We made it to DARWIN!! 14 days in a bus... actually thats a bit of a lie. we made it to darwin 3 days ago in the evening but after a rather crazy night out left at 5 the next morning to go to kakadu national park for 3 days. So, after Alice Springs where we left about 6 in the morning, we drove up to the Devils Marbles, a weird rock formation where it appears to the eye that there are strange balls of stone, varying from 1 to maybe 5m in height, are sitting on the ground and on other rocks. its a very strange sight and quite hard to explain.. but after a scramble around on the rocks where aboriginals wont even go near incase the spirits kidnap them.. a quick stop for ... read more

Well, we arrived in Darwin about a week ago, did some of the touristy type things like a little bit of shopping in the mall though the mall wasn't overly impressing. It is very hot and dry here, I guess dry is better than humid, I'm sweating less! So we were very glad when we found the SAFE swimming places in Darwin, one is a wave pool that costs about $5 to get in, the waves start to get annoying after a while so we moved on to the 'lagoon' type beach It is a little like a marina and apparently is safe from sintgers and crocs as the water can't get in unless it goes through a filter, this was alot nicer to swim in, pool water seems very cold here but the ocean is ... read more

Ahh, the luxury of flying. You don't know how much you miss it and even though it was only lil ole Jet Star, in our eyes it was like going by private jet, such was our relief at not having to take another greyhound. So we arrived in Darwin and booked into the Meleleuca on Mitchell St (MOM) as this was recommended to us as the best hostel. It was ok there, nice bar and pool area and the room wasn't bad (except for the broken aircon and Babs, an OAP and seasoned traveller, who was bunking beneath Geen and who rose daily at 6am for her morning swim. Grrr) but unfortunately the worst thing about this hostel was the kitchen. Some stupid backpackers (and we have met a fair old few of em) had broken ... read more

Wednesday April 15th- There was no rest for the weary as we had just gotten in the previous night around midnight. I hadn’t gotten to bed until about 3am doing laundry, packing, etc for my noon flight. I woke up at 8:30am, showered, and finished gathering all of my trip stuff. I met Brian at 9:45am at Chancellor’s Place (the main bus stop at UQ) to catch our taxi at 10am. We arrived at the airport around 1030am and checked in for our flight. Talk about having no security, I was able to print out my boarding pass for not only the flight to Darwin, but also the flight back to Brisbane. Had I not checked a bag at no point would I have had to show any form of ID. It’s definitely a different way ... read more

Monday 30 March I had a super early start this morning to get to Auckland airport in time for my 7am flight to Sydney. Quantas staff at Sydney were taking industrial action, and since Quantas own half of Sydney airport and run pretty much everything there, when they strike, everything shuts down. While I was waiting for my shuttle bus to leave, the driver was saying that they had blockaded the roads in and out of the airport terminals so nobody was going in or out. I got chatting to a nice Canadian man who was also waiting for then bus, who is visiting on business, and that passed the time quite nicely. He had quite an interesting job - he is an aviation safety engineer, and what he specialises in is getting together with international ... read more

... read more

Day 237: Saturday 21st February - Day 1 in Kakadu National Park Another early start, this time I have to meet a few doors down the road at 6am for my Kakadu tour. Kakadu is Australia’s largest national park, covering 20,000 square kilometres east of Darwin (That is a tenth of the size of the UK). It shelters a wide variety of habitats and wildlife, the 2 billion year old rocks (amongst the oldest in the world) tell 30,000 year old stories about the oldest living culture in the world, the Aboriginal culture. For me the images that first brought the beauty of Kakadu, are those that were used in the filming of that classic 80’s movie, Crocodile Dundee. Our tour group is small, which is great. There are two girls from London, Amelia and Jo, ... read more
