Finally after taking 3 hours to give us our campervan (we had to do paperwork, watch a 'how to' video and then get everything explained again in person and then inspect the vehicle for damage) we finally drove off and were lost in 5 mins! Driving around backtstreets and trying to find the main road again, whilst trying to get use to driving on the right hand side, and trying not to turn windscreen wipers on instead of indicators- there were a few profanities being thrown around in the those first few minutes. But finally once we were on the main road, and then on the autobahn for the first time, we were right! Our new best friend, TomTom guided us all the way and it was brilliant. In around 2 hours we would be ... read more

Professor Griffen came to design today. It was actually kind of nice, we all talked to him about out project, which was surprisingly helpful, then we all just sat and chatted. He told us all sorts of things that are going on back at school, new plans, new people, all sorts of new things. It was nice. This afternoon we had class at the Roman Forum. Only about my 5th time there, and about my 3rd time learning it all. It’s so funny how that first few weeks we all thought everything was so amazing, the colloseum, the ruins…now it’s like Get out of my way, I have class here… It’s still incredible, but just not as exciting to see anymore. ... read more

10c, fine No expectations and no plans - Finland was an open book from the beginning. I knew little about Helsinki and my first encounter of a Finnish person was the Finnair hostesses saying ‘hey’ as I boarded the plane. Wow.. That’s really casual for an airline welcome, I was expecting a “welcome aboard.. blah blah blah”. Even the pilot came on the intercom and was like “hey…”. I thought Finnish people were just extremely laid back until I learnt that “hei” (pronounced: “hey”) means hello in Finnish. Wow.. Finland was cool and home to the ‘original’ hey - it was slightly weird having people say “hey” to you in a way that assumed you knew them. Anyhow.. enough hey! I was happy to be reunited with my bag at Helsinki airport. It spend a ... read more

Back from a whirlwind tour of the Netherlands. Left on the 4th with Richard, Morgan, and Kristine and flew to Dusseldorf, Germany for the night. In the morning we left Kristine who was on her way to Paris and got the first train to Amsterdam. We were met by our friend Venk at the train station who took Morgan with him to the house he shares with his girlfriend Priya and our other friend Jon in Den Haag. Morgan stayed with them for the four nights we were in Amsterdam. Richard and I once again brought our tent and sleeping bags. This time we added a couple of sleeping mats which I made from a found piece of foam and the sleep was much more comfortable. Amazing what 1/2 inch of foam can do for ... read more

We got to Paris by the Eurostar train and actually had a brilliant connection from Canterbury to Ashford International and from there directly to Paris. The journey was really fast - only about 3 hrs. Crossing the channel felt alright, I expected it to be a terrible experience! We could hardly tell we were under the water... it was a typical tunnel... When we got to Paris Nord station we bought ourselves three day tickets, which were only about 17 Euros. This was a very good choice, this ticket allowed us to travel on 1-3 zones (any transport - bus, underground etc.). Most of the time we were using the underground as it was the fastest way of getting around the city. As usual, our hotel was in the beautiful suburbs of Paris near Villepinte Exhibitions. ... read more

Thankfully, over 2000 photographs were taken by the Travelling Canucks to enjoy. We have selected some of our favorites to share with our friends and over 1000 visitors to our travel blog to date! Europe » Norway » Eastern Norway » Oslo April 10th 2007

Norway was fantastic. Cold. Expensive. Beautiful. The people were among the nicest (and prettiest) that I've ever met. Day 1 Duffel bag is packed. We walk to central station which gives us a good idea of how (not) fun it will be to walk around carrying all your things with you and then take the train to Schiphol airport. We get to our gate where a whopping 2 people are. Apparently Norway is not a happening destination. Eventually the gate fills in and we get on our plane and 2 hours later we arrive at the airport in Norway. It's pitch black and freezing and almost midnight. We fumble around for about an hour trying to figure out how to get from the airport to the hostel and eventually figure out that we need to get ... read more

Well its been about 2 weeks an have either been working or spending my days off in the sun (it was too good to go to a computer). Last week it got up to 17 degrees!! Now if i was in Aussie I would be bundled up but here, its time for singlets and rolled up jeans. It seems everyone gets excited, cafe tables go out on walkways, icecream vans pop up an the usually deserted gardens are packed with little kiddies and those bathing in the sun having a picnic. Had both Thursday and Friday where i just kicked back with a few mates, had a look around the shops it was great. Your probably thinking graveyards!! Ok so I actually went into one!! Where i live in pretty much right behind one of ... read more

Europe » United Kingdom » Wales April 10th 2007

The Easter break saw us headed to Wales for some of what the UK has to offer. Llanfairpwllgwyngyllgogerychwyrndrobwllllantysiliogogogoch was not on our itinerary but the Brecon Beacons, Pembrokeshire, and Snowdonia were. They said it couldn't be done, they meaning my boss Dr Rowland, who said 'we do have patients on tuesday you know'. Wales in four days, no worries. For Aussies the distances are not huge to drive however in Wales the roads are narrow little village ways with some larger roads - not enough! There were lots of Clan dan nooee and Daffyd jokes, for those fans of Little Britain you will know what we are on about. What a start to Easter, beautiful blue skies and warm sunny weather. Its unheard of. We picked up the car and headed out on the M4 ... read more

Europe » Italy » Apulia » Brindisi April 10th 2007

Yesterday Beth and I attended our first family BBQ - Italian Style. The occasion was “La Pasquetta” or “Little Easter.” This is the day after Easter Sunday and is a national holiday. School is still on spring break and everyone gets together for a celebration of the 2nd official religion in Italy - Eating! Easter week is a week-long combination of tradition and religion. Last Tuesday we attended a reenactment of the Passion. Unfortunately, it was so crowded that we were unable to see much. But we did end up at Vincenzo’s cousin’s (Mino) house for dolce and caffe; I had a small glass of cognac and dolce. We ended up accepting an invitation to their BBQ on Pasquetta. The BBQ was held at a small plot of land outside of Brindisi. The land belongs ... read more
