DAY 255 Today is a much warmer start to the day and incidentally we are both starting to wake up earlier again, I think it must be psychological, knowing that we are moving on later in the week perhaps our minds are starting to get back into needing to wake at 7.00 so that we can get ourselves moving and packed up early and on the road in good time. The only question mark over us at the moment is when my camera lens is going to appear in Darwin. If it is going to arrive this week then it may be worth hanging on for a few days, but if it is going to be next week then we may need to move on, but that also means I will potentially miss out on some ... read more

DAY 254 Well, I don’t really know what to tell you about today, we had high hopes of an exciting afternoon, but that did not really work out, so we ended up doing nothing. After the usual breakfast and showers, we lounged around enjoying the sunshine, well ok, not the sunshine, but the heat of the morning in the shade, this morning started quite chilly, I actually put my fleece on when I first got dressed, how bad is that? Still I must not grumble it is still warmer up here than in other parts of Australia and I have heard that some people have rain in England. A lot of people have left the site in the last couple of days, it is still busy but not quite as bad as it had been ... read more

We arrived in Darwin on Sun 28/Jun/09 after a 3½-hour, Jetstar direct lunchtime flight from Melbourne. The airport is only about 10km from the CBD, so we were soon shuttle bussed ($12 each) to the Mediterranean on Cavenagh St. With a population of about 120,000, Darwin feels like one of the larger Victorian country towns. The city precinct would only be (~ 1.5 x 2.0 =) 3km2 with the CBD perhaps (~ 1 x 1 =) 1 km2, so very walkable. Indeed, Marg and I walked most of this central grid of streets &/or harbour side beaches, repeatedly, being ~ 5 blocks by 7 blocks. This was probably the best time of year to visit, with no noticeable humidity, and temperatures stuck at 31oC by day & 16oC overnight. As a result of the wartime air ... read more

DAY 253 If you read on, it is at your own choice, as we are still in Darwin things aren’t as exciting as they usually are, so things may seem to be a little dull, at the moment. We have always written the blog just as it happens, never putting in things to make it sound better, or to impress, it is a factual document of what is happening each day on our trip of a life time. We have noticed that our readership is definitely slipping as this morning 18th July we have had only 1433 hits this month, we work on roughly 100 hits a day as a good guide. The only positive thing is that we do intend to leave Darwin on Thursday 23rd July after our self imposed break and continue the ... read more

DAY 252 Again after a leisurely start to the day, we think about getting a move on to go into Darwin, before we go I said to Caroline that it would be nice to speak to Helen on our favourite farm in Nangus to see how Wally “The professional sheep dog” is getting on after his operation, and also to see how Helen, Robert and the farm are doing. We Skype out to Helen and she picks up, we are delighted and she tells us all the news about the farm, the spray unit is working well, Robert is fine and has gone off to the sheep sales very early this morning, it was about 6 degree’s there today and a fog lay over the ground. Helen said it was all very green, and it was ... read more

DAY 251 Despite listening to a dog howling at some ungodly hour this morning we both slept well, waking at the lovely late hour of 7.45. We must need our sleep! We can hear the Ibis wandering around outside and listen to the sound of their beaks tapping at our bins outside to see if they can find anything of interest. We are, or were should I say, going to have an easy day today, but it did not actually quite work out that way although really it was nothing exciting at all. After a nice easy start to the day, an early shower followed by breakfast, I sat around doing sudoku, Andy was busy typing up the blog. Our neighbours Joy and Laurie popped around, we made a cup of tea and sat chatting in ... read more

Good news for all of you losing sleep over our predicament in Croydon. Our new RV did arrive, later in the day than we expected but at least it was on the day we expected. Kudos to Apollo RV rental. Sally was a Ford and the new one was a Volkwagen but, that aside, they were identical. We had discussions on the name and never really came to a conclusion. There was a faction wanting to call it Little John and another lobbying for Herbie, after the VW Love Bug. Neither really stuck and we just kind of settled on “The Van” by default. So, we were able to leave Croydon and withdrew the kid’s employment applications at the Club Pub so they will not have to spend their teen years washing dishes there. From Croydon ... read more

DAY 248 Today seems to be all about washing up, the day started off that way and it seemed to set a theme for the day. Not having a significant plan to get up for in the mornings does have a habit of making you feel lazy, but it is great! So another easy start to the day I knock up a bacon sandwich for breakfast as a treat. But before that I have to wash the dishes from last night, because I need the plates and last night I could not be bothered to wash up, so before the bacon sandwich can materialise I wash up! While we eat our breakfast a White Ibis wanders up and seeing the bowl of washing up water (I left it so that I could wash the breakfast things), ... read more
