Hello Everyone.. and Happy Thanksgiving by the way! Sorry for such a long period without e-mail or blog updates. I don't feel all that talkative lately anyway, as this middle section of the adventure has been emotionally challenging, tiring and the effects of being "in transit" for so long are starting to wear me down. Anyway, let me sum up August. I realized soon after making landfall in Cairns (Queensland, Australia) that I hadn't slept on land for 5 months, and that I rarely get to hang out with my cousin Liz, so I flew down to Sydney to visit her and her husband Jim for a week. What a fantastic time in such great company - it made me realize something which I'll touch on later when I talk about human interactions After flying back ... read more

If your wondering why I haven't made an entry in a while its because the computers here are S#@t. I've tried 3 different ones now and i can honestly say I've known dead people move faster than these things. Was thinking of getting a bit rock an roll earlier & smashing them up after the 5 attempt failed to upload my pictures. Sorry about the rant but after working in IT for the past 7 years i find it very frustrating. Rest assured when i can get on a PC that isn't running windows '1978 I'll put my entries in. Hope everyone is well. Back in 5 weeks. Calvin ... read more

We arrived at our hotel The Mantra Pandanas in Darwin, settled for a bit then headed out to the night markets, how exciting...lots of music, coloured lights and people everywhere! We happily wandered around the stalls selling lots of interesting things...crocodile teeth anyone? The following day we hopped on a bus and went to the Botanical Gardens which were beautiful, then onto the Darwin Museum...if you ever visit Darwin this place is a must, we deceided to go back there to have another wander though and celebrate our 39th Wedding Anniversary in their delightful Cafe' out front overlooking Fannie Bay. My Dad was stationed in Darwin during the WW2 so I had a special interest in our visit to the East Point Military Museum...certainly when we left, we had a better understanding of just what went ... read more

Hey everyone, I know it's been a while since I made an entry but I’ve been so busy with work right up to leaving the Malpass. I left on the 3rd of August on the bus up to Cairns. Spent a couple of days in the city, Did a sky dive on Monday morning a couple more bungy jumps in the afternoon. Hired a wicked van & set of Monday night to Darwin. The first stop was the Blue Healer, a pub on the highway that’s supposed to be pretty famous. Had a quick beer & signed the walls for prosperity. Next stop was McKinley which is home to the famous pub from the Crocodile Dundee films, "The Walkabout creek hotel", had heard about it ages ago and decided I had to pay it a visit. ... read more

After the luxury of Singapore Airport, we arrived bleary eyed in the far smaller, less attractive Darwin Airport. We then had to endure the rigorous security checks, which at 4am and with no sleep was rather aggravating. Eventually, we collected our bags and escaped customs with relatively few problems. We entered the main part of the airport and headed straight for the information desk where we were met with a moody Austalian woman weighing around 250lbs. Needless to say she was very unhelpful and told us that Darwin was likely to be busy and we would have trouble finding accomodation. However, she was nice enough to inform us that we should stay in the airport for a few hours since nothing in Darwin would be open yet! We waited around for a copuple of hours and ... read more

Sun 20th July Still very hot. The information we were working on indicated that today is the big day - the Darwin Beercan Regatta! However, a local brochure indicates that we have missed it - it was last week apparently. Not sure if we were looking at the wrong year, or just got bad information from somewhere. But it looks as if the whole trip to Oz is a waste of time... ;-) . Just in case the brochure is wrong, we decide to walk to Mindil Beach, which is the location of the Regatta. Sure enough, when we reach Mindil, there is no sign of anything going on. Still, we hand around on the beach for a while. Although it is a sandy beach, it seems to have large numbers of assorted types of crabs. ... read more

Arriving at Darwin International at 1am nearly two weeks ago, I slept for 5 hours on an airport couch and watched the red sunrise before taking a taxi into the city. Darwin is not at all what I expected. Despite being the 'capital' of the Northern Territory, the city centre is quite small and relatively low-rise. It was quiet to start with, but as the day progressed hundreds of backpackers crawled out of the shade and into the bars. I had become so used to the New Zealand winter that I didn't bother booking ahead but we're in the peak season here and I really had trouble finding a hostel. There was one point where I was considering sleeping in the park, but things worked out eventually. Upon finding long-term accommodation at a really laid back ... read more

Arrived in Darwin, looked around. Went to the Caravan Park and set up. Next day we relaxed at the caravan park, went into the pool. For tea we went to Stokes Wharf for Fish and Chips. Feed the fish that night - they were gigantic fish. Did not know what they were, except well fed fish. Went with Mum and Dad and looked around the shops for half a day and went to Mindil Beach market that night - and bought a didgeridoo. Relaxed the next day around the pool. Learnt about Cyclone Tracy at the Darwin Museum. Found out it was horrible to have lived through the experience. After that went to the Casino for lunch. I filled my stomach with yummy food and did not need to have tea that night. Finally go to ... read more

We finally got internet service in Darwin. I liked the Cyclone Tracy display at the Museum. There was a room that had sounds like Cyclone Tracy. It was very loud, dark and scary. In Darwin we had lots of swims in the pool at the caravan park. We went to see the WWII Tunnels that were built to store oil in, but were not finished until after the war ended and were never used. We got to walk inside 1 of them. It had lots of water running in the tunnel. It had photos of the bombing that Japan did to Darwin in WWII. One day, when the car got a snorkel put on, we walked to the Aircraft Museum - the home of the B52. There were lots of planes in there. The B52 took ... read more

Booked the car in (for Friday) at ARB for a snorkel as the air filter was getting dirty and we had lots of dirt roads to go. Got an 8 stage battery charger as we could not get enough charge into the camper battery, the car alternator is 80amp so we may look at increasing its size maybe with a Landcruiser alternator if it fits. At the moment the alternator is trying to run (i) the car battery; (ii) camper battery; (iii) camper fridge; (iv) battery pack. It’s just not coping. We will see how it goes. Saw East Point Reserve and Military Museum where Darwin set up to protect during WWII. The cost of the guns and in the end were sold to the Japanese for scrap metal for 20% of the price. Darwin was ... read more
