town I now have! It had a quirky little atmosphere, with people's front doors being on the side of large rocks, leading you to an underground house...we did a tour in one of them and the temperature is just right, you can't hear any sound from outside, and it is completely pitch black with no lights, allowing you to sleep well at any time of the day. There are so many different nationalities living here, all in hope to pursue their dream of finding opals. (coober pedy is the world's capital for opals) I did a tiny bit of noodling, which is where you search in the heaps that they leave behind from mining, and ... read more

Oceania » Australia » South Australia » William Creek April 20th 2006

This town, in the middle of no where consisted of a pub/hotel and another house which does scenic flights, well using planes of course... This pub must have so many visitors, all leaving items like underwear, t-shirts, ID cards, photos scattered everywhere all up the walls, ceiling...there was writing everywhere from people all over the world. One guy had even stapled his credit card to the wall to leave his mark, which apparantly at the time hadn't even expired yet! I thought the guy who owns it must get lonely, but with the amount of people who travel the outback stop here...so he probably feels like he's travelled the world without leaving his little little, very little town...... read more
