DAY 239 I have been struggling to get out of bed for the past few mornings, I feel tired so just happy to be given a cup of tea and ease myself into the day, nonetheless I got up by 8.00 and as soon as I was up the new toaster was plugged in and before long Andy and I were tucking into a slice of toast, his with peanut butter and mine with a nice helping of Bovril (well, I cannot find any Marmite - the British version of Marmite that is!). Miriam and Dave appeared, yesterday we agreed to help them out, they need to get the remainder of their belongings from their crashed Toyota Landcruiser, we also wanted to see if we had any chance of towing the Landcruiser away from its ... read more

DAY 238 Again I was up early yesterday, getting back in to my early morning routine; all these time changes have played hell on my internal clock. We are just using this week in Darwin to relax and do nothing really as its been go, go, go for nearly 8 months. in fact Tuesday next will be our 8 month anniversary. We haven’t seen any thing of Darwin yet, but I am not worried about that, we have done some pretty crucial maintenance things and there will be loads of time to see what Darwin has to offer. Caroline managed to drag herself out of bed, and sit in the sunshine whilst I finished the blog off for “Not many days like these” I can tell Caroline has wound right off as she went to look ... read more

DAY 232 It was 6.30am and my alarm had just gone off, there was barely any light outside as the morning had not quite woken up itself, amazingly there was also a thick covering of fog outside, it was lovely and cool, but no time for lazing around in bed this morning, I have a Skype session with my girlfriends, back in England, booked for 7.00am. Once dressed, I cleaned my teeth to make myself look half presentable, tricky at this time of the morning, put the kettle on, booted up the laptop and while that was booting up (takes ages at the moment), made a cup of tea for Andy and me. Andy took the opportunity to stay in bed a little longer. I jumped into the truck, where I knew that I could Skype ... read more

Day 50 (Tuesday 09/06/09, NJJ) Free day for washing and ad hoc stuff. First time Jay and I had an hour apart since we've been away. Both enjoyed the time on our own. In evening had buffet again at Casino, made me ill again although I didn't eat that much. Such a boring that we only took 2 photos and they weren't worth the time to upload.... read more

So we've spent the last week in Darwin, reading books and reading the job section of the papers, but to no avail. The first night we arrived, we met with Nicola and Stef's fellow apple pickers, Aifa and Becky. We shared a few $8 jugs of Carlton Draught (that was to be a constant throughout the week) and then went to Mindil Beach Sunset Market. It was affy bonny, and the locals turn out by the hundreds and drink there drink and watch the setting sun. Then everyone goes to the market to try one of the "120 food stalls from 50 countries", as the lonely bible says. We had some Chinese thing which was very pleasant. Most days we spent in the cool air conditioned hostel, only going out to use the free internet at ... read more

Day 46 (Friday 05/06/09, NJJ) Not the best night sleep as the hostel is not great. It's clean but the mattress had a plastic cover (very noisy when you move), the bed springs creaked and every time someone leaves their room the door slams shut as they are fire doors. We wandered around the city for a few hours. Booked our trips for the next few days and then took advantage of the free Darwin open-top bus tour that the sales agent gave us. On the tour it was evident why he gave it to us free - it was sh*t! There wasn't much to see in Darwin, it's popular because of the great weather and as a base for the nearby (in Oz terms) trips to the National Parks etc. We did visit a gaol, ... read more

Firstly I would like to apologise for last weeks rather univentive title, both Ross and Stef used 'Roadtrip' too........ Secondly, from my ever attentive, inquisitive mind (along the same lines of 'some aussie observations'), I have some queries I hope my readers can help me with. Answers on a postcard please: 1) Thongs(flip flops) and socks, together, why??? 2) How come sailors uniforms are white? It looks a bit funny I reckon. 3) Who would win in a battle between a shark and a croc? 4) Why do Australians think that turning airports/buses into freezers is a good idea, after being in the heat all day? It's playing havoc with my internal thermostat. Thats all I can think of for now, but there will be more, so for now on with the blog. Aaaaah Darwin. Now ... read more

We managed to get a campervan relocation from Cairns to Darwin. We don't have to pay for it cos the company need the van in Darwin. All we had to pay was the petrol and then they also give us $210 petrol money back. 6 days to travel 3000km. We had to head back down to Townsville cos that is the only route we were allowed to take cos the other roads are too bad. We didn't quite make it down to Townsville the first day cos it got too dark and we're not insured to drive at night, too many roos etc crossing the roads and they can seriously damage the car if you hit them! We stopped off at IGA supermarket to get our usual pasta, next stop the bottle shop for our beer ... read more

We made it to DARWIN!! 14 days in a bus... actually thats a bit of a lie. we made it to darwin 3 days ago in the evening but after a rather crazy night out left at 5 the next morning to go to kakadu national park for 3 days. So, after Alice Springs where we left about 6 in the morning, we drove up to the Devils Marbles, a weird rock formation where it appears to the eye that there are strange balls of stone, varying from 1 to maybe 5m in height, are sitting on the ground and on other rocks. its a very strange sight and quite hard to explain.. but after a scramble around on the rocks where aboriginals wont even go near incase the spirits kidnap them.. a quick stop for ... read more
