The week of preparation (continued). We've been walking along the beach for an hour and its a bit like being in an old toaster. Get the sun and its reflection on one side for 1/2 an hour and then turn around and toast the other side. Next on the list were bicycles. Hunted for second hand ones but nothing any good visible. So ended up at Maroochydore on Saturday at a bike discount shop. So bought 2 bikes, helmets, and a bike rack for the towbar. Don hasn't learned anything. While still struggling with the HTC touch phone, he goes and buys a new caravan radio which should play the iPod. Next day, Sunday, we rode the bikes to Perigian Beach and back. They went well. However, as the week progressed the weather has deteriorated, firstly ... read more

Well, we are making progress! We arrived from Auckland on Tuesday 22nd and took SunAir up to National Storage at Coolum, arrivng about noon. All according to plan. Then car wouldn't start! Both batteries down to about 4 volts. Wrestled the generator out, started it (hooray) and clipped to terminals. Left it for 15 mins and then tried car. No go. Gave it another period, still no go. Gave up and rang RACQ. Not bad for having been in Aust less than 1/2 a day. Much shaking of head (his) while he explained that car batteries do not like not being used and that one was definitely stuffed, and the other suspect as it was only taking a 6 or 7 amp charge. Bit the bullet and new battery. Tyres etc on both car and caravan ... read more

On Saturday we went out for breakfast and then dropped Sophie off at the supermarket. Whilst Sophie was doing the shopping Dad, Chris and I went to a garage and got the car battery replaced. We picked Sophie up and came back to the appartment to put the food in the fridge. After lunch, we went out to a fishing shop and bought a beacon to beacon and a new fishing reel. On the way back we stopped off at an aquarium and reptile shop which was cool. They had lots of blue tongue skinks there and some tiny baby bearded dragons. In the afternoon, we drove out to Manly West and went for a walk along the seafront. We then went to the park and played on the swings for a while which was brilliant ... read more

Panorama - Sunrise from Moffat Headland I can't believe that I've been out of travel action for 4 months! But then, I really haven't. I have been questioned, by my brother, numerous times, why I don't write about Australia. I've returned home twice now since venturing out 2 1/2 years ago. I suppose when I'm back home, it's like a rest stop for me or I hadn't considered my visit home as part of my travels. Although it was a bit of a waiting game before I returned to Europe, I decided to still look at each day through the eyes of a traveller and I marvelled at how beautiful my home can be. I ventured out each day like a tourist, with the bum bag or backpack. I looked at the sights with new eyes ... read more

Louise's Section This may be the first time we are actually writing the blog as we go rather than all on one day so bear with us if it seems we're leaping about a bit. Sunday: “errrm is this Surfers Paradise, it looks like Blackpool on steroids, but without the lights, shall we keep going?” answer from Chris “Yes!” Hope we haven't offended too many Aussies , but it's not as picturesque as we thought. Coolangatta was nicer, even with a cockroach infested bathroom and pool that had been closed owing to high electricity levels (if someone can explain this, please do, as electricity is surely bad in a swimming pool whatever the level!!). We hit Brisbane and after a stressed out drive in through the city centre we arrived at Lone Pine Koala Sanctuary. Chris ... read more

We cruised into Hervey Bay after a short stop in Bundaberg for lunch. The pool kept us entertained for the afternoon with Finn impressing us with his swimming. He is so confident in the water and is really a little fish. The following morning the boys were treated to a visit at M & K Model railway (seen on Burkes Backyard). The guy who ran it gave us a glimpse of what Jack would be like if he continues his train interest into his 60s. Interesting. It was however an excellent display with over 1000ft of track. The only problem was getting the kids to leave. A day trip out to Platypus Bay on a large boat rewarded us with spectacular views of the west coast of Fraser Island. The migrating southern Humpback Whales were amazing ... read more

AMAZING Experience Diving with Sharks at Underwater World today! Yes, that's right, SHARKS! From one who watches Shark Week on the Discovery Channel intensely, and has always thought how cool this would be - my dream has come true! Jodi and I decided to go for it after looking up Underwater World in Mooloolaba as something to do on a rainy day. Then we noticed the "Dive with Sharks" experience they advertised. We did the whole "would you?", "Yeah I would, would YOU?", "Are we REALLY going to do this?" and then decided we just couldn't wait and booked it!! So we headed to Underwater World Sunday morning, to see the rest of the exhibits before our afternoon scheduled dive. I don't know how much we really saw, since we were both a bit preoccupied that ... read more

BEACH DAY! Today we headed off to the Sunshine Coast - Mooloolaba Beach, and I learned why Aussies love the beach so much! The beach started out rocky, then as we walked along we got the white sandy area, where lots of people came out to enjoy the sun! They have a swimming area flagged off, based on the currents, and it's important for your own safety to stick to these areas! White sand, boardies and togs, sun was shining... now, just to get into the water. I don't know if anyone has ever been swimming with me in a lake, but as you know - I don't like it. I freak out at the very thought of sea weed, and I last about 5 minutes before I panic and claim that I'd rather just relax ... read more
