2 countries, 9 airplanes, 1 rental car, 1 helicopter, 5 hotels, 1 BIG (luxury) bus, and many adventures...but who is counting! We arrived in Darwin today (Thursday for us - Wednesday for you). We are staying at the Crown Plaza on the 20th floor. Great views of the ocean...coastal town...beautiful! Warm - 85 or so...not quite as hot as Ayers Rock but a bit more humid. The area reminds me of Florida. Tyler spent time in the pool - seems to love the water. Tomorrow (Friday) we are picked up @ 6:15 am for our 3 day camping trip. We won't be taking the computer with us...don't think we will have internet capabilities. The trip sounds like fun: Day 1 Darwin to Mary River (waterfalls of Litchfield National Park, birds and crocodiles for our river cruise); ... read more

1st March 2008 Today we had a leisurely start to the day and after a cup of tea in the hotel went out for some breakfast. We had booked to go on another trip to see crocodiles but only a half day trip that was not starting until midday. So after breakfast we strolled down to the beach in Darwin. In the heat and humidity you have to walk slowly otherwise you get soaked very quickly and can get dehydrated. It was a grey day but not raining at the beach so Dinah spent some time photographing the coloured stones on the beach. Most of the rocks around Darwin are made of sandstone but there are a variety of minerals that stain the sandstone. They are the most beautiful purples, reds, oranges and browns, just like ... read more

29th February 2008 We have decided to have rest day and so we didn't get up until 7.00 clock. We finished the diary for 28th feb and went to have some breakfast at a nice cafe we found last night. I finished off the photos for the log and we both decided to get our hair cut. Bob went off to load the blog and we met up after we were shorn. We have booked in to the Darwin Central for our last two nights in Darwin as it is much more central than our present hotel and was reccomended by Em. We couldn't get in there for our first two nights as it was booked out. There must have been something on for those nights. While we were waiting to check in we walked around ... read more

27th February 2008 Today we had to get up early to catch a coach (06-15) for a two day tour of the Kakadu National Park from Darwin. The National Park is very large the 2nd biggest in the world and covers an area the size of Wales but is also 2 hours drive from Darwin. So we spent a long time sitting on the coach to get here. It had been raining heavily in the night so once again some of the creeks were flooding across the road, which slowed us down, but as we were in a big coach so it didn't stop us. The first stop was breakfast at the Bark Hut, a very basic roadhouse which served coffee and homemade muffins. Then we went on to see aboriginal rock art at the Nourlangie ... read more

It's my second day in Darwin and I'm hiding inside to get away from the amazing heat and stickyness of the weather. After my post yesterday I went into town and found that the city centre isn't very pretty. There are three main streets and a few air conditioned shopping malls (bliss!) but not much to see unless you head right out to the harbour. Darwin was an important location for the fighting during World War II and there are lots of memorials to this and military museums around the city, but they're all nearer to the sea than I managed to venture yesterday. Despite my good intentions to have a proper look around, it's so immensely humid that it's just not possible to stay outside and walk around for very long! The people here are ... read more

I'm sticky. It's amazingly hot here in Darwin and more humid than I've ever experienced anywhere else - seriously tropical but seriously fab! I left Perth this morning (hurrah) and after an easy Qantas flight arrived here at 12.30. My hostel is lovely, with friendly staff, aircon in the bedrooms, nice showers, a big kitchen, a pool and free internet! I'm just about to brave the heat on the streets of the city to buy some breakfast things and have a little explore of the centre. It feels like my trip's finally begun at last.... read more

After a late flight I arrived in humid Darwin and caught the Airport Shuttle Bus to Frogs-Hollow Backpackers. Upon arrival a friendly guy from Amsterdam had a big chat to me about his travels through the countries that I am about to visit. I made my way to my dorm and was worried I would wake up those in there. I need not have worried, as the dorm was alive with the chatter of 8 friendly Indians who are up here to work for a month before heading back to university in Melbourne. We talked well into the morning before I finally crashed into bed after being awake for nearly 24 hours (had had an early start because I still had to pick up my Chinese Visa for the trip - on the day of departure ... read more

We have a bone to pick with John from STA travel. He led us into believing that Darwin would be a good place to visit. So far pretty much everything's been closed (shops, restaurants etc) so we've been killing time for a few days... The locals are extremely strange but luckily we got talking to a couple of normal people in a bar just before NY. One guy was a dj who we then went to see on New Years eve. The music was pretty good, good party atmosphere but we were glad to go and stand in the dj box and escape the sleazing men! Took a trip out to Litchfield National Park yesterday and stopped on the way to go on a jumping crocodile cruise. Was amazing to see the crocs jump out out ... read more

Arrived in Darwin just after midnight, this was due to a last minute change in the flight times. We were supposed to arrive at about 6.30am.... Our accommodation wasn't available till 8.30am. So we had to hang around the airport for 8 hours - Oh joy, no sleep this night!!! Thank goodness our rooms were ready when we finally arrived... Needless to say, we fell into bed and were asleep as soon as our heads hit the pillow. Much later..... After having checked out the well equiped kitchen, we went to the super market. A 10 minutes walk...... It took us 30 minutes in the blistering heat. Weren't we pleased to get there!!!! But now we had to do the walk back!!! Finally, we made it back. Retired to our (air con) room with a box ... read more

Darwin / Litchfield National Park / Katherine Gorge / Wolfe Creek (AARGH!) Firstly, apologies for the typos and spelling in the last entry (Alice Springs is not surrounded by a dessert because if it was an apple pie I would have eaten it on the way through! Its actually surrounded by a desert.) Typed it up in around 5mins due to the shockingly bad Internet connections over here! Note to self - proof read before publishing. Jumping Salt Water Crocodiles on the Adelaide River, South of Darwin The river looks like something out of Cape Fear, is extremely hot and absolutely plagued with flies. It was a relief when the boat was speeding up river as the flies weren't able to keep up. All of a sudden our lady tour guide would spot a ripple in ... read more
