Kakadu, no can do! Wednesday 28th January 2009 Darwin is a bit of a dump; a nothing place. It is drab, boring and full of Aussie backpackers on walkabout, or rather sit about and drink about. There are very few other nationalities here, unlike most places on the usual global travel routes so it is entirely lacking in any charm whatsoever. We have been here just twenty four hours and hate it. The shops shut at 5 p.m., the restaurants offer little variety, the hostel kitchen is as dirty as the people using it and we are checking out tomorrow. Darwin Harbour is attractive but this little city really doesn’t have anything else to commend it. We did find a nice Thai restaurant for a good meal, but apart from this one restaurant, run by lovely ... read more

We arrived in Kununurra off the back of a fabulous week discovering the Kimberley and all its delights. We had a whole heap of fun in between Karijini and Kununurra via Broome but we were now in that all too familiar situation of needing to work, mainly for survival, but also to make sure we can keep the dream going. We were also chasing our second year visa (so attached we were to Australia yet so little of it we had seen), which for those not in the know, meant doing 88 days of 'seasonal' work. So far we had done 0. We had a whole heap of misery ahead of us. It wasn't hard to find work in Kununurra, thanks to the huge irrigation system they had put in the area that supplied a huge ... read more

In the morning we got a taxi to Parap market (nobody walks the 3km in this weather). Where we had breakfast (Pancakes for Charlie and Sauteed Squid for myself) and wondered around the weekly market, an array of multicultural food stands, aboriginal goods and the ubiquitous tat stalls! We then had lunch at the Star City casino where we walked to Mindil beach. A pretty cove where unfortunately we couldn't swim due to Crocodiles, Sharks and Jelly fish! On our walk back to our apartment we got caught in one of Darwin's famous rain storms! Our evening couldn't of been more perfect with the storms breaking before we boarded the Anniki (the Pearl Lugger that featured in the film Australia) for a Sunset Harbour Cruise. The sea was dead calm with only a very slight warm ... read more

Another fairly early start today (7:20) for a trip to Litchfield Park. The trip started with the feeding of Barricuda and spotting Short and Long Neck turtles at Howard Springs. We then went to see Cathedral termite mounds. These grow on average about 1 meter a decade so we were surprised to see one around five meters tall! Next to these were Magnetic termite mounds, these look like tombstones and are always orientated North / South to allow the flat faces to pick up the heat from the rising and setting sun! The coolest part of the trip was yet to come as we swam in two Waterfall pools (the Florence and Wangi Falls). What we didn't realise until after was that these are still inhabited by Fresh Water Crocodiles (though evidently they're more scared of ... read more

We can not over state the humidity in Darwin! Saying that Charlie still undertook a half hour run. Cold showers are the order of the day! The morning was spent organising our accommodation for the next three nights in Darwin, Bali & Hong Kong. along with booking two Darwin day trips. In the afternoon we went to "Crocosaurus Cove" basically a Crocodile inner city park. The highlight of which was watching them being fed and holding an 18 month baby (1.5 meters long)! We then did what is now becoming a habit and had an ice-cream. For our dinner we walked to Cullen Bay and ate in one of the many restaurants over looking the harbour. We've been lucky and as yet haven't been caught in a thunderstorm, though we did witness a pretty impressive one ... read more

Today we left Sydney for Darwin. The best laid plans of mice and men. Once again we had issues with our airport shuttle, this time they completely forgot us! Luckily I could contact them on my mobile and could arrange another pick up. Again nothing is straight forward as he only had one seat. We finally arrived after twenty minutes with Charlie in the cab and myself sitting on the engine between Charlie and the driver. Though I shouldn't complain as I was the only one with a heated seat! For the second time we managed to fly domestically without having to show any photo ID! Don't be surprised to hear of an Australian 9/11! The first thing you notice about Darwin is the humidity! Wow, Hot & Very Sticky! We were also really surprised to ... read more

We arrived to Darwin and were nearly knocked out by the heat and humidity as we stepped off the plane. About 35C degrees and 98% humidity. The flight from Perth was amazing. The scenery of Western Australia was crystal clear from 37,000 feet. We flew right over the Kimberley. Just made you think about the history of the land. So rugged so empty yet so beautiful. I have never seen a place like it. On arrival to Darwin we headed to Cullen Bay to stay with Nathan and Emma. Our first order of business was to have as many dips in their pool as possible daily. I explored the local Art and History museum after a very arduous 1 hour walk through the mid day heat and humidity, albeit along the beach. As I walked along ... read more
