Yes, we've finally left the Gold Coast and have officially started the big lap of Oz! We traveled to Tewantin yesterday (Sunshine Coast) and intend to stay here for a few days while we wait for a few accessories for the awning to be made locally. We made good time and the car coped really well over the Gateway Bridge. Fortunately we managed to lighten our load a fair bit during the time at Miami, finding out what we did and didn't need. We also discovered that the hotplate on the stove was shorting everything out when turned on, so that was replaced before we left. Some people we met at Miami have also checked into the same site as us, so we had a few drinks with dinner at the camp kitchen last night. We ... read more

I am officially done with class here at the Uni! Woo hoo! I am still waiting for about five assignment marks to make their way back to me, but I am so past caring. I am one day away from my best friend’s birthday (Ashley), one week away from my two final exams, and 10 days away from home. Wow the time is flying! When I last left off, we were partying it up in Buderim. This past week brought with nothing to exciting…except for Misha’s awesome birthday party at Laser Zone! About 20 of us rallied together and went to play three rounds of laser tag, it was so much fun! The girls absolutely trounced the boys in rounds two and three, and we all got beat by a family of six in the first ... read more

It is officially my last month in Oz...only 17 days to go, and I will be home :) Actually, I'm not sure whether to be happy or sad about this. Don't get me wrong, I'm stoked to come home, but even the thought of leaving makes me tear up a little bit. This week is my last week of classes, and I only have two assessments left. We're celebrating Misha's birthday on Thursday with laser tag, and then we might go paintballing with our lovely Saudi boys on Saturday. We just saw them this weekend at their new and beautiful house in Buderim. We celebrated the new digs with food, drinks, games, and a semi-working hot tub. It was a great time! Next week is study week, and I will be studying my butt off. I ... read more

After a really enjoyable spell in Byron Bay we were hoping for a repeat of happy times in Surfers Paradise which we had heard good things about. However, after arriving and walking along the main strip of town we decided that Surfer's was probably not for us. The street was littered with sky-scrapers each vying for their own perfect view of the beach. The population consisted of pretty much all tourists, attracted like moths to the bright lights. The second morning we got to really explore and whilst there was plenty to offer in terms of shopping, bars and colourful happenings it didn't have any sort of culture to back it up. The beach was enormous and at intervals the lifesavers were situated ready to rescue stranded tourists from the severe currents. It wasn't really surfing ... read more

My life has been pretty boring here lately, sorry to say it. I’ve been bogged down with assignments, and I have recently acquired a cold. Good times :) However, I did get a chance at some fun this past weekend when I went to the Australia Zoo on Sunday with Ashley, Katie, Rachel, and Neils (all Cobbers). We left Uni around 10 and didn’t get home till 5 or so, so it was a VERY long day. We hopped on a bus that took us the 30 minutes there, which wasn’t so bad. It was a very cloudy day—actually a bit chilly—which was perfect for walking around the huge zoo. We started with the Crocoseum, something that Steve Irwin built especially for his crocs. Steve Irwin, if you didn’t know, died, but his zoo and his ... read more

So we ended up staying at their girls place in the city for the rest of the weekend and next weekend. It was great to be able to shower and go pee and wash your hands whenever we wanted and use a fridge for food, finally we were able to get some CHEESE!!!! The entire week we spent looking for jobs, we had a few interviews and found a few jobs in the city. Byron found a job being a pedi-cab or rickshaw driver - haha! And I got a job with GreenPeace, which I had to turn down because we could not afford to live in the city and living out of our van in Brisbane didn’t seem like a great idea. So we headed up the Sunshine Coast to a town called Mooloolaba -- ... read more

Our good friend Jama (from England) headed home this past week, so we had a few different going away parties for him. The first came during hell week for me. I had three assessments due last week, and I did nothing but that. So the first going away party at the Hog’s Breath Café was quite non-eventful for me. We all headed out Thursday night (about 20 of us in the end I believe) and ate and drank for a few hours with Jama. We were quite the crew in the upper dining area of the place (it’s basically a bar and grill down by the Wharf). After his dinner, Des, Nikki, the other Nikki, and I headed back to UniCentral, where Des and I worked on assessments that were due on Friday until almost one ... read more

I’ll be quite honest with you. I had low expectations for my birthday. It started out sadly, as I woke up at 10 a.m. alone with no phone call from my parents (virtually impossible). I waffled around for a good half hour, but then got a phone call from Ashley, who proceeded to sing “Happy Birthday” to me in Spanish. After that, I got on Skype and “opened” my birthday present from Kory. He got me a horseback ride through the bush and onto the beach in Noosa with Ashley! It was probably one of the best gifts I’ve ever received. Shortly after that, I got another phone call from the front desk, telling me that I had MORE flowers! Pete, Amanda, Jake, Heidi, and Royce (my siblings, sibling-in-law, and sibling-in-law to be) had sent me ... read more

For reasons unbeknownst to me, I am finding it very hard to be here lately. I’m in Australia…this is a once in a lifetime chance and the only trip I will ever take here in my entire life. I need to make the most of it. SO, to help me do that, I am going to write an extensive list that contains (almost) everything I will miss about Australia when I get home. Please note that a lot of this list will consist of certain food items. I explore the world through my stomach. Anyone who knows me, knows this. 1. Double Coat Tim Tams 2. Woolworth’s and Cole’s brand food 3. Woolworth’s gummy bears 4. Isn’t it funny that my first 3 items are food? 5. 10 minute bus-rides to the oceans 6. Berto, Eddie, ... read more

Sydney is by far my favourite place in Australia (aside from the beach about 10 minutes from my apartment). After a four hour flight from Cairns, we arrived in Sydney in the afternoon to be met by weather that is reminiscent of a Minnesota autumn. The leaves are just starting to fall from the trees there, and you sometimes bake in the heat and other times need a sweatshirt. Wednesday, March 31st On our first afternoon in Sydney, we met all of our hostel-mates. One of the girls was from Germany, another from…Switzerland maybe? And the last was from Canada. We also had a boy roommate and he was German as well. Canada only stayed one night as she was on her way home the next day, so we had a European boy named Hugo take ... read more
